outdoorsman110 Posted April 23, 2012 Posted April 23, 2012 I have a Pflueger president ( I've had many but they are all mine, this one is a gift for someone ) I don't wanna go overboard on the rod price. I spent enough sending it in to get custom bearings and gears. I want a rod that's under 60 dollars that's reliable. I'm leaning towards the Sellus. It seems to have fairly good reviews and I picked one up for myself for my baitcaster but I've never looked at the spinning rod Sellus. Is it any good? I want it to match. It has to match. Any ideas? NOTE: The gift is for my girl so, it has to match She doesn't fish anything technique specific, random lures, torpedos, drop shots, tubes, cranks, spinnerbaits. The Sellus seem pretty good for an all around rod, this'll be her first really nice setup. She had my old Pflueger Arbor but that's it. This is her first real combo. She isn't allowed on Bass Resource till after her birthday haha, she'd see this if I told her not to. Thanks guys. Quote
Packard Posted April 23, 2012 Posted April 23, 2012 Why'd you get custom bearings and gears for a President? Maybe spend $10 more over your budget for a powell diesel? Quote
outdoorsman110 Posted April 23, 2012 Author Posted April 23, 2012 Why'd you get custom bearings and gears for a President? Maybe spend $10 more over your budget for a powell diesel? The guy at my local tackle shop recommended it because the reel is gonna be fished in brackish water, these bearings and gears can withstand full on saltwater now. He replaced all the parts for me to make it basically a saltwater reel for about 30$ How are the Powell diesel spinning rods? Quote
Super User LgMouthGambler Posted April 23, 2012 Super User Posted April 23, 2012 Get a Berkley Lightning Shock Rod. Tough as hell, and very good price. I own 4 of them, but for baitcasters, they hold up just as good as rods that are over $100. Quote

I would say the same thing but it won't match the president, then again the sellus is white and matches worse Quote

outdoorsman110 Posted April 23, 2012 Author Posted April 23, 2012 Do they still make cherrywoods? That might match? I'm half colorblind, turns out I thought the president was grey for the longest time.. It's teal blue. Quote
Super User tomustang Posted April 23, 2012 Super User Posted April 23, 2012 Well there is also the Abu Garcia Conolon or a Cherrywood, the dark red color would match the president thumb handle Quote

Go to your nearest walmart, their on clearance, well all three conolons/cherrywoods/lightnings are, still might have a bunch left, if not check out some other walmarts Quote
Ima Bass Ninja Posted April 23, 2012 Posted April 23, 2012 You can buy the president combo for 79.99 at Walmart. Then you have the reel with matching rod and you have an extra reel. Other than that maybe the academy h2o xpress rod? it's a blue rod Quote
outdoorsman110 Posted April 23, 2012 Author Posted April 23, 2012 I think I might just go with the Sellus.. It may not match but it does look kinda nice.. It's simple, there isn't much going on. I'll have to see about the cherrywoods at Walmart. Thanks guys. Quote
Diggy Posted April 24, 2012 Posted April 24, 2012 My boy has his mounted on a browning hi power. Looks great. You may want to check bps, cabellas, gander, academy, for their lines. Black colored rods will match easiest as you know Quote

Globadoc Posted April 24, 2012 Posted April 24, 2012 Choosing rods by color is interesting. Aaah, the things we do for our ladies. At any rate, your local Gander Mountain has the Quantum Response series, which is black with blue accents. This week, it is on sale for $49.99. I have not used the spinning rod, but I have the microguide casting rod and it seems pretty decent for a $50 rod. Similarly, Dick's has the TecSpec spinning rods for $60 (but there is ALWAYS a $10 off coupon somewhere), and it is smoke grey. The TecSpec Elite is $20 higher but it is blue. 1 Quote

crankbait2009 Posted April 24, 2012 Posted April 24, 2012 I actually bough the President combo at Wallyworld for $80. Everything matches and it is a heck of a reel for the price......I was referred to this combo by a friend.....glad I got it...... Quote
Diggy Posted April 25, 2012 Posted April 25, 2012 The 60 dollar tecspec will probably match best, just watch the finish for flaking Quote
Crookedneck Posted April 25, 2012 Posted April 25, 2012 Take a look at Mudhole. Get a blank, the components, and and any one of about 500 thread colors. Build her a matching rod. Not only will it match but it will be made by you. Which will make her happier because you took the time to build it. Then you can put a custom decal on it with her name. Just my 2 cents. If you need some help PM me I will gladly help out. Mike Quote
