TidePride37 Posted April 23, 2012 Posted April 23, 2012 I am about to buy the smoke spinning rod and i was considering both the 6'6 and the 7'0 rod. I am looking to use the rod for light crankbaits and soft plastics. Any suggestions? Quote
Delaware Valley Tackle Posted April 23, 2012 Posted April 23, 2012 This comes down to personal preference. A longer rod will cast a little further with all else being equal but accuracy trumps distance 90% of the time IMO. 7' is my default rod length and then go longer or shorter for certain applications. Basically shorter for tip down (jerk bait, topwater) and close casting (spinnerbait) and longer for casting distance (deep cranks) and moving line quickly (flipping). Quote
BrianSnat Posted April 24, 2012 Posted April 24, 2012 Of my 8 bassin' spinning rods, 7 of them are 6' 6" and one is 7'. I mainly went with the 6' 6" because the hallway where I store them is 6' 8" high and because they also don't hit me in the back of the head when I'm driving the car like the 7 footer does. I actually prefer the 6' 6" size to the 7 footer because I'm a little more accurate with them. It could be because I'm more used to the size, but I can put my lures on target more consistently with the slightly shorter rod. Quote
Super User ww2farmer Posted April 25, 2012 Super User Posted April 25, 2012 If I could only have one, it would be the 6'6", more versitile IMHO. Quote
jerzeeD Posted April 26, 2012 Posted April 26, 2012 Personnal preference is the biggest thing. A 7' footer allows for longer casts, the 6' 6" will be slightly easier for horsing big LM's in covered in vegetation. Not really a huge difference in 6" though in regards to performance. Quote
Osprey39 Posted April 26, 2012 Posted April 26, 2012 I prefer shorter rods because I'm not a tall guy. I'm about 5'10" on a good day and with a baitcaster it's much easier for me to pitch with shorter rods. With spinning rods, I just find the 6'6" length easier to handle, especially in tight quarters. The spinning rod I use most often is 7'0" and that's my only beef about it, I wish it was 6 inches shorter. Anyway, as someone said earlier and you can probably tell from the replies you have gotten, it's pretty much personal preference. Quote

Yep, given the fact both rods are identical except for length, shorter rods give more leverage. I prefer shorter rods because I'm not a tall guy. I'm about 5'10" on a good day 5'10 is giant......I'm 5'4 135# on a good day and for the majority of my fishing I prefer a minimum length 7' spinning rod. One of my determining factors is the strength of the wind, for me it's much easier to throw a 7 footer in heavy wind as compared to 7'6 or 8. Even using the same identical rod and same lure, just a different length I see no measurable difference in distance, in fact I feel my 7' may cast further than my 8 footer. Boils down to what you are comfortable with. Quote
