TMDKENNELS Posted May 15, 2012 Posted May 15, 2012 Hello All, Has anyone ever altered the physical appearence of their lures to be more effective. I received an article about a Rattle Trap that was altered and made more effective.( zombie -shad ...pictured below) I decided to try it myself but have yet to try them out. Quote
outdoorsman110 Posted May 15, 2012 Posted May 15, 2012 I lay out crankbaits along the dash to alter the color and hue. It works quite well. I think Ike does the same thing. Quote

I never knew he actually did it for sure, that's awesome. I do it to all my Bombers, DT's and Bandits. I don't do it to my Kopper's and Lucky Craft's. Quote
Super User WRB Posted May 16, 2012 Super User Posted May 16, 2012 Thinkering with lures is a big part of bass fishing. Tom 2 Quote
Pepul Posted May 16, 2012 Posted May 16, 2012 I leave mi watermelon lizards in a pack with only chartreuse baits, and I take them out after a day and the tail and legs are chartreuse I do that because here in mexico we use chartreuse in almost every bait Quote
craww Posted May 16, 2012 Posted May 16, 2012 I've done tons of different stuff. sanded baits, finger nail polish, bigger eyes, etc. Another thing that works suprisingly well is put a 5'' stick bait in a bag of gulp. Over time it'll be 10'' and reek of Gulp! Quote
Vinny Chase Posted May 16, 2012 Posted May 16, 2012 Not often, but sometimes I had some chartreause with a pen to add some flair. Quote

WookieeJedi Posted May 16, 2012 Posted May 16, 2012 I don't really like to mess with them. Just a little repainting, sanding, fading, trimming, modifying lips, dressing hooks, slicing soft plastic, adding rattles, changing rattles, removing rattles, changing or adding eyes, changing hardware, moving line ties, adding weight, or removing weight. Other than that, they are fine right out of the box. 1 Quote
River Rat316 Posted May 16, 2012 Posted May 16, 2012 lol at wookie. get a tube tail cutter from lure craft and cut your senkos with it at each end... cripes I can't believe I just gave that one up. There are other mods you can do to plastics, cuts here, boiling water there, jj's magic here. Spinnerblades with swivels attached here or there, its fun to experiment and usually pretty cheap, as said before the LC's and more expensive baits don't get touched but almost everything else does Quote
rockfish Posted May 16, 2012 Posted May 16, 2012 Curious. Why fade out the baits? I'm not against it just wondering what the idea is behind this? Don't you want bright bold colors since being under water esp deeper will wash out colors as it is? Quote
bassin is addicting Posted May 16, 2012 Posted May 16, 2012 i've let red shad worms bleed on watermelon worms and craws, etc.....for a "bleeding" look....whether that made a difference or not...i'm not sure..but i've caught plenty of fish on them... Quote

Don't you want bright bold colors since being under water esp deeper will wash out colors as it is? With some colors, some fading and matte texture can make the colors pop a little more in the water. Some colors get toned down using the same method. Shad-colored baits will sometimes need this if they are really glossy. Once the finish is a little rough, you can take some small drops of red paint and rub them in for a really nice "battle-damaged" look. I like craw patterns to be a little rough, too. Especially the green ones. Quote
loodkop Posted May 17, 2012 Posted May 17, 2012 I have never met a lure I couldn't modify. Unfortunately I have also succeeded in totally stuffing up more lures than I would like to recall. I like to show them something else. Quote
piscicidal Posted May 17, 2012 Posted May 17, 2012 I'm always tweaking stuff. Here's one of my Frankenstein creations...I cut the legs off a horny toad and welded them onto a Lake Fork Frog body with a soldering iron. I like the horny toad leg design as they don't flop around on the cast, creating wind drag. I find I can cast them longer and more accurately. I like the Lake Fork frog body as it is bigger/heavier. When I combine the two, the result is a top water toad very similar to a horny toad, but much bulkier. I can cast this thing a mile. I don't do this modification everytime, as it gets a bit expensive. I end up destroying two frogs to make one. Quote
