Best Lures For Small Lake With Weeds And Algae

I fish a lake pretty often that has tons of grass, but with it comes toms of algae. Almost every cast I am removing moss from the lure. I have had some success with flukes and senko's, but I really can't find anything else to produce that well. I have tried a frog from time to time without much luck. Lots of big bass in this lake. I have caught a 5, 6, and 7 pounder out of here in the last yr.

Any lure or unique presentation suggestions?

Casting a dropshot can work well. Keeps the bait above the moss and not much grass algae accumulates on those small drop shot cylinder weights.

Couple tips to try.

Plastics with nail weights inserted inside them. Make sure to cover the eye of the hook with plastic best you can. Cut the tag as close as possible so it don't collect algae.

Crank baits with the middle front hook clipped off.

Jigs with a bullet shape head, and a vertical line tie. The line tie is the key. Hop it instead of dragging it. I prefer the Uncle josh "grass stalker" jig.

Toads (stanley ribbits) to buzz along the top, or hollow body frog is what I would use.

I used to fish a small pond like that with tons of weeds/moss.... A chatterbait-small size- worked well... but had to have the trailer hook or missed most of the fish.... X2 on the dropshot... maybe try a trick worm with it....

one of the best days I had on that pond though was on a rattlin rap.. I had to burn it to keep it out of the moss... and the fish just tore it up... it's worked well on most ponds I've been to...

As far as frogs.. love the Stanley Ribbit... and if the grass isn't too bad on top, on those cloudy/overcast days a Zara spook is hard to beat....as well as a buzzbait...

Try some small paddle tails along with the flukes. They come through weeds/moss pretty well.

^{Trick worms. Weighted and un weighted walked on the top or sunk and dead sticked,. Tough to beat black or junebug. I fish places like this a lot and the GYCB 6.5 kuttail un weighted is just killer too. If the scum is that bad and you use a texas rig go very light like a 1/16-1/8 weight UNPEGGED. A pegged weight or a shakey head will dig the nose into the stuff. I second stanley ribbits. Cover all the shallows and the holes in the scum if it is floating. Any trees or docks be sure to skip it well under and into them especially on sunny days. If you use cranks then attempt to run a depth along drop offs or structure that is very close to hitting bottom but not quite. Easier said then done but sometimes its a matter of control like holding your rod tip high or just making very short casts as longer casts tend to run the bait deeper. Use your rod to twitch and pause the cranks and make them change direction since they will obviously not be hitting objects on the bottom. Also rattle traps,the obvious,any clear water areas once again try to keep it in that magic zone just off bottom. If you feel it even begin to touch scum or weeds quickly snap your rod tip up and rip it hard. Again you may have to concentrate on very short casts or dowsize to a 1/4 oz.This is a lot better on braid line. Don't hesitate to bust out the spinnerbaits on a windy day. I prefer a col/willow combo with large blades and once again slow roll it near the bottom in that magic zone. It may take a while but once you learn exactly how deep and where the depth changes are this can be killer. You can tell I fish this crap a lot lol. As far as topwaters try poppers on calm days as you can keep them in one spot longer or even cast them into pockets in the junk and work them in place.}

I fish super nasty ponds with fat bass all the time.

As long as there is no slime on top that will foul your bait instantly I will try a square bill. My favorite is the KVD 2.5 and the 1.5. I try to just tick the tops of the grass or stop and go. With braided line a slow rod and practice you can go through any thing and come out clean. Also if you can try a Red Eye Shad. If its really bad and you keep getting weeds remove the back hook not the front in my experience. Finally Huddleston Grass Minnow and 6" weedless. The Grass Minnow just simply catches and lots of them (at least for me). These baits all catch tons and tons of fish for me.
