Hey guys, looking to visit Leech lake this year around mid June. Wondering if there are any other waters in Northern Minn that anyone would care to recommend. I respect the idea of not giving me your favorite spots and lakes. Also really enjoy pond fishing too!

Honestly it's hard to top Leech. It's got every species, beautiful shorelines, and some crazy nice resorts. The fishing on Leech can be epic as there are trophies in every category (monster Muskie, come on). Like if I was making a list of lakes worth traveling MN to fish Leech would likely be likely #1. We have tons of Great Lakes, but Leech is that great mix of diversity and beauty. Can you tell I love that lake? It's something special.

There are so many great lakes up that way. Lake Winni is one. If you go through Outing hit Roosevelt lake, great fishing!

Wow. I remember reading this thread years ago when I had just started fishing. It was neat because I fished Demontreville alot and the kid said he had a 7 outta there. Never did get the picture though, lol. Anywas, glad to see an active board of MN bass anglers. I started fishing a tournament curcuit last year and had a lot of fun. Favorite tourney was on the Whitefish Chain by Brainard. This year, they've decided to hit Minnetonka to both open and close the season. I've been doing a lot of research on it, and I've never really had a chance to fish much around the spawning season. So, does anyone have any info they'd be willing to share about Minnetonka during the spawn? It'll be June 9th, so I'm guessing most of the big girls will be off of the beds by then. but what do I know? Seriously, any info would be much appreciated. I hope to get out at least a couple times prior, but my father-in-law/boat owner doesn't like the "big lakes" So I'm aftaid we'll be spending a lot of time on Bald Eagle and Centerville again. Not bad lakes, don't get me wrong, but they don't come close to the allure of the big clear lakes with such beautiful fish as Minnie, Thanks in advance for the advice. I hope to be sharing a lot of info in the months to come.

P.S. Who else is as stoked as I am for the May 9th opener? If you ask me, it's long overdue, but better late than never, right?

I think we're all pumped for the Opener. I've been getting out here and there lately with the nice weather, running around with Crappie jigs and some ultralite rigs. This is a great time of year to chase crappies around, killing time until the opener. Always get the occasional LMB that hammers the crappie tube.

I have ZERO tips for Minnetonka. I never fish it. Too much traffic for me and my little 14 foot tiller.

I live about 3 miles from minnetonka and refuse to fish it.  Go to a ramp and weekend and youll be waiting in a nice line to put in and good luck finding parking.  If you have anything smaller (kayak, jon etc) i wouldnt waste your time.  Youll get blown over by 20 boats flying across the lake.  Last year they had no wake for a while in spring that kept the big guys off but fishing was slowwww with the high waters.  I did a little research and found some awesome smaller lakes in carver that are great for bass and its a much more enjoyable time.

I have fished Tonka plenty in years past, both for recreation and competition.  I have a 19' bass boat and will not go there anymore unless I have to....and I haven't had to in many years now.   I miss the excellent fishing but I don't want to deal with the traffic out there anymore.  The channels and yachts just tick me off.

Anyone get out this weekend? I hit some metro lakes Saturday & Sunday with light tackle and crappie minnows and ended up pulling in some LMB. They were fat and ready for the spawn. I bet the spawn's going to happen in the next week or two.. water was already in the upper 50's. When opener hits I'd guess we'll be right at the end of the spawn or already in post spawn in the metro.

Havent hit any local lakes yet as i am specifically going for the bass but they are going pretty good on the river.......smallies are pretty agressive.

I haven't had a chance to get out yet but am hoping to on Saturday.  Any word on where they're at?  I'm assuming they aren't up on beds yet but are they in shallow or still out a ways.  It's supposed to be in the mid 60's til Saturday when it hits they 70's here in the metro.  I'm new to the whole trying to determine where they are based on water temps rather than just "chuckin' and prayin'"

I think most are deep but all the bass I've caught have been really shallow mourning and evening

I NEVER fish deep on those lakes.  Docks will be a factor.

thanks jeff h but just got back from pre fishing and almost got skunked. 10 hrs of fishing and only 1lbs to show for. there was a canoe tournament going on and i guess that didn't help either. fished all breaks and weed lines with nothing to show for. should of tried the docks. lol. it was a tough bite with heavy winds and water temp was at 62. all in all, it was brutal. heard the canoe tournament winning bag was 17lbs 10 oz. Wow! i guess the lake does have fish, i just suck.

Yesterday would have been a tough bite anywhere.  I'm heading out now and expect the same or worse today.  I'm foregoing the usual 5am start and starting late as I don't think the bite will be worth snot this morning.  Going to Chisago as soon as I finish my coffee here.  If you have any other questions just PM me.

That makes sense. I was fishing with a crankbait and spinnerbait over weeds last year in my kayak and caught a few Northerns, Didn't really catch on to the pattern just thought it was random hookups. I wasn't prepared being that I had never caught one and reeled in a 5# pike on my kayak. It was fun but a pain to get the hook out being that we don't have a lot of fish species with teeth like that in Tennessee. I also actually just got some dropshot hooks and sinkers in from tackle warehouse so I will definitely try that. I'm not experienced with the technique so I'm excited to have the opportunity to work on it and catch fish. You guys might not need it or may have already found it but I have learned a lot watching BassResource videos as I feel like they break things down very well. Just thought I would share that with you all.

Can someone explain to me what a 5# pike is?

I am very familiar with pike i just don't know that means

And also, what hooks and weights work best for dropshoting?

You appear to be very young so I'm assuming this # is a "hashtag" to you.

To those of us that are a bit older, before smart phones, Facebook, and Twitter, this # was a pound sign.

So I'm thinking the poster is saying he caught a 5 pound pike.

Flake lake Auburn is where it's at, my friends grandpa caught the current mn state record there. Tons of 4-51/2 bass. Great Lake when you can find the fish.

Went out last night for the first time, west metro lake.  Water was 62°.  Only pulled in 2.  Both on a spinner bait in 8-13 feet.  Second was a female who just finished spilling her eggs.

I missed opener, bad weather anyway.... Yesterday was beautiful so I skipped work in the morning.  Water temps on the river 61.  4-5 smallies between 15-19 inches.  Kalins wacky worm, baby bass color seemed to work best.
