Tucson Posted December 4, 2009 Posted December 4, 2009 Anyone use these? I picked one up recently and won't have a chance to use it for a few weeks, maybe longer if I have to wait for Springtime conditions. Seems like it fills a niche, a walk-the-dog lure that runs just a foot or two under the surface. Even if it doesn't catch fish it's a cool looking lure. Can't wait until the bass are busting shad on the surface. Quote
Super User Crestliner2008 Posted December 4, 2009 Super User Posted December 4, 2009 This is one of those lures which seems to want to take advantage of another series of lures; i.e.: the X-Rap. Not sure if there is any advantage with the Sub Walk. I suspect if you catch fish on one, you could probably catch the same fish on the other. I used one several times this season with no significant results. I'll stick with my X-Raps. Quote
bigtimfish Posted December 4, 2009 Posted December 4, 2009 I use them for saltwater. Trout and redfish love them. Quote
b.Lee Posted December 4, 2009 Posted December 4, 2009 Seems like a cool bait, I'll have to pick one up Quote
midnighthrasher Posted December 4, 2009 Posted December 4, 2009 Awesome bait!!!!!! I use the alot... caught my personal best small mouth on a silver one!!! the same day i caught a couple more before it got smoked by a pike Quote
Super User Bassin_Fin@tic Posted December 4, 2009 Super User Posted December 4, 2009 I am sure it MAY fill a niche somewhere and it is cool looking but in my opinion don't waste your money. The action is lacking and it just looks goofy in the water. Quote

I had my hands on one of these today and was about to get it but had this exact same thought so I put it back. Glad I'm not alone thinking the X-rap will do the same thing. I may get one later anyway, but for now I'm still building my supply of X-raps in different colors, sizes, and diving depths. Quote
Tucson Posted December 5, 2009 Author Posted December 5, 2009 Well I tried it out in the pool today and I wouldn't describe it as a "walk the dog" action. More like Drag the Dog. A steady retrieve doesn't do anything and it seems to need a pretty energetic twitch-twitch-twitch action. Anyway, I'm anxious to try it out on those early morning feeding times. Quote
midnighthrasher Posted December 5, 2009 Posted December 5, 2009 A subwalk has a completely different action than a xrap. A subwalk vs a xrap 10: -subwalk glides 12 inches under water, a xrap jerks between 2-5 ft -once you get used to a subwalk you can "glide" it anywhere. ( under docks, onto beds ) -a subwalk cast a mile, xrap's not as far Dont get me wrong i like the xraps alot but i will use my subwalk over a xrap any day of the week. They produce easily 3-1 for me. I have subwalks in 6 colors and xraps in 9. I love them both but subwalks just workd better for me Quote
Chaz Hickcox Posted December 6, 2009 Posted December 6, 2009 I got one, I like the action, but I think that I got mine too late in the season. I do like the gliding action. Quote
Tucson Posted December 6, 2009 Author Posted December 6, 2009 Took it back to the pool today and tried again. I found that several quick twitches followed by a slight pause to take up the slack, then several more twitches gave me a much better action. I was twitching it a little too hard initially but I think I've got it now. Really looking forward to springtime bustin' bass time. Quote
kikstand454 Posted December 6, 2009 Posted December 6, 2009 i fish mine mostly for reds and trout and do pretty well on it over grass and bars. i personally think that the action is not what i thought it would be when i got it.. but have found that if i "pop" it with a good foot or more of slack in the line... it has much more glide and pause. the slack doesnt neg. affect a hookset cause like a top water i seem to hook up more with a second or two of pause. jmo. csizzle Posted December 11, 2009 Posted December 11, 2009 Tucson, I see you're from AZ. It is not anything like an xrap in my opinion. I actually haven't thrown it for bass, but it is lethal for northern pike up at lake mary in Flagstaff. Quote
