C-111 Aerojet Canal

Has anyone fished the C-111 canal lately? Whats the biggest bass anyone has caught out there and when? I am planning a trip there and am trying to see if it is worth walking the bank at C-111

I have not fished there, but I am also interested in the canal. There are a couple other canals that border the Everglades Park north and west of the C-111 that have primitive boat ramps. When I finally get down there, I will check them out. That C-111 probably has everything from bream - bass - snook - tarpon.

I fished there in September. Did ok. The 8lber in my pic is from that location. Don't know how it would be to walk the banks there, but in a boat it is about a six mile stretch end to end. Nothing special IMO.

FYI......I went to Aerojet canal today for the first time in a long time and realized its been closed off. Coming off of US1 both sides of the canal are gated off. Does anyone know whats going on with this?

Wow, If I knew that was the canal you were referring too I could have saved you the trip. It was like this last year when I was down in that area.

I have fished bass there a bunch of times over the last 25 years. Usually it is not very good, but it's something to do on a windy day. I have snorkeled there, but lately there are more gators than ever. I have not seen any oscars or peacocks in there. Just brim, gars, and a few bass. Occasionally a 4-5 pounder.

I thought it would be good after being closed while they built the new highway but I got in there and caught nothing. I don't see why they closed the original boat ramp on the N side, and built a ramp on the S. side? Then a month or two after it opens, they closed it to rebuild the saltwater dam. I do not see why people cannot fish there while they build the d**n dam? And why can they not open a ramp on the salt side too?

They took out two ramps after promising not to, to build the road! (Long Sound ramp and the county line ramp)

Walking the banks is sweltering hot and buggy and the fish see you coming. Also, you will have a hard time presenting your lure from way above the water, casting out over the weedy edges to the deep and pulling in vs. in a boat, casting along the edges of the weed drop off. Bicycling along and fishing the culvert ponds you will see the gar I'm telling about and pee-wee bass.

The problem here is that too many redneck bass fishermen think the bass are good to eat. Really the bass are loaded with mercury and toxins and they taste swampy and mushy. If more people released their catches here we'd see some bigger fish.

They should have the ramp open when the d**n dam is fixed, next year? The first people there when it opens will keep all the big fish, and after that, it's too bad for the rest of us!

You can get in there now by going to the "closed ramp" area and dropping in a small boat or canoe off the steep bank. Also, you can put in on the road to the Everglades at a small turn-off and run to the end of that side, and portage over to the big canal side. Both ways are not worth the effort; I've tried.

If your family is visiting, it is a good place to show them some birds and gators on windy day in the winter.

,ive entered a lil bit thru this canal coming on my boat from the bay,ive seen tarpon,snook, manatee's,barracuda & snappers.at the tip this canal its saltwater but have never ventured in...how deep like under the bridge on US1??.

I'm in Palm Beach County and the canals are pretty high banked here, guessing 6-10 or maybe a little more. Quite true in summer it's hot everyplace and the bugs can be bad, but not this time of year. It's comfortable, the fish are biting and I've become to prefer the higher banked canals, I feel a bit security between me and the gators and snakes, watch out for the ants. I fish 2 canals the majority of time, each about 3/8 of mile long, being that high up fish do not get spooked. I've yet to be skunked and have caught fish up to about 8# and fish daily. There are plenty of fish in these canals, just a matter of getting hit or not.

I never knew what easy fishing was until I started fishing Florida canals, literally shooting fish in a barrel compared to a larger lake.

south florida & possibly all of florida is a fishermens paradise .i have fished canals,creeks n lakes from broward to the keys..ive seen up to a 5ft grass carp in a canal that was about 4ft deep.
