Kowen117 Posted April 25, 2012 Posted April 25, 2012 I have been lucky enough to find some quality fish; however, I have "missed" 10 out of my last 13 fish. Upon examination of my hooks after about my third missed fish I noticed it was bent out at a 45 degree angle I thought I was just using cappy hooks so I switched to 4/0 gamakatsu EWG hooks and same thing every time I set the hooks they just bend out 30-40 degrees by this point I was extremely frustrated so I brought out my only pack of owner hooks I had 3-4 missed fish later I checked my hooks and the same thing happened even with the owner hooks! What I am doing to bend these hooks? Has anybody else had this issue lately? Quote
outdoorsman110 Posted April 25, 2012 Posted April 25, 2012 My trokars do that.. I use Owner and Gamakatsu. That Jeremy Wade guy uses those and he tackles huge fish and they don't bend so I go by that. Quote
Deadeye-1 Posted April 25, 2012 Posted April 25, 2012 Are you using braid? reason I ask is that braid has little to no give and I know of one guy that has told me he has broken several hooks hard setting with braid. Some guys use a "shock" leader of mono or fluro to ease that. I believe that Power Pro even states to do that in their packages, or at least they used to. Quote
Kowen117 Posted April 25, 2012 Author Posted April 25, 2012 Yes I am using 50lb power pro on a heavy action rod, and I had thought that maybe I was simply setting the hook too hard. However, I have been using this setup for 2 years now, and I am just now having this issue. Plus these were mostly fish under 4lbs I didn't think that a fish that small should bend the hook. Quote
jkarol24 Posted April 25, 2012 Posted April 25, 2012 Have you been hitting the gym lately??? All kidding aside, i have had problems with any brand EWG hooks opening with braided line. Add that with your heavy action rod and that hook bends easier than you think. I have switched to the superline EWG variety and these seem to be less prone to the bending. Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted April 25, 2012 Global Moderator Posted April 25, 2012 Get some Gama EWG superline hooks, bet you don't bend any more hooks on the hookset. Quote
Super User Catt Posted April 25, 2012 Super User Posted April 25, 2012 I’ve never bent a hook on a fish, I use Mustad Denny Brauer straight shank round bend hooks Quote
mr.mallard Posted April 25, 2012 Posted April 25, 2012 look at the new super heavy cover gama flippin hook... cant bend that one bit Quote
Super User Jig Man Posted April 25, 2012 Super User Posted April 25, 2012 I have been through 5 different hooks with my A rigs. I have been having the same thing happen on the hookset with braid. I finally backed off on my drag and stopped it. I haven't found any other way. Quote
piscicidal Posted April 25, 2012 Posted April 25, 2012 What bluebasser said.... If you're using Gammy EWG, make sure you're using the ones with the "superline" designation. The wire size is thicker on the "superline EWG" than the plain "EWG" for this very reason...to prevent bending the hooks when using heavy braid. Or use a sturdy straight shank hook... Quote
Skeet22 Posted April 25, 2012 Posted April 25, 2012 Switch to a heavy flipping hook or superline EWG or go woit flouro on a MH set up. Easy fix Quote
flippin Dan Posted April 25, 2012 Posted April 25, 2012 Same problem last year and gama super line hooks solved it. Quote
