hossmp Posted May 4, 2012 Posted May 4, 2012 Hello, I am trying to find a dedicated Frog rod. Currently I have a St. Croix 7'6 that I use for flipping and pitching Jigs. It doesnt seem to do as well with the Frogs as I would like. My next steps down are more or less Med or Med/Hvy 7' rods that work better for Spinner baits and Worms. I tried a friends Daiwa rod that was a Frog specific rod and liked it aside from the price. I was wondering if anyone had any feedback on the Powell vs the Dobyn's I can see they are similar in size and power. I want to find the one that is the easiest to cast. I am not able to feel each rod in person and i want to figure out which one will have the tip that works best to get the frogs where I want them. Right now I am always going back and forth between rods that are not stout enough and ones that are way over the top and have tips that just cant get a frog to the location i want. Any suggestions or feedback is greatly appreciated. Quote
Super User BASSclary Posted May 5, 2012 Super User Posted May 5, 2012 Depends on what series of Dobyns your talking about. Im assuming you are talking about the Saavy series. IMO, Get the Powell over the Saavy series. The Powell rod has a nice tip with plenty of backbone, and the components aren't as cheap. They balance very well too. Also, if your going to use it for anything besides frogs, the Powells are going to be a bit more sensitive too. The big thing with the Saavy series is its all about balance. The balance on them is fantastic, but the cork is very cheap, and i'm not a fan of the guides. However, if you step up to a Champion vs. a Powell, the Champion will be the better rod. Quote

Yes, I am referring to the Champion series rods not the Savybseries from Dobyns. Thanks for the feedback. Quote
flippin and pitchin Posted May 5, 2012 Posted May 5, 2012 The Dobyns Champion has a fast tip and some serious back bone. If you fish jigs, it's one of the best jig rods out there. Me personally, I use the Champion 734 for all frog fishing but I don't know what kind of cover you fish. Quote
msolorio Posted May 5, 2012 Posted May 5, 2012 ive got em both and id choose the powell over the dobyns. im in the process of gettin rid of the dobyns as we speak. the tip on the dobyns is way too soft for my liking. i lost more fish on the dobyns in the 2 or 3 months or so that ive had it then i have with any of my powells, cashions, and phenix even with a gnarly hookset. hossmp Posted May 5, 2012 Author Posted May 5, 2012 Thanks for the replies. The cover that I fish varies a great deal from pads so thick it seems you could walk on them at times to what I would consider fairly light. It seems like most people so far prefer the Dobyn's rod over the Powell. Both brands interest me as they are not common off the rack brands in my area. I can only really handle the St. Croix and Loomis brands readily. From what I can tell there is also about a 60 dollar price difference between the Dobyn's Champion series and the Powell Frog rod. 21farms Posted May 5, 2012 Posted May 5, 2012 i have not handled the powell frog rod but i do have the dobyns 735c which i chose because i like full handles. however, it is lighter in power than i was expecting when i ordered it and lighter than what i'd want in a frog rod...i do love the rod for other stuff but less than ideal for frogging in heavy pads and mats. i do have other powell rods and i love 'em too. good luck. Super User SoFlaBassAddict Posted May 5, 2012 Super User Posted May 5, 2012 While I like the 735 Dobyns, I'm in love with the 736 for frogging. Some people say that it's a little to fast to walk a frog, others tend to like it. Personally I've found myself as part of the second group. I haven't found a spot yet where that rod can't get used for a frog. Quote
