I-wanna-fish-now Posted April 8, 2012 Posted April 8, 2012 I've fished this creek near my house alot (7-8 times) in the past 5 days and can't catch any bass out of it I've seen people catch some good bass out of it since I started fishing there and I've tried using exactaly what they were down to color and retreive and I still haven't got one any ideas as to what I'm doing wrong or what the problem could be Quote
RyneB Posted April 8, 2012 Posted April 8, 2012 I have fished a creek for smallies and largemouth since i was 7 (im 29 now). I have found that i rarely catch fish on the same bait in consecutive outings, and that changing baits is key. I also looked at what was the main forage for the bass. Depends on where your at, but most likely you have sculpins, creek chubs, craws, tadpoles, insects, and smaller fish. I always start with a craw. I have success with the yum crawbug and baby rage craw. Anything that imitates a craw is a fantastic creek bait. If you dont mind using live bait, i suggest buying a small minnow net for 99 cents at your local bait shop. Walk the shore line and scoop up the sand, rock, silt etc. You will find all kinds of forage such as craws, hellgramites, worms. If wading is possible, cover as much water as possible. If you find a nice boulder in a deep hole (say 4 ft deep), fish that boulder everytime you fish that creek. The more you learn, the more you will be able to eliminate bad water for good water. My only consistent bait is jig and craw, grub, naked craw, and smaller tubes. One day i landed over 30 smallies on a Rogue, i have not caught a single smallie on a rogue since that day. Same thing with cranks, had an amazing day one day and havent had much action on a crankbait since. I also work an area that i believe holds fish for a LONG time. Ill spend an hour on one hole if i believe theres fish there. I figure even if i dont catch anything, i learn the bottom contour, and what structure is in the area. You just have to stick with it. 1 Quote

aclark609 Posted April 8, 2012 Posted April 8, 2012 I've fished creeks since I can remember and there is one important thing can make or break wether you catch fish or not. That thing is current. Don't worry about bait choice as much. Just grab a single tail grub, tube, or any other cliche small bait and find places where there could be a current break. If you are fishing a creek chances are you are fishing for small mouth bass. Although they can be found anywhere in the creek you want to focus on high percentage areas. Eddies are possibly the best place for a guaranteed bite. Look for an area of 'rapids' and where the rapids drop off into a deeper hole there will be some area where the water sort of swirls around into a still area. Drop any bait in green pumpkin into that area and you are almost guaranteed to catch a fish. Quote
Blue Streak Posted April 8, 2012 Posted April 8, 2012 Try the riffles either just above them or just below them that is where you will usually find active bass. Quote
