Bassnajr Posted June 28, 2008 Posted June 28, 2008 Hey, I am a fan of tube baits. I probably use them more than other plastics. I recently picked up a pack of Yamamoto Fat Ika solid tubes, i'll call them. I was just wondering what set up you folks use, and how you fish them?? ajr Quote
SoCalRob Posted June 28, 2008 Posted June 28, 2008 I generally rig them skirt up with a EWG 4/0 or 5/0. Use a MH rod since you have such a large hook. I would fish this on spinning tackle just cause it seems to fall more naturally with the way the line flows off a spinning reel. To fish the bait, cast it out and let it sink on semi-slack line. Make sure you watch your line cause many bites on this you will not feel. Your line will tighten up or move off to the side. If you don't get hit on the fall, you have a few options: either give it small hops of the bottom and repeat this process until you have retrieved the bait. OR your second option bring the rod tip up to make the bait rise and then drop your rod tip to let it fall back. This works best in shallower water, but this bait will cast a mile. Just make sure you're not overworking the bait...it does most of the work for you. You can throw this bait anywhere...at the bank, into grass pockets, near brush and timber...it will work everywhere. Super User Bassin_Fin@tic Posted June 28, 2008 Super User Posted June 28, 2008 X2, and might I add that by far the best hook for it is a 4/0 owner wide gap plus hook. A gamakatsu 4/0 works pretty good but doesn't have the "extra bite" for such a thick bait. Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted June 29, 2008 Super User Posted June 29, 2008 You rig the Fat Ika skirt up, weightless & weedless. Fish the bait exactly as you do a Senko. http://www.bassresource.com/bass_fishing_forums/YaBB.pl?num=1141053342 Good luck! 8-) Quote
Brian_Reeves Posted June 29, 2008 Posted June 29, 2008 x2 with Roadwarrior. They also work well weightless, skirt down, and fished like a soft plastic jerkbait. Quote
21farms Posted June 29, 2008 Posted June 29, 2008 i think a 4/0 hook is just about right. i rig mine both skirt up and skirt down. when rigged skirt down weightless, it sinks horizontally very, very slowly. i prefer skirt up...that makes it sink much faster and triggers a lot of bites on the fall. also, when rigged skirt up, when you cast toward tulles and such, it continues in the same direction of your cast underwater...this really gets 'em. njbasser Posted June 29, 2008 Posted June 29, 2008 x2 RW and Brian Reeves, they work great skirt up or skirt down on a 3/0 EWG and have caught some pretty big fish Quote
BigBrotherThunda Posted June 29, 2008 Posted June 29, 2008 been playing with a new tech for them and its produced some hawgs at night...u head, all i'll say for now Quote
darcy tucker Posted June 29, 2008 Posted June 29, 2008 It's been a long time since I have posted on the these forums but I remember when you first wrote that post RoadWarrior. I must thank you because since that time the Fat Ika has been my number one bass bait in Ontario! I find this bait way more productive than the senko. Quote

I must thank you because since that time the Fat Ika has been my number one bass bait in Ontario! I find this bait way more productive than the senko. The Fat Ika has been my #1 soft platic for a couple of years now. I think it really shines on still water targeting smallmouth. Universally, a "must have" bait! Quote
frog Posted June 30, 2008 Posted June 30, 2008 i rig fat ika from ''skirt side'' and i'm using it when i need looong casts. during retrieve i try to make a big mess on a surface... Quote
Triple R Posted June 30, 2008 Posted June 30, 2008 I'm new to bass fishing and been reading alot of post for infomation,so what do you mean when you say" rigged skirt up or down"? Does that mean where you insert you hook, from the front or back of the tube. Quote
Triple R Posted June 30, 2008 Posted June 30, 2008 thanks for the info and the picture. I thought that is what it meant but I wanted to ask to be sure. Quote
Triple R Posted July 5, 2008 Posted July 5, 2008 I couldn't find the Fat IKA so I bought a pack of Kinami Palm Tree's, they look very close to the IKA's. They must work the same cause I just came inside from fishing with my 6 year old son, and we caught 9 fish(I set the hook and he did all the reeling) on just one bait. So i wanted to say thanks for all the great information, I rigged it just like everyone said" skirt up",my son took that torn up bait and told his mom that it was magic and went to hide it in his room. Thanks again guys. Quote
EastTexasBassin Posted July 5, 2008 Posted July 5, 2008 The Kinami Palm Trees are the same bait, just under Yamamoto's son's brand. You got 'em...glad they worked for ya. Quote
Simp Posted July 7, 2008 Posted July 7, 2008 I bought a pack of these this week to try them out and they have found a new spot in my tackle box. I took them out a couple morning ago and they produced several fish and some big strikes. I made the mistake of starting out with a 2/0 or 3/0 hook and it was just too small. The first fish slammed it and I had him for 5 secs or so before he just plain come off the hook. I moved to a 5/0 and it provided the room for it to slide down the hook. I also LOVE the way it casts! I often call it the fish bomb. It just looks like a bomb falling from the sky and then the noise it makes is like a diver just sliding into the water. Does anybody know a good place to buy them online with a decent color selection? Quote

Super User Crestliner2008 Posted November 28, 2009 Super User Posted November 28, 2009 Please do not overlook the "Big Ika" as well. This is the 5" version of the same bait. The standard "Fat Ika" is 4". Sometimes the added bulk really turns them on. Quote
