stkbassn Posted May 9, 2012 Posted May 9, 2012 I'm down to one TV show, Hook n' Look, and no longer go to the traveling fishing shows/expo's. I like the way Hook n' Look show the sonar, how to rig and fish the bait, and how it runs under water. I most enjoy the underwater portion of the show where they show the fish in it's habitat and how it reacts to the structure, cover, and bait. They not only tell you where their fishing, but also give a tip on where to stay (OK, it's an ad too) I would like to see them use something other than Strike King though. During the last show I got to see "Big O" and his Space Monkey in action. X2 on Hook N' Look, those guys are great. I'm still a fan of the format of the Bass Pro's show and can't help loving FLW Outdoors for their Pro and College tournament coverage. I do get sick of the sales pitch...I like Shaw Grigsby but man if he doesn't mention Strike King or Dicks in every sentence then he isn't talking at all..... Quote
WookieeJedi Posted May 9, 2012 Posted May 9, 2012 I'm happy someone started this thread, I'm going to check out Hook and Look, and Lunkerville. My wife may not be too happy with y'all though... Quote
loodkop Posted May 10, 2012 Posted May 10, 2012 I believe most shows could be improved by having a "well rounded" host. I can easily put on another 10 or so pounds. Quote
brian smith Posted May 10, 2012 Posted May 10, 2012 At the risk of being ripped to shreds, tell me what you think. My brother and I document our fishing trips with a video. It's less than 10 minutes. 3 Quote
WookieeJedi Posted May 10, 2012 Posted May 10, 2012 I like the video, except for the jackfish! And tell your bro not to ever lean back in a canoe or kayak when going under any obstruction, even a bridge. 1 Quote
BassAssassin726 Posted May 10, 2012 Posted May 10, 2012 I havent seen someone using a spincast reel since i was like 5. lol I liked the vid though. Quote
lou304 Posted May 10, 2012 Posted May 10, 2012 When it was on, I actually like Mark Zona's show. He seemed to mix it up a lot, didn't fish private waters(at least not all the time)and I think he's got a pretty good on air personality. Quote

brian smith Posted May 10, 2012 Posted May 10, 2012 If you search "Fishing Wednesday" on YouTube, there are a couple more on there. We'll do them all summer. Quote
outdoorsman110 Posted May 11, 2012 Posted May 11, 2012 More of these would make the shows better. Quote
bigbassctchr101 Posted May 11, 2012 Posted May 11, 2012 I would love to see a fishing show that explains 5-10 viewer questions each episode. Why pick a chart/white over chart/blue? Buzzbait over a pop r, where and when? Summertime patterns, why would you choose back coves over mainlake points? Things like that. Quote
Super User bigbill Posted May 14, 2012 Super User Posted May 14, 2012 Put some on in the evenings after all most of us fish in the mornings so we miss them. I'm old school and grew up with gada about gaddis the flying fisherman and Jerry Mc Kinnis being the only TV fishing shows. I like watching the "In Fisherman" , "Dime Store Fisherman", Hank Parker, Bill Dance, Jimmy Houston and Woo Daves and the pro tips when i can catch them. Quote
Diablos Posted May 15, 2012 Posted May 15, 2012 teaching people how to fish based on reading and understanding your sonar. Quote
Deadeye-1 Posted May 15, 2012 Posted May 15, 2012 I too would like to see more shows based on instruction and less on "buy lure X". Back in the day when I was trying to learn how to hunt Spring Gobblers there were few vidoes available. The ones that were were all about call in and shoot, much like the throw and catch fishing shows today. I found a guy named Denny Gulvas that did videos where he called in the birds, but didn't kill them. He explained what he did and why, what to look for and how to adjust your calling to the gobbler's mood. Taught me a ton and made be a better hunter. Wish there was a fishing show that did the same. Explain how to read your fish finder, not only the $3000 ones but ones like the Hummingird 150 & 170 that so many guys use. What rod weight/action to use for different lures and why. How to rig different baits and how/when to use them. How to select line, the properties of each and why this one is better for this situation. When to fish a type of lure and why. How to select colors for different situations and why. In other words, try to teach the viewer how to be a better fisherman and not just a "look at me catch fish" type of show. Recently I've found a show called Lost Lake where they do some of this. Put a guy on a lake, let him figure it out, and explain what he did and why. Quote
birdy Posted May 15, 2012 Posted May 15, 2012 Agree with Glen, spot on. the economics drive the show. I've seen a couple of decent shows, like most TV there is about 5 minutes of quality in a 30 minute show. The great thing about shows today is the DVR, tape it, blow through the rubish and get the information if any there that is useful. Quote
