Thoughts On Power

I was wondering what power you prefer in a rod, and the major differences, in general between the medium and medium heavy. If you are fishing for most fish out there, at some point, which power do you think is better? I mostly fish for Bass, but will be going for walleye sometimes and pike others.

Is Medium heavy too much?

The only rod I own that is Medium or less is my single spinning rod. Everything else is medium heavy or heavy. With most of those being heavy. A lot of it is going to depend on where you're fishing. We deal with a lot of grass down here, no room for the lighter rods. Especially if you start targeting the larger Peacocks. Those things can put an absolute whipping on you if you come to play with a fairy wand.

Out in open water, it can be darn fun to catch bass on light gear though. I just don't mess with it given the amount of vegetation we deal with down here for the most part.

As far as other species go, the other stuff I target eats bass tackle for lunch. Can't really give a fair comparison to large pelagic fish or some of the reef dwellers.

It isn't a yes or no answer and is it spinning or casting. If you are fishing heavy slop mh may be the way to go, open water you can fish lighter. I have med rods that are 6-12 line weight and some 8-17, there is a difference. In open water there aren't many bass, walleye, pike I can't land with med 8-17 spinning set up

A MH/F is probably the most versatile rod for bass fishing. A little over kill for walleye in open water but appreciated in getting big fish out of cover.

Awesome - thanks all. I am looking into other rods too. I want to expand my collection and make my options as diverse as possible. I think MH is what I will go with!

I like to think I use a healthy combonation. I pick my rod based on technique, instead of cover, however I dont live in Florida with the thickest of thick. The only time I go below a M for anything is on spinning, and in open water. However, I pick the best rod for how I fish the technique when It comes to all my casting gear. Like my fluke rod is a 6'8" M/XF. I like it because It throws them a mile and the way it fishes a fluke is killer. However, IMO anything M and above has enough power to horse them out of cover, and im using 10# line in some nasty stuff. It's more about your technique on fighting the fish IMO.

However if your in absolutely nasty stuff like punching, then i think it makes more sense to use a broom stick, because you have to get em out immediately.

Medium or Medium Heavy will both work for your location.

Besides the species, your surroundings will affect what to use.

Medium Heavy will get you through most situations but to do it all and cover all conditions having all powers for different situations will be the deal. But if your just looking for something for basic spinnerbaiting,tx rig etc a MH will do fine.
