Kabar Posted April 20, 2012 Posted April 20, 2012 What are application for those rods, which is better with i.e t-rig, and which with spinnerbaits..etc ..and why. Just trying to learn, can you folks explain me why I should use Medioum or MHeavy? ( Have both Ct.Croix Avid.....have Fenwick for crankbaits as well). I fish for bass, pike and if I will have opportunity for walleye (never did). My biggest fish was 6 lb pike So you know that I'm not in area with huge fishes. Thank you. Quote

Yes, but sometimes the spec is good on both for a given bait. St.Croix MF : Line Weight: 10-17 lbs. Lure Weight: 1/4 - 5/8 oz. St. MHF : Line Weight: 12-20 lbs. Lure Weight: 3/8 - 1 oz. So which is better in example for 1/2 oz spinnerbait?..and why? Quote

And in what type of cover, if any? These are al important questions when deciding on a rod for any technique. Quote
StinkyBass Posted April 20, 2012 Posted April 20, 2012 i use medium heavy fast action rods because they have the backbone to drill a bass and cross its eyes from far out and deep in cover. i swear by the fast action (even "extra fast" action). i can feel the tiniest bump on the end of my line. i primarily use my shimano compre with a fast action for jigs, worming and for spinner baits. i have a medium heavy rod (abu garcia vendetta) that doesnt have a fast action that i use for crankin. with a crank bait, i feel that i dont need such a fast action because if a bass even so much as smells my crankbait, the treble hooks finish it off and the fight is on. good example of why i use meduim heavy: last year i was fishing off a dock at my hometown reservoir and the bass were especially deep that day. i forgot my MH rod and only had my Meduim rod. well as luck would have it, i got into a big bass. maybe 5-6 lbs, hard to say really. she was deep and she was far out. when i went to set the hook, the rod just wobbled and i never got a good hook set. despite repeated jerks (trying to get a good hook set) she jumped out of the water and spit the bait out. lost her! the next day i returned hoping for another big bass, sure enough, another deep far out bass. this one weighted 6.5lbs! i know this because i brought her in. i had the same type line on, and even the same lure as the day before. the difference was the medium heavy rod! i hope i didnt type too much here, but i reeeeeeeeeeeally like the medium heavy fast action rods. go 7ft if you can, give you more leverage when you rear back to set the hook! The cover of what your fishing would help decide, if I was fishing in any resistance I would choose a heavier rod to help pull through it. Quote
