I'm looking for a new GPS for the car. Not sure what to look for, or what to buy. Just about every brand/model says they are the "best"! Prices are all over the place. What should I look for and which brands have you tried that you like. Thanks!

This is the one I've been looking at. Garmin nüvi 40LM 4.3-inch Portable GPS Navigator (US)

We had a garmin nuvi before it got stolen and it worked well. The only advice I can give is to get one with free map updates.

x2

I have a TomTom that works well, but I got a bit lax about updating the maps and now they want to charge me almost $100 to bring it up to date. Looks like I'll just have to deal with the old maps.

I have a Garmin Nuvi 1350 I think. Love it. "Squirrel" is a fun voice you can DL from the site for long trips.

I have had very good luck with Garmin products, not sure if portable units have the FM traffic feature but if they do it is a great feature to have. It has saved me from bad traffic multiple times.

The Nuvi 40LM models are nice. They have a big screen and the lifetime map upgrades which are especially useful for those of us in metropolitan areas that have constant road changes. You can get them on clearance at Dick's Sporting Goods for $90

I purchased a TomTom thru QVC a couple of years ago that came with lifetime free map upgrades. It's simply head and shoulders above the abomination that came from the factory in the wife's Prius. Best $140 I ever spent for a car accessory.
