Super User tomustang Posted April 8, 2012 Super User Posted April 8, 2012 In one instance when you weren't fishing? Yesterday I was done fishing and driving back the path and decided to stop below the bridge to look into the water, saw some guy throwing in and well we started talking and he told me he was starting to get more serious into bass fishing this year. I spend over a half hour helping him out with the techniques he wanted to use and explain the types of old and new tackle he had in his new box, what locations to try and what to look for in the water to determine a better outcome. Seems like the time flied by, but I know it was the longest time I've ever talked to anyone about fishing without fishing. Quote
Super User Catt Posted April 8, 2012 Super User Posted April 8, 2012 Does the fishing isle at Wal-Mart count? 3 Quote
Super User Wayne P. Posted April 8, 2012 Super User Posted April 8, 2012 I do it a lot and sometimes a lot longer than 1/2 hour, and don't mind helping when I can. Quote
Super User grimlin Posted April 8, 2012 Super User Posted April 8, 2012 Usually as much time as they want to talk. Applies to me too....However unless I have to be somewhere else by a certain time. I'm careful as well about locations though...I've had 2 good spots completely ruined by opening my mouth. Quote
Super User tomustang Posted April 8, 2012 Author Super User Posted April 8, 2012 Does the fishing isle at Wal-Mart count? Of course! Quote
WookieeJedi Posted April 8, 2012 Posted April 8, 2012 During the summer, when the stripers start schooling, there's usually a lot of boats in one place. Sometimes it sounds like a beauty parlor out there. Quote
outdoorsman110 Posted April 10, 2012 Posted April 10, 2012 I've had guys with bass boats ask me about my how I fish on the water, I find it absolutely hilarious since I'm 16. I just know my river well. I think the most I've talked to a guy as about and hour and a half. Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted April 10, 2012 Global Moderator Posted April 10, 2012 I've talked to people for hours when I worked in the fishing department at Cabela's. I don't mind sharing what I know with people and I like helping people that are just getting into the sport or trying to learn something new but it's time consuming explaining some things. I also had people who knew a lot of tricks and spots that I didn't know about that would share with me after they learned I was willing to share with them, I've met some of my best fishing buddies that way. 1 Quote
Super User retiredbosn Posted April 10, 2012 Super User Posted April 10, 2012 spent an hour and half talking with a gentleman in Walmart a couple of weeks ago, he looked about 60 turned out he was 85 a WWII Vet South Pacific campaign and was still infected with the bassin bug. Gave him my number and told him anytime he wanted to go I would be more than glad to take him. It was a very fast hour and half. 1 Quote
Super User LgMouthGambler Posted April 10, 2012 Super User Posted April 10, 2012 seems like everytime I go to Bass Pro, someone will stop me and say "I hate to bother you, but you look like you know what you are doing", and then I help them with whatever they need. Then my wife asks me why I spent soo long in the store, and of course she thinks Im lying to her when I tell her. Quote
Daniel My Brother Posted April 10, 2012 Posted April 10, 2012 I got stopped by an IDNR cop at the ramp last year. He checked my jon boat and asked if they were biting. I shared some pictures from my camera, then he shared some pictures from his phone. A third guy came over and shared what worked for him. Nobody gave away any specific spots, but the information I gained helped me find more fish the next time out. I've learned a lot from this forum, but good local knowledge is priceless. Quote
Scorcher214 Posted April 10, 2012 Posted April 10, 2012 I usually just ask if they are catching any. That can turn into a good half hour talk about fishing though. Whenever Im at the store I always want to ask people if they need any help but I feel like they might perceive me as being a know-it-all jerk. Especially at Dicks. None of the workers there seem to know anything about fishing. I need to get a job there so can help people, and get discounts on tackle. Quote
"BRB" Posted April 11, 2012 Posted April 11, 2012 Depends am I going fishing or coming back from fishing. I'm more out to talk longer when I get back talk about what worked what didn't. On the way out its more or less good luck leave some for seed. Quote
Super User Sam Posted April 12, 2012 Super User Posted April 12, 2012 No, I usually don't speak with people when shopping for supplies or while on the water. I will speak with the guys at Green Top for a few minutes and say "hello" to anyone on the water that I come into contact. Quote
Deadeye-1 Posted April 12, 2012 Posted April 12, 2012 it depends on if I know them or not when on the water. Guys that I fish with when we meet on the water we will share what is going on and where that day. Others I usually take it as it goes, but never give away any spots. I do work in the Sporting Goods Dept of a Wal Mart, so I get to meet lots of folks. I try to help out those that have no clue of what to do, to help them get the types of things that are working. This gets them interested and into fishing when they catch fish. The ones that know what they are doing I've built up relationships with and we share tips and tricks that are working. Nothing is cooler than someone coming back to tell you that what you shared with them worked. I've spent probably an hour or more helping someone get set up so that they can go out and catch fish. Naturely if we're real busy I can't do that with every customer, but I try to help out each one and do the best for them I can. Quote
