babblingcarp Posted April 28, 2012 Posted April 28, 2012 What is the best all around hook size that fits most plastics? Quote
Super User Marty Posted April 28, 2012 Super User Posted April 28, 2012 There is no "best." Plastics come in a wide variety of sizes. If you use one size it might be too small for your largest baits and too large for the small finesse baits. I like the guideline that says use a hook with a gap at least double the diameter of the lure. 1 Quote
Bass_Fanatic Posted April 28, 2012 Posted April 28, 2012 I have found that a 4/0 EWG will work in most any situation. It isnt nessecarily the best size hook for everything, but it is the most flexible IMO. Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted April 29, 2012 Super User Posted April 29, 2012 Don't be silly, you need a variety of sizes. 2 Quote
babblingcarp Posted April 29, 2012 Author Posted April 29, 2012 Don't be silly, you need a variety of sizes. It is only temporary- I can assure you. I will buy more than one type, but as of now I am on a limited budget and I am looking at cerrtain hooks. Quote

I would at least get 3/0 and 4/0 but if you have to limit yourself to one or the other make sure you buy baits to match. Quote
Michael DiNardo Posted April 29, 2012 Posted April 29, 2012 If you tend to use bigger baits get a 4/0. If you use 6" and under, you can get by with 3/0. Mike Quote
wisconsin heat Posted April 30, 2012 Posted April 30, 2012 I'd say 3/0. 4/0 are slightly too big for 4in craws and creatures, which is a lot of my fishing. Quote
soopd Posted April 30, 2012 Posted April 30, 2012 3/0 if only choosing one. I have caught fish on finesse worms and 10" worms on a 3/0 because I was in a pinch. Quote
Super User LgMouthGambler Posted April 30, 2012 Super User Posted April 30, 2012 Most of the baits that I use work just fine with a 3/0. From 6-9" lizards, to 12" worms. Never had a problem. Only other size I use is a 5/0 for my thick baits, like the Gambler EZ. Quote
Super User J Francho Posted April 30, 2012 Super User Posted April 30, 2012 Well, it might help if you list the baits that you already have. Quote
Cal86 Posted April 30, 2012 Posted April 30, 2012 Go for the Gamakatsu value assortment pack. 25 hooks from 1/0 all the way to 5/0. Budget it. Justify spending a few extra dollars to put yourself into a much better position to bring in a lot more fish. 1 Quote
Super User eyedabassman Posted April 30, 2012 Super User Posted April 30, 2012 Don't be silly, you need a variety of sizes. If you told me that I could fish only one size it would be a 3/0 for me! But like RW said you need more than one size! Quote
Stasher1 Posted April 30, 2012 Posted April 30, 2012 If you told me that I could fish only one size it would be a 3/0 for me! But like RW said you need more that one size! Yup. Quote
Super User smalljaw67 Posted April 30, 2012 Super User Posted April 30, 2012 I would say 3/0 would be the most universal size. This is what I use for most of my plastics in the 4" to 6" range but I have used 7" worms with a 3/0 hook and it worked ok. Quote
kylek Posted April 30, 2012 Posted April 30, 2012 I normally use 4/0 or 5/0. If I had to choose just one it would be the 4/0. Quote
babblingcarp Posted April 30, 2012 Author Posted April 30, 2012 Thanks for all the feedback you guys. Most of my plastics range from around 3 inches to 6 inches. Quote
Super User J Francho Posted May 1, 2012 Super User Posted May 1, 2012 Length has nothing to do with hook size or style. You want to use a hook with a gap that is double the width of the bait. I have 10" worms that only require a standard 3/0 offset worm hook, and 4" creatures that require a 5/0 extra wide gap hook. Match the hook to the bait. Quote
