I have 0 spoons, jerkbaits, or finesse worms as far as I know. i have a LOT of crancks a lot of plastics and now i went out and bought 9 kvd and other spinsterhood. So yes I pretty much have a bunch of fishing tackle and Im not proficient on any of it. Im ok on senkos cause ive been practicing a LOT and I can cast a crank and retrieve, besides that, nothing else. I want to know what are must have in everybody's tackle box.?

when its enough?

whats a finnesse worm?

Never enough Juan.

The tackle addiction is the price we pay for the sport.

A finesse worm - usually 5-6" long, slimmer than other worms with a straight tail. Often fished on a shakey head.

Do you have a little of everything listed below?

What did I miss?

Plastics:

craws, worms, grubs, creatures, more worms, more senkos, the whole Rage Tail selection and so on

Hardbaits

Cranks: shallow, medium depth, and deep divers, rattling and no rattle

Suspending Jerkbaits

Topwater poppers, gitterbugs, torpedo s

spinnerbaits every cool color known to man

buzzbaits

At this point, why stop!! Now that you have started, and now that you have been subjected to this great sport, there is no turning back! Get used to these two words......... Bait Monkey!

You'll stop when you realize what works and what doesn't work.

Only downside is you'll just start buying more of what works.

I don't think you can have too much tackle...but in your case, I would stop buying lures for a while. You stated you're not proficient in anything yet. I would stop worrying about buying lures and start learning how to use the ones you have. You can have a million lures and if you don't know how to use them they're useless. Get out there and use the ones you have, learn when and how to use them.

You have a great start in your arsenal.....learn how to use those and then start buying out Bass Pro!!

what do you mean by that? buying more? Excuse me, English is not my first language.

I will love to buy from other vendors like the guy that sells plastics from here. those are cheap and look very good. But yes, I suck at this kind of fishing and I want to start catching bass and learning all these new techniques.

I meant---get proficient in the lures you have, then you should worry about expanding your collection. It was just a sarcastic remark.

When I first started out, I was a one-trick pony. That trick was jigs, and it is still a good trick, but there's always more to learn. Start out with your bottom-bouncing soft plastics and teach yourself what a strike feels like and work on timing your hookset. That will get you a long way. From there, I would learn to use that lipless crankbait (rat-l-trap), because there are a thousand ways to catch fish with it and it works all year long, just like the soft plastics. Learn that jerkbait, too. The BPS gold/red head in your box there is a good place to start. I have one like that and a gold/orange that is a good producer.

No such thing as too much... I have freezer bags STUFFED full of just about every type and color of soft plastic you can find... most of which I rarely/never use... I just can't help myself... the worst thing is when I shop online and want to get up to whatever price the "free shipping' sets in on that website, I hate spending the 5-8 bucks on shipping, so I end up spending an extra 30 on lures I didn't even need

i have to admit it my friends, I have relapsed. went to the local kmart looking for a vanish line and went out with a spiderwire stealth, a booyah spinner bait, a bag of culprit ribbon tails and a bag of yum hawk tail thingies ooohhh and a rapala same color of the shad rap I have but its bigger and thicker( for the really hungry fish)

$48 :( more spent, my wife doesnt know how much Im spending otherwise I would be single right as we speak.

worse thing is my rod is an ugly stick 6.5 foot medium action. it came with a crappy shakespeare reel. this thing when setting the hook, it goes 3 quarters back meaning, the handles moves back and it locks itself a lot late. Its a spinning reel.

I have a daiwa around that is a little older, its definitely a very good reel. so I swapped reels when I got back here today. I dont know how much time i can wait, i know i like abu garcia line of setups. ohhh God, that its going to cost me a lot.

You're already hooked my friend. You've got the fever. I suggest reading this forum about how to catch bass. There's a ton of great info here for beginners...start here... http://www.bassresource.com/how-to-fish/

Read everything. Then go through the rest of the articles in the articles section. It will take you a long time, but learning this takes a long time. You're gonna go out and catch nothing, many times, before it all starts to click and you see some quality results. You need experience. Thats the best teacher. Most importantly...have fun!

Oh, and if you're really lucky, your wife will take an interest in it and you can do this together!

I've got a giant selection of soft plastics, spinner baits, buzzbaits and swimbaits. Yet I catch all my fish on a very few lures. Not that the others wont catch fish, but youll do much better to focus on a few lures than try and juggle 15 diff types. If your into cranks get a shallow a mid and a deep and fish them 90% of the time. If your into plastics then fish those few plastics all the time untill you figgure them out.

I believe if you get to know one type of lure well enough you will be able to take it and adjust your fishing style/ fishing location, and catch fish with that lure 90% of the time.

To me knowing a lure well is much better than having a box full of stuff that is alien to you.

Yep, you have got the fever and there is no cure! It is pretty easy to get proficient with your tackle, the problem you have is you are all over the place but at least you have the bases covered. What you need to do is discover what lure you like to use most and start there, once you begin to catch fish you will quickly learn where the lure is working and under what kind of conditions and before you know it you learned to use a lure and then it is on to the next thing. I think a good place for you to start would be spinnerbaits, these will work deep or shallow and they catch fish plus you can burn them or slow roll them or work them somewhere in between. Get good with that bait and transfer what you learned from that into cranks or jigs or whatever else you want, the choice is yours but you need to get used to one bait at a time.

Posted

Start out with a few of each style bait - jig, spinnerbait, crank, t-rig bait, topwater, jerkbait, stick bait, and ribbontail worm. From there learn when and where to throw these baits. As you progress, continue to discover new techniques and baits, but in the beginning, keep it simple.

I always like to tell beginners to study bass patterns and once you feel confident of where they are at, then experiment with how to get them to bite.

I would suggest picking up some NorthStar Custom Baits jigs and spinnerbaits to add to your collection. Start out with a few swim jigs, premier jigs, and hidden weight spinnerbaits - I always have a few tied on and even more in the boat.

As far as cranks go, I would reccomend picking up some Rapala DT's...great bait and you can find them on sale for $5.

You can catch fish with any bait but some just work better then others. Thats not to say that same style or color of crank is always the best on every body of water. It might be super good at one place but the next spot you might not be able to buy a bite with it. I am not saying buying one of every thing but hang out around here and read what people claim works or do some research and then decide for your self if that is a bait that might produce for you. For me I like to know how a lure feels and performs at all times. I want to know at all times what is happening with that bait while its under water. If you constantly changing baits every 10 minutes cause you didnt get a bite it might be hard to get in tune with a certin lure. Spend some time with 1 bait you think will be a good producer and really try to master how that bait acts and feels. You can have every bait in the world but in the end its only a handfull of them you keep going back to time after time the rest are just there for looks.
