Why Smallmouth?

Just wondering why you guys would rather fish only smallmouth. I like largemouth and smallmouth.

Why would you assume that? I happen to hold the smallie in very high regard. Mainly for it's tenacity and never-say-die fighting ability. I also like fishing for LM's, pike, crappie and catfish.

Just the fact that there are a lot of "what bait should I use for smallmouth?" topics. So you are saying smallmouth give more of a fight than largemouth?

I love catching both LM and SM I live where there's abundance of both smallies in my opinion fight 10x harder then any large mouth and if im going for a pure numbers day smallies seem to be like said before when you find 1 you usually hook several in the same spot

I like both. And I like which ever one is biting best more...........on that day. Where I fish, you have the chance to catch either one on any given cast, more so this time of year and/or in the fall.

Reason I like SM best, other than thier obvious althletic abilities, is that they generally inhabit more pristine waters. You won't find them in your local carp pond like LM. More pristine waters usually offers more solitude, better scenery, less fishing pressure ect. All the elements that for me make a great experience to be remembered. Wether I'm at the local river catching 14 inchers or at houseboating at Dale Hollow and parked in the back of some cove where all I can hear are birds singing I prefer that to fishing any of the busy nearby reservoirs for LM, Musky or Crappie.

Without question! Especially early & late in the season. Pulling in a LM in early spring or late fall is like dragging in an old boot!

I prefer smallmouth because they fight harder, are more aggressive, and I love the acrobatics.

Plus I love fishing in rivers and catching smallies in fast current.

I'm a float fisherman...and I live near the Missouri Ozarks...Nothing better than floating your canoe down a bluff lined clearwater stream, catching smallmouth, and camping on a gravel bar. The fish run smaller than lake fish, but the total package is hard to top.

Smallmouth readily take a topwater, fight like crazy, are very pretty fish, and are more likely to inhabit river systems than largemouth. But Largemouth get bigger, hit bigger lures, and live in some territory that's downright fun to fish. (Frogs in the slop anyone?). To each his own, but I love both personally.

I've never had a Largemouth Bass, even a 18in Hog, put the kind of strain and pressure on a rod like a 12in Smallmouth can. Pound for pound the smallmouth bass is the best fight you can have in freshwater. Also, their finiky behavior alone is challenge enough and it may take an hour on the river to figure out what they want that particular day. Largemouth just need to be coaxed, Smallies, they need to be romanced. Lastly, their location. anybody can put a boat in on a lake and find "that spot" for Bucketmouths. Finding "that spot" on the river takes patience and a willingness to jump and and get messy, get wet, and in some cases risk your neck. I've dangled from trees, crossed paths with bear, even wrapped my gear in garbage bags and forded the river in 50 degree water to get to "that spot". (side note, I typically fish the Schuylkill river in Pa. Sometimes boats aren't and option.) Half the challenge of the day on the river is getting to those locations that most people wouldn't dare. I love it! This all is not to say I won't go out on the lake and play with the Buckets on a given day. But, the river and those little brown beasts are what really calls to me.

Show me a largemouth that can clear 2 feet out of the water on a single jump. Smallmouths are just hard,hard fighters,what they lack in size(meaning they don't get as big as LM do) they make up for it in pure brute and power.

Pound for Pound a smallie outfights a largemouth everytime in my experience. I like the fight.

It's all about the fight!! A 1.5lb smallmouth put up a better fight than my 4.5lb personal best largemouth. Catching my pb 5.3lb smallmouth was a blast!! I will never forget that one. Don't get me wrong though I like both of them. To me the best part of fishing is "hunt" so to speak.
