hatrix Posted May 3, 2012 Posted May 3, 2012 I never really fish them and have had only decent success with them, and never really liked fishing them in general. Yesterday that all changed when I came at it with a different approach then I have before. It was good conditions to throw one so I figured why not give it a fair try, and just really stick with it all day. I cruised around making all these super accurate roll casts in the nastiest of stuff around the bank and under docks and over hangs. I could even get a little skip out of it for a couple extra feet to get back in there. It totally made me want to fish them way more after that and I had a lot of fun. Do you ever use a trailer? If so what do you use and why? What kind of rod do you use a cranking stick? I started off with a crank rod but didn't like it cause of all the weeds and junk I was fishing in. I switched to something heavier so I could rip the weeds and clear my bait mid cast when it got fouled. It might sound crazy but I used my Crucial 6'8" M/H XF and it worked awesome for ripping the grass and clearing my bait. Quote

"BRB" Posted May 3, 2012 Posted May 3, 2012 Sometimes I do and sometimes I don't. But when do I used a grub, twin tail grub, and a thing I believe is just call a spinnerbait trailer. I say about 90% of the time I use a trailer hook. Only time I don't is if I'm fishing in so thick stuff. But I love a spinnerbait if think you can fish it any way you want from bouncing it off the bottom to burning it on the top and everything in between. 1 Quote

Pepul Posted May 3, 2012 Posted May 3, 2012 Can I fish a 1/4 oz spinnerbait with a spinning reel? Quote
Jake P Posted May 3, 2012 Posted May 3, 2012 I use a trailer hook 100% of the time. I tried plastic trailers late last year and early this year and had alot of short strikes and missed fish. Went back to the trailer hook and have never looked back since. I get alot of fish on the trailer hook which shows me all i need to see. I fish Spinnerbaits every time im on the lake, for me its a must to throw them no matter what the conditions are. I have one tied on 24/7. I use a 6'6" MH F rod. I like the 6'6" rod because i can get more accurate casts, especially when i roll cast. Although i know alot of people who prefer a 7'. Your crucial is a great rod for spinnerbaits though. I woldnt change a thing. Quote
Traveler2586 Posted May 3, 2012 Posted May 3, 2012 I would not recomend spinnerbaits on spinning reels, but it can be done. Quote
Super User grimlin Posted May 3, 2012 Super User Posted May 3, 2012 Can I fish a 1/4 oz spinnerbait with a spinning reel? Yes,I do all the time.... Quote
Super User iceintheveins Posted May 3, 2012 Super User Posted May 3, 2012 You can fish spinnerbaits on spinning reels and they will work fine. However I do believe casting reels are the best thing to throw them with. Go as light as 10 pound and as heavy as 20 pound. I use trailer hooks whenever the vegetation isn't too thick, though I don't use soft plastic trailers that often and think I should. Quote
Super User smalljaw67 Posted May 3, 2012 Super User Posted May 3, 2012 I love spinnerbaits so much that I started making my own over 15 years ago!! I have baits designed for specific types of water like rivers and streams and others for lakes and ponds. I don't just cast a spinnerbait to open water, I throw them at targets so my weapon of choice to throw them is a 6'6" medium heavy, fast action rod that lets me rip it through grass and over wood, a crankbait style rod is good for more open water. Since I'm in or close to cover so much I don't use a trailer hook and I very seldom use a trailer, I believe trailers contribute to short strikes and that is my reasoning for not using them much. 1 Quote
hatrix Posted May 3, 2012 Author Posted May 3, 2012 @RW I have seen that video already but thanks for the link. I think the key is those low accurate roll casts right in the think of it. I figured some guys might use a cranking stick just so it can load up before you rip it out of there mouth. But that seems better suited for like fan casting and covering bigger areas of somewhat open water. It makes sense people use a jig rod or something with more power to rip the weeds and get those fish out of cover. That's why I used my crucial since it seemed a better idea to step up my rod for what I was doing. Although you can read/watch all you want about a subject there is no substitute for actually doing it your self and figuring out what works for you. I just figured I would ask so I could see how other people like to do it and maybe get a few ideas or tips along the way. Quote
Jigs 4 Pigs Posted May 3, 2012 Posted May 3, 2012 If i'm using a trailer, it's usually some sort of grub. If i'm getting short strikes and feel the need for a trailer hook, I take the grub off. The reason is i'm trying to make a smaller profile for the short strikes, and when I've used a grub with a trailer hook, I end up hooking the tail/tails on the grub every other cast. Quote
Dave P Posted May 3, 2012 Posted May 3, 2012 I used to use trailers all the time. Usually Mr Twister grubs. Now, I practically never do. Only time I use trailer hooks is if I'm getting "short" strikes. If they are taking it in their mouths, there's no need. Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted May 3, 2012 Global Moderator Posted May 3, 2012 I don't use trailers often, when I do it's a grub. Only time I use trailer hooks is if I'm using a trailer or if I'm fishing for smallmouths because of their tendency to run into a bait without opening their mouths. I like a 6' 6" M/F but the one I'm using is a St.Croix so it's closer to other rods MH. Quote
"BRB" Posted May 4, 2012 Posted May 4, 2012 Another great thing about spinnerbait you can caught any and all types of fish on it. Today I caught 3 walleye a bunch of white all three type of bass and even a flat head catfish on one! Quote
flippin and pitchin Posted May 4, 2012 Posted May 4, 2012 A spinnerbait is one of the best search lures you can use. You can fish it through the entire water column. It stimulates both feeding and reaction bites. I don't fish trailer hooks unless the fish short strike. Most of my skirt styles are long and a trailer is not required although a single tail grub come in handy to keep the bait up at times. I use a medium heavy 3 or 4 power rod because the baits I use have large hooks and a stiffer rod provides hook penetration and the ability to move fish from heavy cover. You can use a spinning rod for pond size baits effectively but once you move up to 3/8 ounce, BC is the deal. Quote
hatrix Posted May 4, 2012 Author Posted May 4, 2012 I am still killing them on spinners. Trying to really target spots like with a jig or t-rig and just get it in the nastiest places i can find. I am getting maybe 25% of them on the fall making low casts with a very quiet entry. In the past couple days my knowledge and technique with them has sky rocketed. No more just throwing one for like maybe 1 hour if that and not getting much then picking up a different rod I know I can catch them on. Total dedication to just throwing it all day no matter what and really trying to hone my skills with it. After putting in some time and really giving it a fair chance I can totally see why KVD digs on them so much. The bites are usually massive even from smaller fish and I like getting the rod ripped out of my hand just as much as I like catching them. Quote
Super User Bankbeater Posted May 4, 2012 Super User Posted May 4, 2012 I use to use trailers, but I was getting more hits without them so I quit using them. Quote
scbassin Posted May 8, 2012 Posted May 8, 2012 I fish spinnerbaits all year long & have been doing so for 40 years. Glenn's video is excellent & one should take heed. I do differ a little for I use 4 styles of blades, turtleback, willow, indiana, & colorado in some configuration of the blades. I only use gold or silver blades & on some I'll put 1 of each color. I don't use trailers I use skirts with long tails. The weights I use are from 3/16 to 1 oz. The rods I use are medium fast for 3/16 thru 1/4 oz,. medium heavy for 3/8 & 1/2 oz., & heavy for 3/4 & 1oz. I don't change configurations on the water what I did was to call War Eagle & have them make the configurations & colors I wanted so I just tie a different one on if needed. I always carry 3 rigged.
