Super User smalljaw67 Posted April 22, 2012 Super User Posted April 22, 2012 Whether it is for Christmas or your birthday or some other occasion, most of us recieved a lure from someone who is clueless about fishing and if you haven't then you probably ended up with a cheap lure when first getting into the sport. Besides how we end up with cheap lures the point is we all have or had at least one but I was wondering if there was one of those lures that actually caught fish? I got 2 poppers from a friend than knew I fished a lot, he picked them up at a local show his church had sposored and of course I thinked my friend and made a big deal over these lures when in actuallity they were just cheap lures probably made for a beginner kit or something similar but I put them in my box anyway. Well out on the river a few weeks after getting those I saw fish busting the surface and since I was in the jon boat on a float trip I only had a small assortment of lures with those cheap poppers as the only topwater baits, well I tied one on, it was all black with a red mouth about 1/4oz and the fish were killing it until the hooks broke but I still caught a lot of fish on it, probably the fact that the fish were just hitting anything on top. Well I decided to keep those lures after that trip so I put some new triple grip hooks on it and the next trip to a local lake made me realize there was something with this lure, we were on the water for 2 hours without a strike and so I put the black popper on again and the first cast got me a small keeper size fish and then a few casts later another and then another after that. I ended up catch 15 fish all on that popper, my friend with me got 1, I even tried the second popper I got with the first one and not a single fish, and ever since it has been an incredible bait, I have touched upp the paint and replaced the hokks a few time but I still have it. The triple grip hooks I put on the bait were the first year mustad came out with them so that tells you how long I have it and it still gets bit. Quote
Super User deep Posted April 23, 2012 Super User Posted April 23, 2012 A 1/8 oz rebel pop-r I rescued from the dollar bin in Walmarts. It isn't a no-name, but it certainly was cheap... Quote
mrmacwvu1 Posted April 23, 2012 Posted April 23, 2012 blaze minnow if is similar to the original floating rapala but with better action river smallies kill it i bought 20 of them just to keep as extras Quote
WookieeJedi Posted April 23, 2012 Posted April 23, 2012 I got a couple of shallow crankbaits out of a bin at BPS that turned out to be murder. One white with black back, and the other gold with a brown back. They were $1 each. Quote
Super User bigbill Posted April 23, 2012 Super User Posted April 23, 2012 One of those cheap "producers" labeled lures its an off the wall orange colored spook in the sale bin. I think it was 99 cents or $1,.99 i don't remember. I used it one day and caugh many bass on it. There was an online bait shop in FLA. who had all the bigger saltwater spooks i purchased what i could but he went out of business soon after. I like the bigger spooks. Quote
Super User tomustang Posted April 23, 2012 Super User Posted April 23, 2012 I wouldnt put cheap and no-name in the same category, when cheap is implied it usually means discounted therefore it was at one time a full priced lure. Quote
Super User Catt Posted April 23, 2012 Super User Posted April 23, 2012 Wal-Mart Renegade 6” hook tail worm black with silver glitter Quote
Diggy Posted April 23, 2012 Posted April 23, 2012 1.96 conqueror jigs from walmart in blue/black. I put a pit boss on it and Ive caught fish on it both times Ive used it. Ive thrown the same color booyah jig and only caught 2 fish throwing it 100s of times. Ive also used their(conqueror) premade carolina rig with a luck e strike lizard(walmart kit) and caught a 3.5lb fish Quote
Super User SirSnookalot Posted April 23, 2012 Super User Posted April 23, 2012 I've beaten to the punch.........the @2.99 Blaze Minnow. To my chagrin, they have been discontinued and I can't find them anymore. Quote
Super User ww2farmer Posted April 23, 2012 Super User Posted April 23, 2012 One of the biggest and best "no-name" producers for me has been the "genaric" Strike King spinner baits sold for $4 at Dicks Sporting goods. Not the el cheapo ones with a barrel swivel and crap skirts that are $1-$2.These are the same exact bait BPS sells as there exclusive KVD series spinner baits for $7+. The difference is the Dicks versions have fewer sizes (only 1/4 and 3/8) fewer colors, and fewer blade configuration choices, and the don't come in a fancy package, just a small tag clipped to the wire and hung on peg in the spinner bait isle.. They come with a trailer hook, and the "magic tail" skirt that the KVD and Premier Plus both have. They have been very good baits for me over the last 5-6 years. Quote
Super User MCS Posted April 23, 2012 Super User Posted April 23, 2012 Got some store brand buzz baits from Walmart about two weeks ago for a dollar each, they don't run super great, but they sure do get some fish. green/chart is the killer color over the white. Quote
Bass Junkie Posted April 23, 2012 Posted April 23, 2012 Lucky Craft..... Small company from over China/Japan way.... I think they're made in the same factory as those Matzuos, but I ain't sure.... Quote

guitarkid Posted April 25, 2012 Posted April 25, 2012 4" and 6" renegade worms. plus the smell is pretty nice. -gk Quote
wisconsin heat Posted April 26, 2012 Posted April 26, 2012 The conquer minnow at walmart for $1.96. I bought one cuz i liked the look of it. I can tell you i LOVE the action too. They slowly float, but my walmart now sells suspen strips and kvd trebles so after some tweaking, you can get a great bait for like 4 bucks Quote
von Posted April 26, 2012 Posted April 26, 2012 A buddy gave me a knock off Jackall Aragon crank that actually runs straight and catches fish! Quote
Stasher1 Posted April 26, 2012 Posted April 26, 2012 4" and 6" renegade worms. plus the smell is pretty nice. -gk x2 I've also had pretty good luck with the BPS version of the same worm. I'm almost embarrassed to be seen carrying 6-8 bags of them to the register, but they're dirt cheap and the stupid things catch fish. Quote
