Clash City Rocker Posted April 23, 2012 Posted April 23, 2012 Hey guys, I was browsing at dick's on Saturday and picked up a pack of these in Houdini. I didn't have any luck with them, but I was swimming them Texas rigged on a keel weighted hook. How do you guys fish these? Quote
Trickerie Posted April 23, 2012 Posted April 23, 2012 Keel weighted Texposed. I like the smoke/shad color myself Quote
rbreedi1 Posted April 23, 2012 Posted April 23, 2012 Caught several nice fish on these lately in watermelon rigged on weighted swimbait hooks. Quote

Trickerie Posted April 23, 2012 Posted April 23, 2012 My usual retrieve is a steady retrieve, slight speed up, then stop so the bait swims nose first down to the bottom. IMO this imitates a fish diving to grab something off the bottom to feed on. I vary my retrieve depending on what I find works, but this is usually how I start using this bait. Quote
Super User BASSclary Posted April 23, 2012 Super User Posted April 23, 2012 I too enjoy the smoke shad color in the swimming fluke. Usually a moderate retrieve with some small sweeps of the rod involved. This will speed it up for a second then let it die for a second, then back to regular, then repeat. Quote
Super User J Francho Posted April 23, 2012 Super User Posted April 23, 2012 I fish big flukes nose hooked on a 2/0 Gamakatsu Wide Gap Finesse hook with a very fast, popping retrieve, almost like a topwater. Quote
Nodda4me Posted April 23, 2012 Posted April 23, 2012 I tried the Zoom Super Flukes in White Pearl, Arkansas Shiner and Watermelon Seed. Casted a whole day of them without a bite. Casted them a few times while on the boat without a bite too. 4/0 EWG Gamakatsu, black, Texas rigged, sometimes weighted but mostly weightless. I gave up on them. I might try them some other day in the future but for right now I'll be using my new jigs! Quote
Super User BASSclary Posted April 23, 2012 Super User Posted April 23, 2012 I fish big flukes nose hooked on a 2/0 Gamakatsu Wide Gap Finesse hook with a very fast, popping retrieve, almost like a topwater. I like to do this in open water as well. But there's a lot of vegitation down where I fish alot so I opt for a texas rig. I there a way to rig it more weedless with still a nose hook? I tried the weedless hooks, just not a match for the nasty weeds. Quote
Super User J Francho Posted April 23, 2012 Super User Posted April 23, 2012 I just don't bother with a fluke in those conditions. Wrong bait for the situation, something like a jig, or T-rigged worm/creature is a better choice. Quote
Super User smalljaw67 Posted April 23, 2012 Super User Posted April 23, 2012 I like regular soft jerkbaits weightless, but the swimmin variety is awesome on a scrounger or a chatter style bait. Quote
Skeet22 Posted April 23, 2012 Posted April 23, 2012 Swimming a fluke or any small soft body swimbait through vegetation is a deadly technique when the shad bite is hot as well as swimming a jig. I use a Musted powerlock 1/16 oz weighted swimbait hook. Quote

Franch, you know I hate you, but I can't stand to see you out on the water without the best gear for the fluke : ) I fish it exactly like you and I used to use/defend the Gammy Weedless Finesse Widegap to anyone that questioned me about it's hooking capabilities. That is, until I found this....http://www.***.com/Gamakatsu_Weedless_DropSplit_Shot_Hooks/descpage-GWD.html You hook the fish SOOOO much better, and that silly lil' weedguard actually does a great job at keeping the snaggy stuff off. Good luck flukin', my man! Quote

Once fish get off of a frog, I'll throw a fluke in the same areas and drag it ontop of the grass and let it fall in the holes. Catches alot of fish and some big ones too! Quote
The American Posted April 24, 2012 Posted April 24, 2012 Put it on an underspin jighead, and let it fall around submerged brushpiles or paralell to steep dropoffs, that's where the swimming flukes really shine. Quote
JaxBasser Posted April 25, 2012 Posted April 25, 2012 I haven't used the Swimmin Fluke but I've been catching tons of fish on the Cane Thumper which is a really similar bait. I've been using it with an Owner Weighted Beast 6/0 and the big fish have been crushing it. Most of my bites come on the initial fall or the fall when I stop it in the middle of the retrieve. Quote
