Vinny Chase Posted August 13, 2012 Posted August 13, 2012 Anyone locally want to buy my brand new Dobyns 805 CB RM deep cranking rod? Just bought it for TW for $250, but realized I didn't REALLY need another rod. Willing to part with it for $199. Thanks, VC Quote
Busy Posted September 4, 2012 Posted September 4, 2012 Anything on Lake Osakis? My dad and I are thinking about going there early next Spring. I think he is pretty set on that lake because he used to go there with his father as a kid. Does anyone know anything about this lake? When would be a good time to go? Is March too early? Sorry for all the questions lol but I am from KS. Quote

Sorry for all the questions lol but I am from KS. March is to early, more then likely the lakes will have some ice. Bass opener doesnt happen till 2 weeks after walleye/northern which will be the end part of May. Not exactly sure when the ice came off but in early April Iv was fishing in Iowa with no ice. Never fished Osakis btw Quote

Busy Posted September 12, 2012 Posted September 12, 2012 Thank you for the replies. It sounds like we may go during the middle of June. Does anyone have any information on Lake Osakis? Quote
bassmn Posted October 23, 2012 Posted October 23, 2012 I Believe their is a lot more 7 pounders then a person would believe I have seen many pictures of tournament competitors on facebook with 7 lbers. seen a7 lber in the spring once. Have a guy in my school with a mount of a 7 lber caught during the winter. Friend of my dad's was ice fishing a few years back and caught a bass in the 8 pound class but did not want to report it because they liked the privacy of their lake and didn't want it to start getting crowded. So i what im getting at is i think they is a lot out their but they are either really smart or my theory: they feed at night and eat large meals so they don't have to eat often an during the day when they are more apt to be caught by an angler. Welcome to BR! You make some good points, but personally I just think the harsh seasons and amount of preditors make it make it very hard for a bass to grow to that size...not saying it's impossible, but there is a reason why you RARELY see a 7 come up. When bass bite, it's not always to eat, so your notion that the bigger fish aren't being caught because they only eat at night in my opinion isn't all that accurate. Not saying they aren't harder to catch, but if there were more out there, anglers would find ways to catch them, and I have never seen an 8lbr. Quote
bass1980 Posted November 4, 2012 Posted November 4, 2012 Unless it was weighed pictures and words can be decieving. Many pictures look like a hog but when you weight it a lot of times you'd be shocked. Plus I'm not discrediting anyone but stories tend to change over time. Quote
NDFisherman Posted January 17, 2013 Posted January 17, 2013 I was wondering what lakes would be good to hit up (if any) around Otter Tail County or Douglas County areas. I have a few trips in the works for this coming summer and would like some tips, please. Also, how much later in the year do the northern lakes spawn in comparison to the southern lakes? Thanks! Quote
Jessico09 Posted February 8, 2013 Posted February 8, 2013 Big Island Lake in Itasca County, bar none. It's only 300 or so acres, but I have hauled in more 3+ pounders here than any other lake. If you are a strong frog fisherman (as I am), this lily pad covered lake is paradise, and the pads are not so thick you can't punch a texas rigged worm or creature through. This lake is magic. 1 Quote
BassinMyTailOff Posted July 1, 2013 Posted July 1, 2013 This was my 7lber outta brainerd lakes area, wish I had a better picture. 1 Quote
FrogFreak Posted July 2, 2013 Posted July 2, 2013 I fish around Park Rapids and I still love Long Lake. I've had 40 plus fish days there with a top water frog during the spawn. Yep, I put them all back. Love me some Lilly Pads! The bass in my profile picture was pushing 6 lbs. I caught her in a little place called Mud Lake from shore with a frog while scouting out new spots so I didn't have anything to weigh her with. No worries, I'm not to caught up on the whole size thing. Quote

Muzzy8124 Posted July 19, 2013 Posted July 19, 2013 do you guys know any good lakes where you can catch bass from shore Quote
bass1980 Posted August 11, 2013 Posted August 11, 2013 Yup there's no fish on my avatar pic so I can't BS about breaking any state records. I think we are still waiting for pics from you of the one or two state record you claim to know of. Quote
BassMN95 Posted October 23, 2013 Posted October 23, 2013 An older guy in my bass club caught a bass over 8, he has the mount and pictures to prove. I think there is a ton of factors why we don't have a lot of 7-8lbers but the main one in my opinion is the short growing season with the lakes being froze over for the better part of the year. Quote
Super User Jeff H Posted December 24, 2013 Super User Posted December 24, 2013 The night bite theory has as much going for it as anything else. I know of guys who chase musky at night and say they have caught a bunch of big bass including one of 7 lbs and several 5's from Forest Lake all on the same night. That shocked the heck out of me. Never would have guessed Forest Lake to hold a 7. Larry Reid caught and weighed an 8 lb'er from Tonka during a Wednesday nighter many years ago. His partner that night was Mark Raveling. I think it may have been around 93 or 94?? Quote
Super User Jeff H Posted January 2, 2014 Super User Posted January 2, 2014 WOW! That's a d**n nice fish!! Might have a tough time besting that up here so I hope you got a replica made of that brute! Quote
Super User Jeff H Posted January 3, 2014 Super User Posted January 3, 2014 I feel small in this thread with talk of 7-8 lb bass. I've been fishing bass 41 yrs of my life and my best LM is 6-2 and I'm still a few ounces shy of 5 with my best smallie. Definitely not ashamed of that but I'd like to push that number at least a little higher for my LM. Hopefully I can do that this year! Quote
CoonLakeMomma Posted June 15, 2014 Posted June 15, 2014 So I'm really new to Minnesota fishing. I'm currently trying to find a good set up for bass on my lake. I've heard Coon Lake is hard to fish for bass, yet I'm seeing guys pull in 2-3 pounders during competitions. I went to Thorne in Blaine and got a few new hooks and whatnot. I'm not a competitor so I figure ways the harm in asking for some help. Anything you've gotta say I'm open ears, thanks y'all...yes I'm a southern girl Quote
