Careful out there, it's even shallower than last time you were out, down about 9' in most areas I believe.  Fish can definitely still be had though!  Wish I didn't have work tomorrow, otherwise I'd consider going myself.  Might hit it again end of the week if I get a day off.  Good luck!

We got off Quabbin's dock around 6:30. It was cloudy but calm. Fishing Rhino bagged a 2+ pound smallie on the second cast, not 50' passed the launch. Tom landed another one just beyond the shallow markers so we stayed close.  Things slowed down as the skies cleared so we moved along. Tom continued to pull in smallies of various size, but it was much slower than anticipated.

I ploughed through my tackle bag, throwing baits similar to Tom with no more than a couple hits until I tossed a green/red flake tube in 15+' and pulled a 2-8 smallie.

We started back just after 2:00, fished around the launch again for a short time, without success.

The day's tally was Fishing Rhino 13, Dogbone 1. Tom had big fish of the day with 3-0 & 2-14.

I'd like to fish the Quabbin once more this season to get revenge on the bass who had lock-jaw against my baits. We'll see.

Quabbin sounds like a blast from all the reports you guys post from there. I'll probably fish somewhere local Saturday, I'm excited to try out two rats I got (Savage Gear and Moreau).

No, we hit that spot around 11:30-ish for a little while but it was S L O W.  It was a funny day.  Tom nailed six or seven within the first hour or two, but when the clouds cleared away the bite slowed to almost nothing.  Most fish were caught close to the dock.  We went far left from where we did well, another 1/2 3/4 mile and did OK.  That's where I caught my lonely fish.

Do you remember water temps Dogbone?  I'm headed back out there tomorrow, curious how much (if any) conditions have changed from my last time out there.  What were you and Fishing Rhino throwing?  Did he land all his 13 fish on the same/similar techniques or were you both just throwing the tackle box at em?

If I remember right low to mid 70's. 

Tom threw Fat Ika, Rage Tail, a 7" worm whose name I forget, and a couple other soft baits.  Most were green/red flake.  I started with a green/ red flake Rage Tail, gourd green Zoom U-Tail and green/red flake Ned.  After Fishing Rhino landed his fifth or sixth bass I started switching baits frequently. 

We worked off the shore in 8-10'.  I caught my smallie in deeper water.

Thanks for the info.  Going with my same buddy as last time, but we'll have to fish together soon!  Maybe we can hit the Q together one last time in the coming week or two before they shut her down for good, if not I've got my Yak and I go all over the state.

Fishing Rhino said they close 15 October.  Tom's retired, so his schedule is pretty open, as is mine, though I've got 15 years left.  Perhaps we could get a group from this thread to meet out there and close the season right.

I caught most of them on a shaky head rig.  A 3/16th ounce Vike shaky jig head and a seven inch SK super finesse (elaztech) worm.  The first two were caught on a wacky worm, 4" Senko Watermelon w/black and red flakes.  1/8 ounce jig head.  Most were caught on the shaky head.  Depth of water was 8 to 14 feet.  The Fat Ika same colors as above, on a Keitech 1/8th ounce super round tungsten jig head with a 3/0 hook.  Put a small drop of loc tite super glue where the bait buttoned up against the jig head.

I use a safety pin and a candle and melt a hole about an inch deep along the centerline of the head of the worm.  The Vike hook has a coiled spring keeper and you cannot get any type of keeper (except those on the NED jig head) into the head or body of the bait.  I close the top coil, stretch the coil a bit, then insert it into the worm and twist it on.  A drop of super glue will keep it there for several fish.

By the way, Dogbone threatened me with bodily harm via a hitman if I posted our score for the day.  Don't mess with him.

I'd be up for that.  I'll be at gate 43 tomorrow morning, I drive a maroon GMC PU & I have a Q boat  a white 16ft Spectrum with a 25 merc4 stroke and have been fishing there for over 30 yrs.  I'm like Fishing Rhino retired and am  frequently looking for someone to tag along as most of my fishing friends are younger.  I usually fish out of area 3 gate 43  I love to meet up with other fishermen  if any of you see me in the lot or on the water stop and say hello or we could meet there.

This is the Vike shakey head.  I pinch the top loop/coil closed, then bend it so the bend of the loop is up, and stretch the coil slightly.   I find it easier to bend the coil up to "screw" the bait onto the coil.  Once it is glued to the weight, and the glue has set, I bend it down so the coil is facing the point of the hook, as shown in the image below. 

From there, it's easy to "adjust" the coil so you can fish it weedless, with just a pinch of "skin" hiding the point,   or so the worm rides on the bend of the hook with the wire going through the body of the worm, and the hook and barb fully exposed..

 Id be up for closing Quabbin right. If I could tag along I with you all, I would really like that, as I have't been there in 16 years. I remember the rental boats there, had the typical tin boat 3 bench seating. But since its been so long have no idea if they upgraded them. Those rigs are not good for my degenerated disc's as while sitting, my butts to low, and knee's are to high, which put's agonizing pressure on my spine. Ive been thinking of getting one of those clamp on seat bases and putting a cushioned seat on it just for Quabbin. But have yet to pull the trigger on it

  Je1946,.. If your Q boat is more like my boat with comfy raised cushioned seating, I could fish more comfortably. I'd be willing to come meet you first, beit a coffee or whatever. So it's not a blind meeting at the res. and if you feel like we could fish together, Id also be willing to throw some cash in for gas and so on, which could be discussed in advance.

   I too am out of work, and time is mostly wide open other than doctor appointments.

   Also,... I am seeking anglers that would like to join me fishing out of my 16 foot deep v tracker, 40 hp merc tiller, ulterra tm, with helix 9 and lowrance x 85. I cant go fish unless someone is with me as I need someone to drive the truck out after I load the boat back on the trailer, because,.. the new ulterra trolling motor is so big I cant climb over it to get out of the boat to drive the truck myself. My back wont allow it.

 You can pm me if you'd like, I just wanted to get this out here, since your all talking meeting up.

Can't make Quabbin  again this week, but count me in from next week on. 

Going to see if my canoe can make it through the channel at Sawdy.  It had gotten too low to navigate in one place.  Hoping the rain last weekend raised it enough.  An inch or so higher would make it navigable with just a bump here and there.  Haven't fished it in a couple of weeks..

Arrived a little late at the Quabbin (7AM) gate 43.  I have been fishing that place for 30yrs and have never seen water level so low.  Launch went well, boat fired right up and down the lake we go.  Get about a 1/2 mile out and the motor dies.  After having gone over everything yesterday at the house and installing a brand new battery for the bow mount to say I'm just a little a PO'd would be an understatement.  So it was stay close to the ramp and use the TM, managed 2 smallies one pushing 4 and the other at 2.5 and a few dinks.  Put the boat back on the trailer and headed home at 1:30.  Pulled the cover and changed the gas filter and some fresh gas still no go.  Called the shop and in she goes tomorrow AM.   Hopefully nothing to serious, and I'll be back at it later this wk.
