I am looking to upgrade my line from "stock" line that came on the reel to something that is perfect for my rod/reel combo. I have a 6'6" Genesis rod and a spinning reel. Cheapo from walmart but thats what i am, cheap :) I will mostly be using it for large mouth bass so i figure 20lbs max? Or 20 could be too high.Mostly soft plastics and spinner baits. I am way WAY behind in fishing lines so i am unsure of what is best about braided and mono and whatever else. I THINK a braided line on spinning tackle would be okay? Right now at this moment,I am trying to master the soft plastic of the senko and yum dinger! Any help in line selection would be awesome!

You are gonna get a ton of answers, but my spinning reels have 6lb yo-zuri hybrid on them right now!

I was hoping for a ton of answers ;) Lol. I was not for sure if the fact it was a spinning head mattered or not?

First of all welcome to BassResource. We are glad to have you.

As for your question. First of all take a look at your rod. Just above where the reel goes you should see some information that will tell you the action of the rod, and the recommended line and lure weight that the rod can handle. Keep the pound test of your new line within those recommendations and you should be fine. Braided line is great for spinning reels but not so great in clear water. Mono line is a good started but has a lot of stretch. My suggestion is get a co-polymer line like Yozuri Hybrid or Izorline XXX. They are both good lines and have great properties. And most importantly they are fairly cheep.

Most monos in the 6 to 8 lbs range should do well. My walmart has Trilene XL, and Sufix Elite among others..

If you want to go the braided route, I'd get something in the 30-40 lb test range (which would equate to a 6-8 lb mono diameter).

I think i am going to take a serious look at the yo zuri. I dont get why anyone would get 3-50lb line for largemouth bass??

It isn't the fish that makes us anglers use 50lb braid, it is the cover. If you fish a frog in heavy matted grass and a bass comes to the top and bites your frog, you need a line that is going to cut through the matted grass and has very little to no stretch so the hook can be set. I can't tell you how many times I reeled in a 2lb bass with 20 lbs of weeds on the fish, so remember, the cover you fish also has a bearing on what kind and what size you to use.

Hm good to know! I have been toying with the idea of just getting what is at my local walmart. They have power pro and suffix 832,which i hear are both good lines. But for my set up I am unsure?

Please don't get mad at me, I'm only trying to help but the words are going to sound harsh. What you have is a typical all purpose walmart special, I'm betting that it is a medium powered spinning rod with proabaly a 2500 to 300 size spinning reel attached. While the rod may or may not have line and lure ratings I'm going to say that it is intended for 6lb to 12lb line and 1/8 to 1/2 oz lures give or take an 1/8oz or so. The sweet spot for that kind of setup would be 8lb line, preferably a good copoly, these "generic" rods usually don't have guides that deal well with extended use of braid so stay with mono. Cajun Red Cast is made for spinning reels, it is very cheap but it is actually a pretty good line, stay away from red lightning, that is made exclusively for baitcasting reels and is a good line but not on a spinning reel. Like I said, try that in 8lb, it will make a nice setup for Texas rigged worms, small jigs and topwaters.

Put Powerpro or the Suffix 832 on it in 20 or 30 lb test. If you run through the guides, you've been fishing enough to upgrade to better equipment.

I am in agreement with this. I still use 6 and 8lb mono on my reels all the time and don't have any problems with it. I prefer Stren, but there are plenty out there to choose from.

I ended up getting the Trilene XL Line in 10 lbs today because i am fishing tonight. Would this line be a good mono or should i order some Yo zuri and use the Trilene until the Zuri gets here??

Trilene XL is a good line, a lot of people get the impression that lines that don't cost 15 bucks or more for 200 yds. isn't very good line and it is far from the truth. I fish a few tournaments and do pretty well and fish a lot and have been fishing a long time, in that time I've tried a lot of line and have my favorites and you'd be surprised. My favorite all around line is Silver thread AN40, it handles well and is really abrasion resistant for mono. I also like Cajun Clear Lightning, this is really close to flouro in that is is really clear, has the lowest stretch I've ever encountered with mono, and the abrasion resistance is excellent, the downside is is made specifically for casting reels and it is more for jigs, worms and big moving baits, it is a little too stiff for finesse fishing. I only use power pro braid and I only use it for frog fishing or jig fishing in really heavy cover. Trilene XL is perfect for a spinning outfit as it handles nicer than XT, it doesn't have the toughness of XT but it holds its own so you got a good line.

I wouldn't think of using 20# mono on a spinning outfit. If the cover where I fished required that heavy a line and I didn't have a bait caster I would use braid. I think I have one spinning outfit with 8# and the balance are 6 or 4 #. The lakes I fish are almost void of weeds, little or n o wood the cover is rocks. I don't need to horse fish out of weeds, lillies, lay downs or what have you. If I am going to fish a lake with weedy or laydown cover I take a different reel or respool.
