Brayberry Posted April 24, 2013 Posted April 24, 2013 Let me know when you'll be at Lone Star and I'll get you on some fish. Some of the lakes there are better in different seasons or weather conditions, or even a particular bait/technique. Like I said I've been there more then anyone, averaging 3 days a week there for around 20 years+. My pb came from there at 9 even, but also have multiple fish in the 8's there 1 Quote
Super User Darren. Posted April 24, 2013 Super User Posted April 24, 2013 Fishing for the fourth time from a Kayak today in Harwood Mills (opposite side of boat ramp). Caught a couple smaller bass, lost 3 at the yak using senkos. Threw out what is becoming my reliable crank bait (Rapala DT 03) for trolling (2 pickerel, 2 yellow perch and a white perch). Wasn't long before the rod bent over and I had a nice fight on my hands. Didn't think a catfish would hit a crank bait. Hope it won't be too long before I catch Mr. Bass trolling. Catfish.jpg Nice cat for Harwood's Mill... Lots of big'uns there. Quote
Super User Darren. Posted April 24, 2013 Super User Posted April 24, 2013 Anytime any of you are interested in hitting up the lakes in kayaks down there, shoot me a PM. I'm game for any of them and plan on hitting Harwood Mills, Lone Star and others throughout the year. H'wood's and NNPK are my two main fisheries. If you come down this way, you might also want to hit Waller Mill Park in Williamsburg (if you haven't already). No toothy critters there, and they stocked it with Stripers back in the 70s or 80s. Never caught one myself, but the bass there are good quality. Another place is Beaver Dam Res in Gloucester...don't get up there often myself, but a solid fishery. Quote
Super User Darren. Posted April 24, 2013 Super User Posted April 24, 2013 Has anyone been fishing in the Hampton roads area lately? What's working, any patterns? I have actually been getting a lot of defensive hits in frogs and flukes lately I haven't done much frogging this year. Keep forgetting to bring the right box. But I agree with Stinky that they're hitting stick baits, Zoom Trick and Finesse worms... Haven't had a spinnerbait bite at all. And I rarely throw cranks. I've thrown flukes but haven't had any luck on them. Everything has been Senko/style and the Zoom baits mentioned. As well, all have been on weighted weedless wacky rigs. Quote

My success has been limited, used to have a yearly launch permit for the place, but haven't fished it in over a year. Quote
Hanover_Yakker Posted April 25, 2013 Posted April 25, 2013 Absolutely! I'm game, but I opt for the single use fee, since I visit so many different bodies of water in VA. I have a good kayak friend who lives there, and he clues me in on when the big stripers are on the prowl. Quote
Seanyboy Posted April 25, 2013 Posted April 25, 2013 Anyone fish the Suffolk Lakes (Prince, Western Branch, Cahoon, Lone Star, etc). Thats where I'm usually at, though occasionally I'll hit the Mariners Museum, Trashmore, or a few other area places. Lone Star is my home lakes, where I've been going for 20+ years. I know those lakes like the back of my hand. I'm usually out at either Cohoon or Lone Star most of the summer. I think I fish Lone Star more than most lake I fish. I mainly fish the south end lakes that are all attached ( from either shore of a kayak), but I've heard that Butler Tract on the north end has some big bass in it. Soft plastics are what I mainly use at Lone Star but I'll also throw a crankbait at some point during the day. What lake in the park do you fish the most? I went out and fished Newport News Reservoir this past weekend. Caught a few on a spinnerbait and a redeye shad being ripped through the weeds. Found some beds too, but no fish were on them. Quote
harmon Posted June 10, 2013 Posted June 10, 2013 I live in Carrollton, I'm stationed here, and just got here. I'm going to try some of these places out, Thanks guys. I'm from Georgia, I was home fishing in our pond 2 1/2 acres and I caught 42 bass in a couple of days. The average was around 1 1/2 lbs, but I did catch a nice 6-7 lb. Quote
OutKast Actual Posted January 3, 2014 Posted January 3, 2014 What lake did you fish at Lone Star? I personally love Lone Star, I know all the lakes well, as well. Fantastic fishing can be had at most of the lakes once you learn them. As for the Chowan River, It's more of a quantity fishery then a quality fishery. I like catching numbers of fish over a few big ones. What other lakes around the area have you tried? Sorry for the long hiatus...the USMC has had me away for quite a while now...but I'm back & ready to hit the water! We only fished the Lone Star Lakes those 2 times I mentioned before. My wife ended up spoiling me by pushing me to pull the trigger & buying a bass boat. It isn't a new high speed Ranger, Skeeter, Bass Cat, or anything...it is a 1989 Winner Tournament 2000 with a 200 HP Evinrude XP. It shines like its nearly new, the motor is a beast, & it will flat out fly! Anyways, enough gushing over my boat, I spent what time I had fishing down on the Chowan. I launch from Shoup's Landing & mainly went up river & fished in the Meherrin. The furthest south I went was down to/in the Wiccacon. We did pretty good each time we went out, however, I still got a lot to learn about that river system & need to figure out the most & the least productive areas. So far...I LOVE THAT RIVER!!! My son caught his personal best largemouth on a Zoom Horny Toad...it was a 4 1/2 pounder. We're excited to get back out there! Do any of you all know when the bass start pre-spawn on the Chowan & its' tributaries? Plus, can they be caught anywhere on the river during the pre-spawn, spawn, post-spawn or do you have to travel down toward the sound? Thanks in advance for any & all help! Quote
