My son just bought a 1999 F250 V10 with 90K miles.

We changed the oil and used the correct weight 5W30 synthetic blend.

The original oil looked like conventional.

Will we have any problems?

There is a chance you could.

If there are any leaks in the system, they could have been plugged up with the conventional oil sludge.

When you put synthetic in there, it'll break that stuff down and open up the leaks.

This of course only happens if there were leaks to begin with, so I wouldn't be too worried about it.

If you buy used, you should ask what kind of oil was in it when you bought it.

How could you tell it was conventional oil in the first place?

Nope. I have the same truck, with 225K miles. I've used non-synth on a few occasions, but mostly synth-blend the whole time. The key is frequent oil changes more so than whether or not it's synth. I change it every 3-5K miles like clockwork.

My truck still runs great.

I once bought a Camaro with 100k miles for $2,000, and ran it to 350k miles before selling it. One of the lifters was bad by then, but otherwise it ran well. I'd say I got my money's worth. Oil changes baby. :)

This is one instance.

I'm not saying it's more likely that you will have problems, but there is a chance.

you son got a f250 v10 and your worried about oil changes, wow i wish i would have them worries if i owned that truck...

He bought it for 4300.00 (book was $6300)and it runs perfect. It has a couple of small dents and it could use a new paint job, but hey..it's a truck. He is happy.
