Gotfishyfingers? Posted May 3, 2012 Posted May 3, 2012 This weekend May 5 is a Supermoon. A Supermoon occurs when the moon hits its full phase at the same time it makes closest approach to Earth for the month, a lunar milestone known as perigee. Scientists also refer to the event as a "perigee moon," according to a NASA video on the 2012 supermoon. This will also make for a very bright evening. Now my question is, what type of effect on fishing, day or night, do you think it will have? I always like to think positive . So my thinking is, Big bass will be prowling shallow waters feeding aggressively!!! Quote
Super User 00 mod Posted May 3, 2012 Super User Posted May 3, 2012 Might make daytime fishing a little tougher, as nighttime feeding will increase. Hate to be the barer of bad news, but it is how it happens around here! I am going on the 4th and 6th, so hopefully I am wrong and slay them! Jeff Quote
theonethatgotaway Posted May 3, 2012 Posted May 3, 2012 thats cool to know im betting the night fishing will be great Quote
Gotfishyfingers? Posted May 3, 2012 Author Posted May 3, 2012 I was thinking it was going to make the day time bite tuff to. Kind of sux though, it has to land on Margarita Day! Quote
Fishing Cowgirl Posted May 3, 2012 Posted May 3, 2012 Well, we will see how it is on the 5th for our local Big bass an Hour tournament. Might be good then, but bad on Sunday for the Couples Tournament. Quote
Super User bigbill Posted May 3, 2012 Super User Posted May 3, 2012 Fish the super moon days before it happens and days after it happens like 24/7 or as much as you can. The guys at InFisherman did a show on fishing the full moon phases for record breaking trophy size fish at this time. I found the fishing was better following the mauri charts on when to go fishing for the most productive times. I wish that Outdoor life still had there listings. Quote
NebraskaBasser Posted May 3, 2012 Posted May 3, 2012 "Might make daytime fishing a little tougher, as nighttime feeding will increase." Soooo... since the "nighttime" feeding would be greater... and Saturday the 5th is the Supermoon/perigee-moon, will that make Sunday's fishing tougher (since the Supermoon is on Saturday night?), or Saturday's fishing tougher (from the moon on Friday night)?? Is this "milestone" gravity-related like solunar periods, or only moonlight-related, making the local weather/cloud-cover the determing factor? Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted May 3, 2012 Global Moderator Posted May 3, 2012 I'll be on my favorite smallie lake the 5th-7th. It has produced the last 2 state records within the last 10 years and I know there is another one in there, hopefully I'll find her this weekend Only problem will be I'm not sure how much night fishing my dad will be willing to do Quote
Super User slonezp Posted May 3, 2012 Super User Posted May 3, 2012 Have a tourney on Sunday. Guess I'll just throw in the towel Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted May 4, 2012 Super User Posted May 4, 2012 Have a tourney on Sunday. Guess I'll just throw in the towel You still have as much chance as anyone else. I have never noticed any impact from moon fazes. Quote

I'm not sure about fish but deer are definitely affected by the lunar phases. I think it's a combination of the light and the affect of the moon's gravitational pull as I've noticed definite patterns correlating to both. While the moon does affect the timing of the spawn I haven't yet noticed the same affect on fish that I notice on deer. But this isn't to say it's not there. Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted May 4, 2012 Global Moderator Posted May 4, 2012 I've always had tougher days the day before and the day after a full moon. I've always assumed this has to do with the increase in feeding after dark. It might be a mental thing too. Quote
Super User SirSnookalot Posted May 4, 2012 Super User Posted May 4, 2012 The moon phase isn't really much of a thought to me, weather and wind have more of an impact than the moon, conditions dictate where and what I'm fishing for. I feel I have had better success on the new moon, but that may just be a coincidence. I try not to get too high, lack of production breeds disappointment, I try and just take it as it comes. But I'm human and I hate when I get excited with perfect conditions and don't catch much. 1 Quote
birdy Posted May 4, 2012 Posted May 4, 2012 I've had more luck fishing when the pressure is changing, either up or down, than relying on lunar or solar tables. Quote
Keepitbasic Posted May 4, 2012 Posted May 4, 2012 I thought the fishing was good a few days before and a few days after the full moon. I'm not sure about the super moon. Doesn't really matter if your on the water it's a good day!! Quote
Super User Bassin_Fin@tic Posted May 4, 2012 Super User Posted May 4, 2012 I Will throw another mystery into this. It seems at some places but not all that i have fished they will absolutely go bannanas on the moon days. Other places it never seems to make a difference at all! Also there are places i fish where you can go out during the absolute best weather conditions and get nothing then go back during an awful blubird high pressure day with little breeze and slay them! Like any of it you never know when or where or what they will be eating and more times than not it makes absolutley no sense at all even though we annalize it to death. 1 Quote

OK... the first few posts made it sound like it was the "end of the (fishing) world" as we know it. I still go by the rule that the "best time to go fishing, is when you can"!!! Quote
Super User SirSnookalot Posted May 4, 2012 Super User Posted May 4, 2012 If this morning was any indication of what's in store for the weekend, stay home and cut the grass.......lol 2 Quote

LOL I didn't strike out but close to it. First cast hooked a snook on a jig with a worm trailer, current was very strong I had a very hard time landing a fish that went 7# at best, skunked the next 3 hours. Came home went bass fishing for an hour and not a strike. Yesterday caught 3 snook and 2 hefty jacks, bass fishing in the afternoon and caught 3 in about 30 minutes............what a difference a day makes. Quote
Triton21 Posted May 4, 2012 Posted May 4, 2012 Go to this website enter zip code of place you will be fishing and be on your best spot at the major times given. You will be plesantly suprised. Has worked for me many, many times. Kelley http://www.solunarforecast.com/solunarforecast.aspx Quote
NCbassmaster4Life Posted May 4, 2012 Posted May 4, 2012 I just think if anyone can get out on the water to do their own experimenting, that's really the only way to be confident. Quote
