TxBankFisherman Posted April 27, 2012 Posted April 27, 2012 Sold my Calcutta 200 I had forever... looking to get another saltwater reel... Recommendations?? I loved the reel but want something smaller that doesn't wear you out so quick... Thinking of the smaller Calcutta 50 reel... the main requirement is to be something I can palm...and good drag.... Thanks... Quote
Super User J Francho Posted April 27, 2012 Super User Posted April 27, 2012 A 50 seems pretty logical. It's built pretty much the same as the 200. Quote
outdoorsman110 Posted April 27, 2012 Posted April 27, 2012 I've heard some good things about the Abu Garcia Alphamar it goes for 150$. 1 Quote
0119 Posted April 27, 2012 Posted April 27, 2012 The 50 has very little capacity for saltwater appropriate line. Ive had 2. They were alot of fun but I never used bigger than 8# mono on them. Fun for schooling seatrout. With braid you could do flats fishing but Id stay away from structure since it doesnt have much of a drag compared to bigger reels. Quote
baluga Posted April 27, 2012 Posted April 27, 2012 The Calcutta 100 is easier to palm and would be a good size for saltwater. I have the 50, 100 and the 200 and the 200 size is a chore palming it. The 100 is a lot better when palming. The 50 is excellent for palming but lack the capacity, I got spooled using a 20# braid, so I only use it on the harbors for topwater for Bonito. Quote
TxBankFisherman Posted April 27, 2012 Author Posted April 27, 2012 thanks for the help.... yeah I loved the 200 but really would wear you out... I found a deal on a 50 and bought it.... I know it doesnt hold near as much line so if I hook a red I'm in big trouble... I mostly fish for trout and I think it will do fine for that... The 100 sounds like a great deal also... may buy one of those later on.... Quote
Michael DiNardo Posted April 28, 2012 Posted April 28, 2012 I have a Curado 301 DSV, it is spooled with 50 lbs braid and I use it for light musky baits. It has a deep spool and holds mucho line. It seems very easy to palm to me . Mike Quote
