ksfisher Posted May 8, 2012 Posted May 8, 2012 any opinions out there? smoothness? casting ability? Quote
Delaware Valley Tackle Posted May 8, 2012 Posted May 8, 2012 The SX is a smooth and well casting reel especially after flushing and lubing the bearings correctly. I prefer centrifugal braking and feel the few $ difference for the STX is well worth it for the dual breaks and other features. If budget is a concern the S casts well and has the cent. brake only. If you can deal with the mag brakes and are a competent caster you'll like the SX Quote
Jacob34 Posted May 8, 2012 Posted May 8, 2012 I'm by no means an "expert" and I would consider myself a novice when it comes to bait casting reels. The Revo SX was the very first reel I bought that didn't have centrifugal brakes and to be honest I had the hardest time getting it dialed in consistently. I ended up with my backlashes. It's a great reel with a very smooth retrieve and a great drag, but I found the Revo S to be better suited for me personally and did not give me such a headache to operate. Once again I'm no expert and I believe that the SX is a great reel and it has more to do with operator error more than anything. Quote
Super User ww2farmer Posted May 8, 2012 Super User Posted May 8, 2012 I owned all the Revo's when they first came out , two S's, an SX, and STX...........Loved the S's, hated the SX, and was luke warm about the STX. For me, it was all about the braking system. I liked the centrifugal of the S. Two pins on, adjust the cast control knob to your lure and forget it. The SX's mag brake was terrible, it did nothing for me unless it was all the way on, and then it casted like crap. The original STX was not much better. I sold both of them and went on an ill-conceived Daiwa kick for a bit. I did keep the S's. IDK anything about the updated SX and STX, other than the SX still has mag brakes, while the STX has dual brakes. If I were to buy Revo's again, I would skip the SX and either buy another S, or try the STX with the dual brake system. JMHO. Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted May 8, 2012 Global Moderator Posted May 8, 2012 I also prefer the S over the SX or STX. Maybe I just don't have a refined enough feel but the S seems to cast better and is more trouble free to fish with. Quote
Jacob34 Posted May 8, 2012 Posted May 8, 2012 Glad to see that I'm not the only that thinks that Quote
jeb2 Posted May 9, 2012 Posted May 9, 2012 I've had the old and new version of the SX. Old one was really hard to control. To the point that it ended up on the shelf pretty quickly. And I always flush, clean, lube my reels before they ever hit the water. And often after that, too. But Abu had some kind of program on them, and exchanged it for a brand new, current model of it for free. And it's much better with it's 2 additional magnets. But it can still be finicky at times. Not my favorite reel, by far. My only other Revo's are 4 current generation Premier's. I can't say enough good about those. The best dual braking system on the market, in my experience. Light, super powerful drag, smooth as butter. Incredible reels. I think the STX is just a heavier version of the Premiers, so that's where I'd focus if you can't afford the Premier. Quote
elkriverangler Posted May 9, 2012 Posted May 9, 2012 I have the newer Model SX and also an S Model.I have not had any issues with Backlashes on the SX. I had heard of some problems before I got the Reel. On the SX it is crucial when changing Lures and adjusting to have the Brake Off then adjust the Cast Control for the Lure you are using then reset the Magnetic Brake. This tip was passed on to me from DVT when I got the Reel and I have not had issues at all when dialing in this way. The SX in my opinion is a little smoother than the S but overall the S is about as good for less Money. Quote
j.bruno Posted May 9, 2012 Posted May 9, 2012 My sx had a bad spool when i bought it just check it out first if u can Quote
Delaware Valley Tackle Posted May 9, 2012 Posted May 9, 2012 Yes, setup is critical for the SX to work it's best Quote
Super User clayton86 Posted May 9, 2012 Super User Posted May 9, 2012 I have the newer black and red SX and love it iv never had an issue with it and I bought a display model from DSG so everyone had there paws on it before me. I have done zero maintenance to it iv also only had it for a season but it got used seriously every single day for the whole season. I can honestly say iv never back lashed that wasn't a freak accident ( wasn't looking snagged my tackle bag on the back swing it wasn't pretty big big nest) my SX is also my first "higher" end reel all my others before it were cheapo quantum combos from DSG. 21farms Posted May 9, 2012 Posted May 9, 2012 the revo SX has got to one of the more-discussed reels on this and other forums. a search for "revo SX" will yield tons of information. 1 Quote
bbrittksu22 Posted May 10, 2012 Posted May 10, 2012 its sucks not smooth doesnt cast worth a darn all around pile of junk....jk no idea but hey dylan Quote
BradH Posted May 10, 2012 Posted May 10, 2012 I'll jump on the Revo S bandwagon. Great reel and they are down to around $100 now. I like them so much I think I'll drop a set of winch gears in one next time I need a deep crank or big spinnerbait reel. Quote
jj'sbassinforfun Posted May 14, 2012 Posted May 14, 2012 I must be an odd one, I perfer the SX over my S or STX. I get much longer casts without the centrifugal. I also have been tempted by the Daiwa's. The price of the exceler(and some cheap tuning) is hard to beat. Just gotta get me a zillion crazy crankr one of these days! Upgrading the older all black SX's with the newer 2010(red highlights) mag assembly helps them a lot. There are 3 extra mags on the newer red models. Quote
SausageFingers Posted May 14, 2012 Posted May 14, 2012 I have four of them. My first experience with the SX was a little rough. Took a few runs to get it dialed in. I find them to be excellent performers now that they're set up correctly. I have an STX as well. Its a very nice reel but I prefer the SX. For some reason, I'm not a fan of the centrifugal braking systems. Quote
dustin11 Posted May 14, 2012 Posted May 14, 2012 I have 2 and I'm pretty sure they are both sx's. I paid 170 for both. I like both of them but I also hav a curado and its in the sameprice range and i like it more than the revos. Jus my opinion. Quote
quanjig Posted May 14, 2012 Posted May 14, 2012 The new generation SX (blk/rd) is soooo much better than the previous generation SX. Get it, it's a nice reel especially with the price reduction at TW! Quote
jtesch Posted June 13, 2012 Posted June 13, 2012 I have the newer version and I think the magnetic brake system they use sucks. I'm not a revo basher as I love my Premier and mgx but as someone who used Daiwa's for many years the SX'S brakes are crap and if you usually cast really hard the reel is almost uncontrolable. Just my opinion Quote
Diggy Posted June 13, 2012 Posted June 13, 2012 Good reel is many aspects but can be finicky at times(braking). I have 4 bc reels now and had as many as 7 and the revo was the most troublesome out of all of the reels priced over 100 dollar MSRP. If I had to pay current or full price I wouldnt have bought it after using it, Id opt for something else Quote
21farms Posted June 14, 2012 Posted June 14, 2012 the SX is probably the singlemost-polarizing reel i can think of...people either seem to really love it or hate it. my theory on it is that people who are consistently smooth casters love it while people who whip their rods while casting or who change casting techniques often have problems with it. i'm in the latter category. i've owned two of the first-generation and demo'd one of the second generation. when dialed in perfectly and i concentrate on my technique, i get beautifully long and smooth casts. if i fail to adjust the reel properly for the lure or the wind conditions or if i get excited and rush a cast, i'd end up with some of the most frustrating birdsnests ever. the good news is abu-garcia is revamping the SX for the third-generation models...they're getting rid of the "linear magnetic brakes" and replacing them with "magtrax brakes". the magtrax brakes are what abu uses in the max-series and work by varying the distance between the magnets and the spool...they work GREAT. the linear mag brake system employ a shield that was used to cover/uncover the magnets but, if you know anything about magnetic fields, you know this is anything but linear. it seems like abu has finally come around on this and is moving back to a more standard magnetic braking arrangement. my recommendation is to wait for the 3rd gen models. 1 Quote
Super User BassinLou Posted June 15, 2012 Super User Posted June 15, 2012 My original choice for the money was the S however the BPS I visited did not have any in stock, so I decided to spend a liitle bit more and bought the SX. I have been reading about the SX on this forum for quite some time now and fortunately for me I love my red and black Revo. I have it adjusted just right , its smooth and it can cast a mile, sometimes it goes too far. Quote
