Super User MassYak85 Posted August 30, 2018 Super User Posted August 30, 2018 @Janderson45 Sweet boat! Is that fresh from the factory?   I am thinking of trying some new places this weekend. What have been your guy's experiences at Singletary and/or Manchaug? Quote

He thought it would probably be his last boat so he didn't want to settle for a different motor. Sure beats fishing out of my kayak when I get the chance to go with him ? Quote

bitsandbass Posted August 30, 2018 Posted August 30, 2018 Cochichuate State Park has a huge body of water but Ive never really seen anyone with decent bass. Anyone fished this lake? Is it worth it? Any tips for bass? Thanks folks.  Also, what about Morses Pond or Lake Waban (Wellesley College). I’ve never done well at Cochichuate in either quantity or quality.  I am sure it holds a few decent bass but for whatever reason it is difficult for me.  Morses Pond is close to me and I’ve driven/walked by it many times.  I don’t think boats are allowed.  There’s limited shore access so I’ve actually never fished it. I got a bronze pin pickerel out of Cochituate earlier this summer but IMO the bass fishing leaves a lot to be desired. Rarely do I do well numbers wise, and I think my best fish out of there was just over 3. Quote

Dunks N Dinks Posted August 31, 2018 Posted August 31, 2018 Lake Boon in Stowe is pretty solid for numbers Quote

For shore fishing, try wachusett reservoir, spot pond or sudbury reservoir.  If you have a canoe/kayak/boat then there are more options. 1 Quote
Janderson45 Posted September 2, 2018 Posted September 2, 2018 Tough fishing yesterday with the passing of a pretty good cold front the day before, bluebird skies, high pressure and air temps in the low to mid 70s. Â Managed to squeak out a small limit of largemouth on lake Nippenicket while breaking in the new boat and motor. Â Not a great pic or great fish but a few of the first to hit the deck on the new boat! Â Â Everything i caught came on a jig in shallow heavy cover. Â My buddy caught a couple on a frog as well. 5 Quote

I take my grandson there (he's 12) and while he's not picky about what he catches (yet ?) there is plenty of accessible shoreline with good bass opportunities, even for the youngest of budding anglers. Not knowing where in the state you hale from @bitsandbass makes it a bit tough to recommend a place, but if you're out my way in N. Central you might also check out Tully Lake in Athol/Royalston. It's a state park so has plenty of amenities that a six year old might need, and there is a trail system all around the lake for generally easy shore access. There is also a good chance of sighting a bald eagle or two. If you do have a boat etc., there is a really great ramp there too. Quote
Mr. Aquarium Posted September 3, 2018 Posted September 3, 2018 i'll 3rd wachusett. great place, fish the basins and causeways, youll get some decent fish and a variety as well, great place. it can be tough tho but the basin, bridges and causeways are the best for shore access, fishing especially for the kids got out pike fishing on saturday. only managed one but had many follows and hits. i had the lure hanging off the side of the boat and this fish SMOKED IT. was fiddling with something else not paying attention. had 3 good hit on the same lure doing the same thing. my buddy caught a nice pike about the same size early in the day, i caught this one later in the day. we both had good hits. he broke off a decent fish. 6 Quote

Love pike fishing, but I only do it once per year from lake champlain. I'd like the chance to do more in MA Quote
Mr. Aquarium Posted September 5, 2018 Posted September 5, 2018 nope no pike in wachusetts, ive heard rumors. this was caught else where in MA Quote
bitsandbass Posted September 5, 2018 Posted September 5, 2018 Thanks for the help guys. Wachusetts is big hike for me given time commitments, but doable on a random weekend.  I've fished Sudbury and although the scenery is great, the spot we were at wasnt ideal (pretty shallow, also tons of tree cover and kids kept getting snagged in branches). I dont recall exactly where we were (there was a football field at the entrance). I could give Sudbury another shot if someone knows of a better spot for young kids. Thanks! Super User DogBone_384 Posted September 5, 2018 Super User Posted September 5, 2018 Did a recon trip to Mary's Pond in Rochester. Hit the water about 9:30 and witnessed a guy weighing a 4 1/2 pound LMB on shore. OK, I thought, this place has potential.  I worked the perimeter, tossing a Whopper Plopper, wacky rigged Yum Dinger, and a green jig with Menace trailer. I ended up with a pile of small bass, mostly on the Dinger, weighed in ounces, not pounds. One little guy hit the WP, thinking he could swallow a bait half his size. All but one fish was caught in 10-12' of water, near drops.  An Osprey make an unsuccessful dive near me, which was VERY cool to see.  Water temps were 82.x Quote

Try hiking the eastern shore of the reservoir, there are some steeper banks I've done okay at. Quote
Super User DogBone_384 Posted September 6, 2018 Super User Posted September 6, 2018 Fishing Rhino and I launched at Mashpee Wakeby at dawn. We left a little after 9:00 with little to show and tried Wequaquet down the road. We left there about 1:30 pm with not much more to show than MW. Tom and I caught a few little bass on wacky rigged worms. I nabbed two picks on a jig.  Wequaquet was VERY windy. Water temps were high 70s to low 80s between the two.  Today's performance was right in line with the success I had yesterday in Rochester. Needless to say the state record's still intact..... I'm new as well and live in the North Shore. Sent you a PM to see if you have any new leads on spots around us.   Been discouraged as of late. Bought all this new gear in the last few weeks, and it's been really tough lately. Mainly because I just don't know where to fish and I am still learning. I don't mind driving out and possibly getting the kayaks out but mainly fish the banks for now.  Is there a consensus on an area or particular pond in MA that will boost my ego a bit and make me feel better about the money I've spent? Haha. Quote
JG233 Posted September 7, 2018 Posted September 7, 2018 All the fishing I do is south of Boston. I recommend looking through the NH thread. It seems like there's some decent water in southern NH. You also might want to consider renting a boat out on the Quabbin. The fall fishing there is about to get really good once it cools off. 1 Quote

Super User MassYak85 Posted September 9, 2018 Super User Posted September 9, 2018 Today was dink city at Manchaug and then Quinsig in the afternoon, mostly fishing a spinnerbait in the wind. A couple came on a power worm, nothing over 2lbs. I lost one on the worm I think may have been closer to 3 due to a combination of me having the drag too tight, using too small a hook for the worm, and letting the fish dig into the weeds....all of which let the hook bend out enough for the fish to get off.  Today was also the first day in a while I can remember the water being considerably warmer than the air. Quote
