Super User DogBone_384 Posted March 29, 2017 Super User Posted March 29, 2017 Mother Nature cooperated today. I launched at Hedges around 9:00, starting along the northern shoreline.   I switched between the haloween Shadow Rap deep that worked here before and a white ice Zoom Super Fluke on a drop shot.  A nice 1-11 smallie chomped on the fluke in about 8' of water along the west shore.  Like the other smallies I've caught here this year it was good sized and skinny.  After an hour or so of practice casting I moved across to the two humps my Lowrance located for me.  I threw perch and wallye colored Shad-Raps, the fluke, and an orange/brown Ned all over the place with no takers other than a 3 pound stick, a new PB.  Just like the last two times here I had major birds' nests with my Patriarch XT.  So much so that I was down to about 1/4 a spool.  I'm using 8 pound Yozuri Hybrid for the first time and am guessing I got a spool made late on Friday afternoon.  Respooled when I got home.  We'll see what happens next time out.  Water temps started out in the high 41.x and finished low 42.x. 1 Quote

I was thinking of starting at one of the gates from 29-35 and hiking the paths a bit to try and avoid the crowd. Is this side productive? That's a good area but it's a good walk to the water.  Gate 35 (the rook) is 35 minutes each way.  Make sure you have a good map.  Don't want to get lost.  I will be out there the following Saturday.  If anyone wants to meet up let me know.  I'll probably fish live bait until 830-9.  Then use spoons and walk the shoreline until noon.   Gate is tbd. 1 Quote
Super User Fishing Rhino Posted March 29, 2017 Super User Posted March 29, 2017 Dogbone and I are headed to Sawdy this morning. Â Not expecting much, but hoping to be surprised. Â We'll see. Â Â Going to use my baitcasters more this season. Â If I use them once, it will be more than they got used last year. Â I've got three real stout combos. Â The sturdiest will handle baits up to six ounces, and line up to forty pounds. Â I'm going to use that where I may have to horse a fish out of the weeds. Â I have five others that can be considered normal. Quote
Mr. Aquarium Posted March 29, 2017 Posted March 29, 2017 yea that area is very long walks, you can get lost very easily. lots of roads out there. to be honest not the best place to hike in alone if you never been. Â ill be out saturday! going to be very crappy weather! WOOOOO i will be out there all day sun up to sun down, sleeping in my car the night before in a walmart parking lot for like 4 hours! Â sucks gettin out of work at 11pm friday and living 1.5 hrs away 1 Quote

I'll find a map and carry it with me and hope for the best haha. I hate crows so I'll take the risk. I'm most likely unavailable Saturday so I'll be there Sunday from sunrise to sun down. Good luck man! Super User DogBone_384 Posted March 30, 2017 Super User Posted March 30, 2017 Fishing Rhino and I launched at Saudy between 8:30 & 9:00, betting on the weather forecast's accuracy.  It was cold to start, and didn't get warmer.  Toss in a pretty stiff wind from the N/NE around 10:00, it was a pretty tough morning, even layered up.  I managed a 1-7 pickerel on a green pumpkin Ned and a 1-11 Larry on a Yamamoto Heart Tail.  Water temps were 41.x.  Warmer weather is just around the corner, as is Quabbin's opening day..... Quote

I finally caught my first fish of 2017 (fortunately size doesn't matter in fishing!) on the Charles River (across from the Boston Skating Club) on my lunch break today!   These are also my first fish on a jerk bait.  Not bad for 45 minutes of fishing! 1 Quote

And @Cyacnba, you seem to be killing it in these cold temps! I won't be able to get out until the weekend of the 22nd unfortunately (other than maybe a short shore attempt).  I found out this week that I'll be in Virginia all summer (May - August) for an internship so sadly I won't be able to see the season unfold like it usually does. Although it does present a nice opportunity to catch me so me nice Virginia Bass! I'll have to hop over to the Virginia thread and ask them for some pointers.  Im sure @Darren. can give you the lowdown on catching some VA chunks. So lots of rain and just enough snow to up the miserable factor. Its like mother nature is just taunting me now.Not even a coating of snow on the ground after all that.I can hear her laughing at me. Yea I'll probably hit up Darren and ask his advice. And the weather is crazy. I remember last year first fish of the year I got a 4 1/2 lber out of A1 in my kayak April 10th. It was warm enough for just a light sweatshirt. Quote

RyanDR Posted April 2, 2017 Posted April 2, 2017 Hit the Chu today. Get there at sunrise, fished until about 1. No bites. Didn't run into anybody that caught anything today either. Will try again for a laker in the next week. Quote
Mr. Aquarium Posted April 3, 2017 Posted April 3, 2017 fished all day saturday at the chu, missed one small fish either a trout or salmon.  heard of fish being caught tho, mostly on bait! long cold wet day for a skunking but it was worth it.  f fished sunday fish 2 ponds, got a late start cuz i was tired from the chu. first pond found fish stacked up. caught about 8 bass missed just as many. they were chewing a blade bait.  mix of smallies and largemouth. biggest was a 2.5lbser, they fish fought hard tho. all fat healthy colorful fish. i thought they were bigger when i was reeling them in. missed a few fish that felt like they had some weight. pond 2 long drag in on the yak.  only caught 1 bass but missed a few good fish! had 2 big hits on the jig but missed em! 2 Quote
Super User DogBone_384 Posted April 4, 2017 Super User Posted April 4, 2017 Got out of work this morning, packed up, did my chores & errands, and launched at Hedges around 10:45 - 11:00.   Straight away I saw at least a dozen beds along the northern bank.  There were many more along the south bank.  I started along in about 8' of water where I could reach the shallows and still cast to 10' depths too.  I started with a watermelon/black/red Hula Grub on a drop shot, green pumpkin Ned, and a GP Pro 2 Vision 110.  After two hours without so much as a whiff I switched the Hula Grub to a white ice Super Fluke Jr, the green pumpkin Ned to green pumpkin/orange, and the Vision 110 to a gold Rapala suspending jerk bait (X-Rap?).  I struck out with soft baits but the gold Rapala saved the shut out with two smallies (1-8, 1-9) and a chubby 12 ounce yellow perch.  The first smallie came from the western corner and the other two near the hump/steep drop off on the south bank.  All three were in shallow water, about 3-4' I figure.  Both smallies didn't hit really hard but had some decent fight to them.  I thought I'd snagged something with #2 until it swam to the side.   Water temps ranged from 44.x to 45.x when I left at 2:30.  Barometeric pressure was 30.2.  I'm off until Friday AM, so if Mother Nature cooperates and I don't dig up any extra work, I'm gonna give Ponkie or Sunset a try so to see if any LMB are active. 1 Quote
Mr. Aquarium Posted April 4, 2017 Posted April 4, 2017 nice day dogbone. i went out yesterday. couple of dink fish on jerkbaits. saw alot of surface activity tho. THINGS ARE GETTING BETTER!!! WOOOOOOO Quote
JAB50 Posted April 4, 2017 Posted April 4, 2017 Swamp Hawgs, How are the water levels in that area/cape cod area too? If anyone else has knowledge. I'll be coming back up from Maryland in May(6th-13th). The drought was brutal last summer and fall. When I came home in October it was probably the lowest I have ever seen it. Quote
