prjavelin Posted May 8, 2012 Posted May 8, 2012 I went to Walmart today and like I always do I couldnt leave without a fishing lure. So I got a torpedo. I remember I Had one 15 years ago. I want to know, compared to today, what is the best topwater splash making lure? (I also have a jitterbug) Quote
outdoorsman110 Posted May 8, 2012 Posted May 8, 2012 I use the Lucky Craft T-Spalsh and the good ol' Rebel Pop-r for my splash and spit lures. Quote
Under the Radar Posted May 8, 2012 Posted May 8, 2012 Here in Central Fla, we have a lot of clearwater shallow lakes and ponds. So on most days that I'm fishing a top water such as you ask, it's a chug bug. Occasionally conditions dictate something else like a Pop-R, a Devil's Horse or a walk the dog type such as Sammy or Jimmy. My preference for the Chug Bug is predicated on the fact that it's a little more subtle than the Pop R and it can walk the dog as well. I think that the fish in these shallow waters can be a little more spooky, and thus require a quieter presentation. My best days with the top water have almost always had some wind. Calm days not so much. 1 Quote
Vinny Chase Posted May 8, 2012 Posted May 8, 2012 All depends on the conditions, but you cannot go wrong with a clear spook and a bone color pop-r. Quote

Super User iceintheveins Posted May 9, 2012 Super User Posted May 9, 2012 I love the skitterpop, because you can vary the intensity and sounds you make with it better than any other popper, not to mention it walks the dog VERY well. A torpedo will catch fish though and is pretty versatile. How do you guys do best with torpedo's and other propbaits, just curious? Quote
Super User LgMouthGambler Posted May 9, 2012 Super User Posted May 9, 2012 My go to's: Silver and black Chug Bug, Clear Zara Spook. Quote
Super User Fishes in trees Posted May 9, 2012 Super User Posted May 9, 2012 I like the Rapala and Lucky Craft versions of the popper. 6 or 7 weeks ago I would have said those are pretty much my exclusive choices for top water. These days, not so much. I've been making myself stick with a buzz bait over a popper with decent results. Mind you I've never had a great day with a popper or top water bait. ( A great day would be 40+ fish on the same bait, same pattern) Quote
Gavin Posted May 9, 2012 Posted May 9, 2012 I'd take a walking bait or a buzzer over a popper or a prop bait. Quote
