Super User K_Mac Posted May 3, 2012 Super User Posted May 3, 2012 This is a very timely thread for me. I camped for 5 days last week at my favorite So Illinois lake. The land is owned by the Forrest Service and you have to boat everything in. We had a beautiful spot in a clearing in the woods, except for ticks and chiggers... I used the Deep-woods Off in liberal doses, and still managed to get bit up. Most years a tick or two is all you can expect-I probably found a dozen or more while there and another 5 when I had the wife do a close inspection when I returned home. The up-side is this provided a recreational opportunity... Quote
craww Posted May 3, 2012 Posted May 3, 2012 I haven't had any dog ticks on me this year, but I have found a couple of those little seed ticks every time that I have walked the bank this year. Luckily I got them off before they got anchored on. Man I hate seed ticks! Nothing worse than looking down at your legs and they're brown from the little tiny buggers. My 5 year old got covered in them last year. Stripped him down and it took almost an hour to get them off. They were every and i mean EVERY where, lol. Quote
Super User .ghoti. Posted May 3, 2012 Super User Posted May 3, 2012 100% deet is the only thing I've ever found to be effective. I spray down ankles, socks, pants cuffs and shoes. The taller the grass, weeds brush, etc is the higher you go when spraying your pants/shorts/legs. Quote
Jake P Posted May 3, 2012 Posted May 3, 2012 Just picked one off my ankle this morning when I got to work. I went out this morning before I had to be there. Anyone know the chances of catching anything from them? Ticks freak, me out. I have been checking myself all day! Quote
GLADES Posted May 3, 2012 Posted May 3, 2012 When I used to do a lot of camping in central Florida, sometimes I would find one near my "mighty oak" or parts south of there. What is the best way to remove them if they are already attached. Just pull them off? Touch with a smoldering match head, oil or lotion? Quote
Super User clayton86 Posted May 3, 2012 Super User Posted May 3, 2012 Never pull!!! you can separate the body leaving the head in there. Iv heard match/cigarette works best or duct tape? put the tape over it supposedly it suffocates them u leave it for some set time then peel it off idk just heard it don't know if it works. Iv heard oily lotion also iv only ever done the match thing Quote

endless Posted May 4, 2012 Author Posted May 4, 2012 a match is anybetter!?!? lol OUCH!! How long is a set time when coming to the tape method? Quote
Super User grimlin Posted May 4, 2012 Super User Posted May 4, 2012 I pulled one off the puppy yesterday.....Looks like I'm gonna have to get some stuff to put down on the yard this year. This sucks...I've never seen ticks since living here and I've had animals here since I've been here. I had one stuck to me at my waist last year....I was wearing a belt walking through the woods trying to get to a fishing hole. very unpleasant experience to be honest....came too close to my man parts.... Pull slowly, and pull straight up, dont twist and turn the body, you will break the tick. Putting tape or vaseline on the tick allows the tick to spit the fluid from his stomach into you, not good, and burning him allows for the same thing. You want to pull him out because that does not allow the fluid to leave him and enter you, the fluid is what contains the yummy lyme and other diseases. After you pull it out, then you can smother it, burn it or whatever devious methods you might think up to torture and kill it. Your best bet is to keep it in a bag, so if you do think you might have something, the doctor can test the tick right away and save you from weeks of antibiotics. Just had one on my asscheek yesterday, but I have had them on my back, chest, legs and 2, on separate occasions, on my ballb*g, talk about panic time. Quote
GLADES Posted May 4, 2012 Posted May 4, 2012 The pesky accoutrements on the man gear are a definite turnoff for the wife. Quote

Only thing iv found to help a little is 100%deet or the permithrin that my army uniforms come treated in it gives me a rash but I dont seem to be bothered by the bugs till iv washed the uniform several times or iv worn it for weeks straight but then its the stench of BO that keeps em at bay I think lol Quote
B-Dozer Posted May 5, 2012 Posted May 5, 2012 clayton, hard to believe we live fairly close together and you have never had a tick on you!. By any chance do you eat garlic in/on your food? I have been mixing some in my dogs food, after hearing about this, and they have been doing better than last year. I also believe some people are more "attractive" to ticks than others. You can also notice this with mosquitoes. Quote

Not to mention the amount of garlic bread i eat Quote
