Had yesterday off so I drove to Houghton's to see if I could catch something.  Total bummer, it was skimmed over.  I did the next best thing and tied a Silver Buddy on and fished Blue Hills Reservoir for almost an hour until my knot failed and my Silver Buddy flew about 100 yards... then to the bottom of the reservoir.

Oh well.  I'm headed to Orlando in two weeks, and am bringing my travel rod.  The resort we stay at has a small lake on the property.  I'm renting a boat and going to catch a FL bass.

Have a great time on your Florida adventure.  Catch 'em up while you're down there.

Jiggy, I had my surgery yesterday.  Piece of cake.  If they give you a choice of anesthesia, I'd recommend propofol and a nerve block on the knee.  I had two choices, snoozing on the propofol until the knee was thoroughly injected with a nerve block, then they'd cut back on the propofol and I'd know what was going on, or turning off the propofol when the doc was done.

I'd suggest "snoozing" until you are on your way or in the recovery room.

The process is over in the blink of an eye once they start running the propofol.

I can remember them wheeling me into the OR, and getting me on the table.  After that, the next thing I recall was coming to as they were wheeling me into recovery.  The entire process took about a half hour.

The knee feels great.  I'm on a pain killer for 24 hours.  After that, take as needed, if needed.

Good luck.  Hope your experience is as good as mine was.

Good to hear Tom! MRI results came back not as bad as originally thought, but there's still something going on there. He's recommending a cortisone shot and leaving the meniscus alone for now.

i don't know. I've been working out, but no where near the intensity I would like, walking better with minor/bearable ache. Not sure what to do. His advice, let the pain be your guide.

i gained some holiday pounds and I'm hoping to lose them plus a few more. I'll wait and see where my knee is at in a couple of months to make a decision.

I don't think a torn meniscus will heal itself.

If you were talking about  a joint replacement, that's a whole 'nother matter, since replacement joints will wear out, and if you live long enough, need to be replaced.  So, they delay doing a total knee, hip or whatever for as long as possible.

My understanding is that a torn meniscus will only get worse, and there is no downside in doing it sooner.  It depends on what discomfort you are having to endure, and how much it limits your normal activities.

My knee is a little sore today, but nothing bad.  When he got into the knee, the damage was worse than it showed on the MRI.

In any case, with a meniscus repair, you are not looking at a prolonged recovery that can lay you up for weeks or months.

That's just it, the MRI didn't show much, maybe a partial tear, but he didn't think it was prudent to go in there based on the images. He did say that it really is hard to tell unless he did go in there. Very confused. I just want to be able to exercise without having to think about it. Some days I feel good and then I get on the treadmill or go for a run, my knee feels like its giving out or I have poor form and have to stop and do something else.

Glad it went well for you Tom, I'm sure you'll be pain free in no time.

Hey, it's your decision to make.  If there was something I did on a regular basis, or something I enjoyed, and a sore knee or wrist, or thumb or whatever, I'd want to get it trimmed, and out of the way.

I don't know of any downside to having a torn meniscus trimmed so that dangling parts could not get between the joints, causing them to bind up.

Risk vs. reward.  In this case, for me it was a no brainer.

The insurance deductibles are killing me, Rhino. I'm in a bit of a hole now between my knee and the rest my family. Generally we're not in the hospital, but 2015  turned out to be a freakish year for us.

That certainly does throw a monkey wrench into the works.

How does your deductible work?  Do you have to pay a certain amount before the insurance kicks in?  Or do you have a deductible on each visit to the hospital or doctors' offices?

My knee is probably 85 to 90 percent today.  I can walk up and down stairs normally.  The last remaining pain is when getting up from a low sitting position, such as on the john.  Even that has diminished considerably.  The flexibility exercises are working well.

Speaking of exercises, is there anything the doc recommended, that might help some?  The only lasting solution is to have the meniscus trimmed.  I have no idea what that bill would look like since we are now on medicare and have gap coverage as well.

Did you have to pay for the MRI?

We have a 5,800 family deductible.

I got bit by a dog off the leash while running this past fall. The meniscus tear, which I'm not sure if it's related or not. My knee's been a bother since that day. That night my son accidently closed a door on my wife's finger and broke the tip of her finger. Earlier in the year my son had to get a procedure done removing a mole on his face.

Just one thing after another this year after having gone almost 10 years between ER/Hospital visits.

I pay for a percentage of the MRI. Not sure how that works though.

Glad to hear your knee is responding well. That's amazing! Looks like your trip south should be painless.

With all the rain coming in tomorrow, I would think whatever skim ice formed will be pretty much gone...Saturday afternoon and/or Sunday looks like your best bet.

Gets worse Derrick, as you know, as the kids get older. Can't wait til I'm in my late 60's and 70's. I'll be filing for bankruptcy.

Pretty bad when you have to contemplate on taking a loan to pay your health care deductibles. Not the same country I was born in, that's for sure.

Sounds like we might have dodged a major bullet with the storm coming this weekend, I guess we'll have to wait and see... just a few more months until it thaws out again :P .

I've got the itch already, haven't been out since early November I don't think..

Just placed a nice tackle warehouse order... some new stuff to try, some good deals, and some old standbys.  Also got an order in the works from ACK that should help me improve my kayak fishing experience for the spring.  Maybe I'll try to take some pictures or get a video up in a few months once I've done some more work on it.

Hope everyone is well, looking forward to the spring!

Talk about the 'itch' ... I'm on the flight home from Orlando and I didn't fish ?.  We took a quick in/out before tax season so the boss, err, wife, could visit Mickey. Our resort closed their dock the only morning I had time to fish because of high winds (?!?!?!?!).

At the least, I know my Diawa Ardito travel rod is allowed as a carry on. I packed my reel/tackle in my luggage because I couldn't get a straight answer regarding its classification.

Oh well, it's almost February, so it won't be long.

Got the itch too. I started building rods to pass the time, almost done with my first build. I may have to put some of my stuff up in the flea market to make room for new toys

In two weeks, we're off to Daytona for the races, followed by a visit to our daughter in GA.

When we get home, it will be about four weeks to my annual trek to Pickwick Lake with a fishing buddy.  Those four weeks will give me time to get some yard work done, and to check on the local fishing.

I'll be home May first or second.  After that, it will be fishing, fishing, and more fishing.

Hoping to get to go fishing with more of you, and to resume fishing with those I met last year.

My two regular fishing buddies are out of the picture.  One moved to South Carolina, and the other got a promotion at work which requires more of his time, leaving less for family and fishing.

I knew gramps was in SC, although I thought it was a winter deal, I didn't know it was permanent. I'm assuming the other one your referring to is Tate. I was wondering what happened to him?

Have fun down south.

Nice! I've built about 6 myself. Nothing like catching fish on equipment and lures you built!

Post some pics, would love to see the build.

Will do, finished wrapping my guides yesterday. I'll probably expoxy everything this weekend, already planning my next build.

Yep, Brian is the other.  He got a promotion at work which has him out straight.  We are going to try to get together for a long weekend at Champlain this summer.
