so i took the spool out and spool tensionknob off and cleaned/lubed it really well. when i put it all back together, the lure falls way too fast, which will cause backlash if i cast it. The spool tension knob is even as tight as it will go, but it still comes out too fast. i didn't take any small parts out, don't know what oculd be the cause. I put it back just like I always do. Maybe the spring is in upside down?

Check under the cap for the spool tensioner. The small fiber and/or brass spacer washers may have fallen out. If so, Shimano will send them to you. In the meantime, cut two small pieces of plastic that will fit inside the cap. Insert one at a time and see if that helps. If the washers are not missing, you have a different problem.

This is why I turn a video camera on my reel when I take it apart, that way if I screw up I'll know how to fix it.

i took out spool/brakes and lubed them with reel butter, lubed the levelwind. i took off the cast control knob, took only the spring out and drop a dot of lube in there. i have a magnetic bowl i put all parts in, didn't take any small pieces out. i unfortunately was lazy and didn't put this rod and reel where it belonged and my weedeater leaked gas/oil down on the reel so i had to give it a good cleaning. won't make that mistake again. i'll make sure the spring is in there right. this is the first reel i've seen where there is a spring in the cast control knob. none of my calcutta's have this.

If gas and oil leaked into your reel you need to tear it down or have it done. I get $18 ea plus postage and parts if needed. Members get 10% off labor and after market parts. Did the cast control work immediately before disassembly? You may have deeper contamination.

don't think so, it looked like it just got on the spool, just cleaned the rest to do it. it worked perfectly before, i may have put the spring in wrong. i'll check and touch base later. you've done work for me before DVT and was very impressed.

That'll do it every time. Those springs can look in, but be improperly seated. Had it happen to me a few times. Glad you got it working.
