Hi guys!

A friend of mine sent me this link to a wonderful YT video of LMB feasting on live bait in slow motion ....3 minutes of bass bliss! Does anyone get the idea that these bass are more like pets? Enjoy!!!

Fished Maspenock today from about 11pm to 5pm. The ice was pretty thick, 8+". It was nice black ice too, no white ice. Snow on top was crunchy enough that I didn't need the spikes for my boots. Fishing was slooooooooooow though. Tried fishing a deeper part of the lake along some drop offs but not much luck. Got a pickerel and a pretty sizable perch on tipups but that was it. A couple more trips from either tiny pickerel or more perch but overall not much action.

#6! Awesome!

I’m packing up the kayak and heading south for some open water when I get home from work in the morning!

Did you find any open water?  I'm going to try to find some myself tomorrow.

Firstly, wecome to the forum stasiofishing.  You’ve found the best place to learn and contribute bass fishing.

Secondly, I found some open water, namely Hedges Pond in Plymouth.  I got the kayak and my rods wet for the second time this year, and for the second time this year I got skunked.  Well, fish skunked.  I snagged something and pulled up a nice granite stone with a long rope attached to it.  Too bad I can’t call a rock a personal best ... it was north of 5 pounds for sure!

Getting shut out wasn’t a total surprise, with only the NE 1/3 of the pond open and water temps at 39.x, I didn’t expect much.

I kept it simple with a gold blade bait, tiny brown/chartreuse maribou jig, and a smallie colored 4” Senko.  I covered as much of the open water as possible, which was mostly 17’ - 20’ of flat, barren bottom.

I marked what I assume were perch in the 14’ - 16’ areas but couldn’t get them to bite on anything.  I didn’t mark much on the bottom.

Late in the day I switched to a black/blue Ned and a perch Rapala DT10.  Stll NADA.

When I launched at noon-ish 1/3 of the pond was open.  When I left at dusk, more than 1/2 was open.  If it stays near/above freezing for the next couple days, it should be 100% fishable.

Gonna change up a couple things (tube, hair jig) and try to get back there again later this week.

Thanks I will probably check it out.  Where there any areas fishable from shore?  I am nervous about fishing out of my kayak without a drysuit.

Tomorrow’s forecast calls for single digit wind chill..... today would have been the day to get out.  Hope some of you did!

I have to get out next week... I picked up a Kistler 7’3” KLX MH-MF and want to try it out!

Hedges is a small, 20 acre pond, between exits 2 & 3 on route 3.  It has two beaches.  The NE beach drops off to 10’ within casting distance.  The SW beach is on a flat, you won’t get to deep water from shore.

If you have waders, you can wade the whole place.  Most of the pond drops off quickly (think cereal bowl).  The east corner drops off quickly.  With waders, you can hit 15’ quickly.

Good luck if you get down there.  Smallmouth bass and yellow perch are the only species I’ve ever caught there.

Don’t worry about not having a dry suit.  Keep a change of clothes in your truck, stick to small ponds you can get back to shore in a couple minutes, and lastly .... don’t fall in.  I can’t speak for your kayak, but it’s near impossible to tip or fall off my FeelFree Lure.

OK, it’s starting to get bad ... yesterday I respooled a couple reels and this morning I’m watching On the Water’s Angling Advendures on TV ....they’re kayak fishing for smallies in the Berkshires....

I know it’s only a few weeks unil ice out... I’m already jonezing for my first bass of the year....

I think I’ll take a ride to Plymouth and look for open water...

Temps are looking good this week. Dogbone where we fishing this weekend?

Dunno yet. Working for a friend T-F this week. Won’t be able to scout for open water.

Best bet’ll be Hedges or GS (if not too windy)

That time of the year where I either drive east to find open water of west to find hard water. Big decisions lol.

Drove by Sunset Lake in Braintree this afternoon.  The shallow area to the south is mostly open. A few other parts are open, but not enough to fish from. The remaining ice looks gray and thin.

SOON!

Spring Training Report '19

With pitchers and catchers reporting for the Bo-Sox this week, I'm happy to report a soft-water bassin' update from just 60 miles east of Fort Myers, FL. While my outing this past Sunday on Lake Okeechobee might not help anyone catch more fish through/around the ice in E.Mass, hopefully it'll help alleviate the seasonal depression some might have, and get people amped up for the upcoming season.

For some background, the Big O is still suffering from low-water levels (4ft lower than last year) and a grass deficit, due to the semi-recent hurricanes. With that in mind, much of the best fishing (according to locals) is being had in the slightly deeper and relatively clearer north-west region that holds a number of reed/pad fields. This was also a major area that came into focus during a recent FLW Costa tourney, though quite a few fish came out of the rim-ditches which surround the outside of much of the lake.

We started our adventure with a bumpy 18-mile run from the Clewiston area (south-west corner), with winds kicking up around 12-14mph from the east. Coming off plane to the sun rising through the mist, we eased into a shallow maze of reed stems and began firing at will. Over the next 10hrs, this is what we learned...

--> Clarity is relative, at most it was 24" before your bait vanished into the tan water...nothing like the Cape smallie waters I'm familiar with.

--> With fish in pre-spawn and actively spawning phases, time of day, sunlight and the associated feeding windows were far more important than presentation. We found that the 1pm-3pm bite, when the sun was present, was far superior to any other time of day. It was also the time when we caught our biggest fish.

--> Bait silhouette, rather than color, seemed more important as we caught fish on anything from red to chartreuse to black while blind-casting to likely bedding areas.

--> The "spot on a spot" is definitely a thing. Almost every bite came within 2ft of cover (mostly reed stems), even on top-water.

--> Can't stress how important targeting the isolated items of cover was. The smallest, most boring looking pieces of cover farthest away from anything else "fishy-looking" were the best.

--> Long casts were critical, even in the dirty water, though it made fighting big fish a tad more interesting as they were happy to launch themselves into the heavy stuff and dare you to follow.

At the end of the day, we ended up with somewhere around 25 keepers, and were blessed to hook into and land two fish over 6lbs. Both came on soft-plastic stick-baits, t-rigged with 1/4oz pegged weights.

It was a great way to knock off the rust, and now its time to hurry up and wait until the thaw...hope to see you all out there soon.

Drove by part part of the Assabet river today. It was high and flowing pretty good in the narrow spots. There was a section I've been wanting to try in the kayak that was completely open, so I think I'm going to attempt to get an open water February bass tomorrow!

Battled the elements yesterday! Fished 2 spots! Got a few good whacks and a fat white perch at spot 1!

Spot 2 got this chunky fish on a swimbait! Had a few good hits as well! This fish hit a Tiny Klash slllooowwee twitch and pause in 4 feet of water!

I’ll be back out tomorrow!!!

@Mr. Aquarium Nice fish!

I launched my kayak for the first time this year on the Assabet. I was out for about four hours, spent about half of that paddling to a spot and back against the wind/current. Tried swimbaits and jerkbaits but no bites. I paddle a bit far for my first time back out and definitely regretted it a bit on the paddle back to the launch.

I guess I paddled farther than I thought :surprised:, just measured it out on Google Earth...5 miles round trip. I had my outriggers on too which definitely add considerable drag. All that for a skunk lol. Still nice to be out though. That section of the river is on the edge of the Assabet National Wildlife refuge and is very picturesque. Especially with snow and ice on the banks it and the sun out.

My wife and I drove to Plymouth, looking at a couple houses.  Unfortunately the one on Bloody Pond was out of our price range (2.5 acres on the pond w/3 car garage, but $10K+/year in taxes), but every pond we drove by was WIDE OPEN!

I got her Jeep dirty down some dirt roads too, but I'll clean it up later tonight.

Gonna spend some time refitting the rudder control on my Lure and get ready for some smallmouth hunting late in the week.
