barroncooper Posted May 2, 2012 Posted May 2, 2012 I've noticed that the ACS III doesn't seem very effective on my smoke 150. max setting is definitely more effective than free but it doesn't seem like it provides enough braking force. could the ring that the brakes ride on be oily? i notice it most on heavier jigs. it's not backlashing but it tends to over run just a little even on the max setting. i can fix it with the cast control knob but i typically like it to be on just enough that the spool doesn't slide back and forth. SausageFingers Posted May 2, 2012 Posted May 2, 2012 Not sure how long you've had the Smoke but it's probably worth sending it in to DVT to take a look at (unless you're proficient in reel maintenance). Friend of mine bought one and had similiar issues. Turned out it was bone dry on the inside, no oil, grease, hot sauce, etc. It was tuned up by our local repair shop. It operated much better after proper maintenance. That said, it was exchanged a week later for a Lew's. Just something about it that he didn't like. Quote
Super User .ghoti. Posted May 2, 2012 Super User Posted May 2, 2012 I had 7 PT reels, and every one had grease on the drum and in the brake blocks. I got it all cleaned up, then lubed the drum using one drop of oil on a q-tip. Open it up and take a look. Over-lubing is typical and easy to spot, and correct. Quote
