ptomacbass Posted November 16, 2009 Posted November 16, 2009 Which type of hooks do you guys refer for 1/2 to 1 ounce football jigs, extra wide gap, or round bend? I have been tying on jigheads with extra widegap Gamakatsu hooks, and I rarely have fish rip off of or throw the jig. With the old jigheads I tied on that had a round bend hook, fish would throw the jig more. The only problem is that the company that makes the jigheads has terrible quality control, many times the weedguards will fall out, the jigheads, will be partially painted, or the hooks will be crooked. The thing is, I can't find the hook I would need for these jigs, and I can't find a mold that would accept them. Do you guys also seem to find that fish throw heavy football jigs with round bend hooks more than they do heavy football jigs with extra wide gap hooks? Quote
Gangley Posted November 16, 2009 Posted November 16, 2009 as far as quality control, if the problems within a jig manufacturer are that blatantly obvious, you need to move to another manufacturer regardless of how much you prefer their hooks. Fishing is about consistancy, and you cant fish consistantly with a jig that performs different everytime you tie a new one on. From what I have read, Gamakatsu is the best hook for jigs, with Mustad right on their heels. This is not spoken from experiance though, only from what I have read from others in the past. The jigs I use are mostly EWG hooks. The football head jig i have on my rod right now is a KaRu football head jig with an EWG hook. I have both KaRu and Omega jigs and I havent had any problems with either at this time, and both Mustads and Gamakatsu's are used in the jig hook lineup. Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted November 17, 2009 Super User Posted November 17, 2009 EWG all the way. X2 For a custom jig at a good price, check our GMAN jigs. If he doesn't have what you on his website, he will custom build them for you. 8-) Quote
Siebert Outdoors Posted November 17, 2009 Posted November 17, 2009 IMO, it doesn't matter. I've fished both a lot and I don't have a problem with the hook getting thrown on either style. The only time I do is my fault with a dull hook or poor set. Once the hook is buttoned I cant remember the last time I had a fish throw one. Quote
