ROCbass Posted April 27, 2012 Posted April 27, 2012 Lately after holding the door for someone or doing some other small good deed, I've noticed myself saying 'mhmm' or 'yup' when they say thank you. The more I think about it, the more it bothers me that I do this, so I've started making a conscious effort to actually say you're welcome. Some may think that it's not a big deal because you already did something nice for the person, but it just seems to me that if they have the decency to say thank you (it amazes me how many people don't but that's another topic), then I should at least be able to say you're welcome instead of muttering some non-word half syllable. So my question today is, how do you respond when someone says thank you, and what do think is an appropriate/sufficient response? Quote
OHIO Posted April 27, 2012 Posted April 27, 2012 I either say yup or no problem. I don't say you're welcome because I don't think it's that big of a deal to open a door for someone. Actually I do say you're welcome when someone doesn't say thank you. I get a little irritated at that. Quote
preach4bass Posted April 27, 2012 Posted April 27, 2012 I typically say "no problem". But, my folks did raise me to say "you're welcome," so maybe I need to get back to my raising! Quote
Super User J Francho Posted April 27, 2012 Super User Posted April 27, 2012 Someone says thank you, I say you're welcome. This simple courtesy has pretty much completely eroded away in modern culture. Pretty sad. Quote
Super User clayton86 Posted April 27, 2012 Super User Posted April 27, 2012 depends what im doing some times its a "yup" "mmhmm" "yeah" others get "your welcome" or "no problem" I think its dependent whose saying it. I know there strangers but I tend to say your welcome to my elders but if its some one my age group or younger or just idk how to put it but some one who would probably give me the "yeah" reply I just say yeah to them. One thing iv noticed to about myself is im super polite to the locals here in kuwait idk why but I treat foreigners better even state side if i run into some one from another country im usually pretty polite to them my wife's pointed it out before idk why I do it. Super User Sam Posted April 27, 2012 Super User Posted April 27, 2012 You are welcome. And smile! 2 Quote
Super User tomustang Posted April 27, 2012 Super User Posted April 27, 2012 I generally say thank you, but you (i as well, since force of habit from hearing thank you) are giving the courtesy of opening the door first and don't need to reply to his reply. It ends up being a response to their response Quote
Ima Bass Ninja Posted April 27, 2012 Posted April 27, 2012 My pleasure! It's become habit since getting married to a chic fil a employee. It's the response they train you to say when a customer says thank you. I guess it just become habit from hearing it so much. 2 Quote

I'll definitely be stopping there a time or two when I'm in South Carolina in a couple weeks. Quote
outdoorsman110 Posted April 28, 2012 Posted April 28, 2012 Don't mention it, you're welcome and occasionally YEP. Quote
Super User Raider Nation Fisher Posted April 28, 2012 Super User Posted April 28, 2012 If its someone older than myself they get a "your welcome". If they are my age or younger then its either "not a problem" or "your welcome". If I said yup or yep or anything other and my grandmom heard me she would knock me upside the head. Also heaven forbid you run past a lady, and not hold the door for her. That got me in more trouble with her than I thought possible. She told me, regardless of how big of a hurry you are in there is always time for you to be polite and/or curtious. She ingrained this into me from a very young age. Its just like; please, thank you, yes and no sir, yes and no mam, etc. The other one I got was If someone new comes up to the table while you are out eating and introduces themselves. You stand up, shake their hand if it was offered, introduce yourself and then you may sit back down. If you are waiting somewhere and all the seats are full. If a woman or someone older enters the room, you had better unass the chair you are in and offer it to them. I'm telling you, she took the old school route with my siblings, cousins, and myself. Also I don't recall having anyone ever not saying thank you, after me holding a door for them. Guess things are just different down here. Quote
Super User Bassn Blvd Posted April 28, 2012 Super User Posted April 28, 2012 If the person makes eye contact with me when they say "thank you," then I say "you're welcome." If they don't make eye contact then I just say "mhmm." If they don't say "thank you" then I say "you're welcome" loud enough for them to here me. Quote
Super User Bassn Blvd Posted April 28, 2012 Super User Posted April 28, 2012 Also I don't recall having anyone ever not saying thank you, after me holding a door for them. Guess things are just different down here. I held the door for a young lady yesterday. She was about 5 steps away from entering the gas station so I stood there and held the door for her, I even gave a smile. She wasn't attractive or scantly dressed, either. I was just being polite. That didn't say or even acknowledge me. It would be an understatement if I told you I was just a little p'sd off. Quote
Jake P Posted April 28, 2012 Posted April 28, 2012 I am in and out of hospitals, facilities and patients homes all day so holding a door or elevator is second nature to me. I always say yes sir, yes mam, thank you or i appreciate it when someone holds something for me. If im doing the holding and someone thanks me i still say yes sir, yes mam, your welcome or my pleasure. If someone doesnt thank me i dont make it a point to be an A hole. Why waste your breathe? Sometimes eye contact and a nod works too. Quote
Kcoyote11 Posted April 28, 2012 Posted April 28, 2012 Usually do reply Your welcome or I will say Yes Maam or Yes Sir. Quote
Super User clayton86 Posted April 28, 2012 Super User Posted April 28, 2012 Funny this came up I just had a incident regarding this happen. I was at breakfast chow walking out getting my cover out of my pocket when I catch a Coast Guard officer about to catch the door right in his face so I grabbed it and held it open for him. Not a thank you nothing just a dirty look I guess you could call it, it wasn't even like I was the one that closed it on him the door was propped open and they opened the door at the end and it causes a wind tunnel effect and slams the doors or knocks the trays out of your hands. I see this officer all the time to idk know his rank it would be a Major in the army but I'm not familiar with the CG rank structure hes one of the ones whose always looking for a salute and will go out of his way to make sure to get close to you so you have to or he lectures you if you don't because you had something in your hands. Normally I don't have a problem giving the officers the respect they deserve except this one now next time ill just let the door smack him in his face lol. Quote

Next time thump your right arm off your chest. Extend it all the way in front of you in salute. Snap your heels together and say, "Ja wohl meine Fuhrur!" Quote

Super User Sam Posted April 28, 2012 Super User Posted April 28, 2012 Sorry to hear about the Coast Guard officer. I have never met anyone in the Coast Guard that was not a super person. Always enjoy speaking with them and hearing their stories on the high seas. Quote

Super User grimlin Posted April 29, 2012 Super User Posted April 29, 2012 Simple eye contact and a head nod most of the time. Been known to go yup.Mmhmm,no problem and you're welcome.... guess it's how I'm feeling that day. LOL Honestly it has never bothered me on either end when i say "thank you" and don't get a reply back. Heck even if the person doesn't say thank you to me either. I let my act define me as a person.... 1 Quote
Jigs 4 Pigs Posted April 29, 2012 Posted April 29, 2012 I work retail, so every customer that comes in the door I say "Hi, how are you doing today?", nothing is more annoying then when they're on their phones and give me the look like "Can't you see I'm on the phone?". Sorry for doing my job! Quote
SuskyDude Posted April 29, 2012 Posted April 29, 2012 You're welcome, yep, sure, mmhmm, no problem. All acceptable. Quote
