I haven't been out much since it started raining. I live a little further west than you (out by Lake Waconia) and just brought home a few new toys...a 14' Wenonah fisherman canoe and my first baitcasting setup.  I've heard rumors that any name in Minnesota that is named on a map legally has to have some sort of public access.  Not necessarly a dock or launch, but some sort of access point.  If this is true I'm hoping to find a few of those smaller lakes you're talking about that probably aren't hit by many anglers :)

So I'm really new to Minnesota fishing. I'm currently trying to find a good set up for bass on my lake. I've heard Coon Lake is hard to fish for bass, yet I'm seeing guys pull in 2-3 pounders during competitions. I went to Thorne in Blaine and got a few new hooks and whatnot. I'm not a competitor so I figure ways the harm in asking for some help. Anything you've gotta say I'm open ears, thanks y'all...yes I'm a southern girl :)

I would try a 6" senko texes rigged "weightless". It's an easy way to fish and we've had a lot of luck with it. You won't have a bobber or anything so you have to watch your line for the bite but it's a lot of fun!

What's the harm*

No harm.  My wife grew up on Coon, I've fished it a bunch, including club tournaments.  Busy, busy lake!  Fish the docks early in the morning and evening and relax during the day!  Them bass like a black jitterbug run down the sides of the docks in the evening.  Swap the hooks to #2 gamakatsu doubles and you won't snag all the floating weeds, they'll fold up against the body when you pull it over anything.  They get bigger than 3 lb's out there, caught many over 4 myself.

Thank you Jeff! I appreciate it very much! I've been hitting large and small mouth lately average 1.5 pounds off my dock. Hoping to hit a lunker soon :)

Have a question for you guys.  Looking to get a pike specific setup.  I know this is a bass forum but ive already got 3 of those so I need something for the pike!  Do you guys go MH or all the way up to H.  Im not going to be doing any muskie fishing or anything just your average pike.  As far as line goes.  Ive gotten about every single option by looking through other sites.  Im just not a huge fan of the braid fishing mepps and spoons bc it floats way to high for me even with a steel leader.  any suggestions??

How has everyone been doing lately?

I've been able to put respectable catches in the boat but have had to work too hard to do it.  Harsh winter, late spring, late weedgrowth and completely unstable weather has not made for an easy season.  I have not been out for 2 weeks and wasn't seeing much grouping yet, but I suspect that is changing by now.  It can only get better from here on.  I'm going up north for 9 days starting this weekend, weather is supposed to be stable most of next week.  Expecting a good bite.

I was finally able to get out last night on Lake Minnetonka with my brother in law and we had a good night.  The water was glass and he boated a nice 5.1 lb'r with a bonus crankbait in its lip!

Report from up North. I've been fishing in the Park Rapids area since opener. The weed growth is finally getting there and the bass are relating to it again. I've had some good mornings with top waters (sexy dawg in bluegill and numerous poppers). I don't trust my scale so I'll just say I've had some very nice sized catches so far. Lot's of dinks as well. I think the summer frog bite is just starting up here so I'm looking forward to that for sure!

Good luck to all you MN anglers!

Tight lines!!

As an out-of-stater I fished Pelican Lake and caught a limit of 4 lbers from shore in under an hour. Being from Montana I was blown away. Hopefully going to move there and join a club soon.

I was able to sneak in some fishing over Labor Day weekend. I took the kayak out to a lake I haven't been on in 10 years. The water was quite clear so the shallows were choked out with weeds. The DNR was actually out spraying Milfoil that same day. I found a deep weedline where the fish were stacked up and was able to pick them apart with a Drop Shot and a Deep Crankbait.

I moved back to Minnesota a year ago this past July and I live in Mankato.  This is the best large mouth bass fishing I've experienced by far...not even a close 2nd. That goes for numbers and size.  This past fishing season I was able to land from my kayak, with the help of my Jack Russel, Tator, sittn' right behind me, 409 large mouth bass and many, many, many were in the 4-6 pound range.  I could post pic after pic but the one you see in my profile pic is representative of the many big ones I've gotten.

Hey, long time lurker.. first post. I fish a lot in the northern suburbs. I had a good summer fishing some of the north metro lakes on my little vintage crestliner, I even found what i'd consider one of the best metro largemouth lakes around.. crushed on it this year.

Anyone else in the coon rapids/andover/ham lake area?

x3.

7.5 lber on DeMontreville? Not Guntersville right? http://www.bassresource.com/bass-fishing-forums/public/style_emoticons/#EMO_DIR#/wink.png Not calling you a liar...but throw that thing on an actual scale and you'll probably see that weight drop by a pound or two http://www.bassresource.com/bass-fishing-forums/public/style_emoticons/#EMO_DIR#/rolleyes.gif

Just to give you an idea...this is a legit 7 1/2 lber I found on the internet; don't see too many of these around these parts!

I would believe 7 on DeMonterville. I fished that lake later year. And considering it is catch and release only. I think there are only 8 spots to park if you don't live on the lake. I had to get there at 4:30 in the morning to get a spot, and I want the first on the lake!

I personal like clear lake by ruining aces, turtle lake in the cities. I love going up north and hitting the Brainerd area.

Clear I have pulled 5's and 6'ers out. Pull the lake had walleye, and tiger Muskie. So a great lake all around.

I live in Blaine myself. And fish mainly northern lakes.

I use a 6'6 MH. WITH 30 lb braid. I throw 1 oz spoons and inline spinners. So it goes against everything you don't like, but it works for me. I have found everything I use for bass work on pike, and often pike are next to the bass when I fish.

Lakes for pike only.. Otter in WBL. I have no problems pulling 30+in out. They say there are bass on the lake but I am sure it is only pike.

What lakes do you guys hit? I hit Lake George and Crooked Lake mainly. I'll pop over to Coon Lake once and a while. My dad lives in Forest lake so we hit Clear, Chisago, and Forest once and a while.

I hit Crooked Lake in Coon Rapids a LOT. Like a few times a week. It's a few minutes from my house and the LMB bite there is.. well.. there's a reason I go there every few days. (not on the ice, open water on my old crestliner)
