Today is my wife's and my 9 year wedding anniversary. I made reservations over a week ago for dinner and a Polynesian (sp) show in Ft. Lauderdale. My wife took off work today and I found someone to cover my on-call status.

The wife and I got all dolled up and were very anxious to have a wonderful evening. I started the car a couple minutes before leaving and cranked the a/c so it would be nice and cool for us.

Here comes the IDIOT part. I took my son to the car to put him in his car seat so we could drop him off at the in-laws. Guess what? I locked the keys in the car.

I have no spare to my truck because im a double IDIOT. We would take the wife's car if mine wasn't in th driveway turned on.

So here we sit, waiting for a locksmith.

Now the wife can finally say, .

It gets easier with electronic locks. now all you need is a wedge (a big door stopper would work) to spread the upper door open and a hanger

Many years ago I locked myself out of my car in Gloucester County when visiting a client.

I swore then that I would ALWAYS carry a spare key with me. And I do. In my left pants pocket.

This has saved me on a number of occassions.

Find something like a wedge to pry open your door. I've used wooden wedges for door hanging and some plastic wedges i got from a neighbor. Then take a coat hanger or other long, thin stiff object (i used an old fishing pole) and press the power lock button. Unless you don't have power locks....

Also, keep a spare in your wallet.

I use to do this all the time in my old Mazda portage. The brains at Mazda thought it would be a good idea to put the lock button right next to the door handle. Even with my girlish hands I could only get my pinkie finger on the door handle. So my pointer finger knuckle would usually hit the lock button. And it was not a normal up down button that takes a little bit of resistance like most cars to prevent that. It was just like a button on a keyboard. It happened to munch that I could break in my car in under 5 minutes.

We finally made it to dinner and managed to have an enjoyable time. The wife was a real sweetheart and tried cooling me down by saying "It's ok, babe. You didn't do it on purpose." Even though we missed our reservations, we managed to go to a very nice, non-commercial steack house. A friend of mine is the owner and was able to seat us without any wait. We had bread, shrimp, lump crab meat and calamari for appetizers. Then we had salad, potato, Delmonico and NY Strip. We finished the dinner off with apple pie/ice cream and chocolate cake. I feel like a stuffed Thanksgiving Day turkey right now.

The first thing I'm doing tomorrow is getting 2 spare keys made.

Been there myself and had to use a locksmith on rental when on vacation. Extra keys are not what they used to be, some with chips and can only be mad at the dealer and are expensive. On my car the doors will not lock from the outside it the key is inside.

Been there, done that as far as keys and locksmith. All is well that ends well. That is the kind of meal that makes a man glad to be alive, and and a happy wife is something that is hard to put a price on. Good job and congrats on 9 years.

I locked my keys in my very first car the second day I had it. Took my dad 3-5 second to unlock it with his jimmy.Since that day I ALWAY carry a spare key in my wallet(Since I never leave anywhere without it.). I've only had to use my spare keys twice in 18 years.Boy I was glad I had it though!

I had a 98 ranger that you couldn't Jimmy the doors on. Couldn't go through the top of the door either. You had to go through the slide window on the back of it. It had a camper shell on it and was a nightmare to get into the truck.

Got locked in the back of my work van once. Child locks engaged and the wind blew the door shut. Had to unbolt the cage that separates the drivers area from the cargo area and climb thru to get out.

Being a locksmith, I've seen it all! You would be amazed at the things I have seen stuffed down into car doors! First, you absolutely need a spare (make sure you try the duplicate as soon as you can) and if you ever do have to call a locksmith, make sure you DO NOT call an 800 number to do so! In VA you need to be liscensed thru the state in conjunction with the Department of Criminal Justice Services. Fingerprints and background checks. So many scammers that will quote you a price and triple it when they arrive! Not sure what state you live in but open the phone book and see how many you find with 800 numbers! Scammers every one of them! Also, any locksmith that has any sense at all will never work on the driver side door, as well as any newer vehicle that has airbags in the doors, never let them put tools into the door cavity. They should as described earlier, wedge the door from the frame and open the door from inside the passenger compartment. Just a couple things to look for when calling a locksmith.

i once locked the keys inside my old dodge neon when i had it. i realized as i was closing the door my keys were still inside but it was too late to stop the momentum completely, though i did slow it down and it latched and locked but not completely closed. luckily at the time i always carried a spare key in my pocket for just such an occasion. i refuse to put a key in my wallet, its too uncomfortable and leaves an imprint in the wallet like a condom does.

has anyone ever tried the cellphone trick to see if it works? i read about it somewhere online. where if you lock your keys in the car, and like your spare is at home. call someone at home on their cell from your cell. and the theory is they can hit the button to unlock the doors and the signal will travel through the cell phones and unlock your car doors. i have no idea if it is true or works though....
