jmed999 Posted April 7, 2012 Posted April 7, 2012 These little guys are only about half an inch long. Not sure what they are. Anyone know? Thanks Quote
Super User LgMouthGambler Posted April 7, 2012 Super User Posted April 7, 2012 Maybe juvenile bass? Quote
Super User tomustang Posted April 7, 2012 Super User Posted April 7, 2012 They look like minnows, like blacenose dace Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted April 7, 2012 Global Moderator Posted April 7, 2012 I'm going with bass fry/young of the year bass. Are they hanging out in groups around cover? Seems like schools of bass fry hang together in cover close to where they hatched for awhile even after their parents stop guarding them. Quote
Super User Bassn Blvd Posted April 7, 2012 Super User Posted April 7, 2012 Those are called "half inch long fish." And if you wait until next month they'll be called "one inch long fish." 1 Quote

flippin and pitchin Posted April 7, 2012 Posted April 7, 2012 If they were bass, at least one would have had a seven inch swimbait stuck in it's mouth. 2 Quote
Super User Hooligan Posted April 7, 2012 Super User Posted April 7, 2012 Look very much like Black Chin Shiners. The color pattern, tail fork, and location would point to that. Quote
wisconsin heat Posted April 7, 2012 Posted April 7, 2012 im sure they are some sort of minnow, they don't look like bass fry to me Quote

NCbassmaster4Life Posted April 14, 2012 Posted April 14, 2012 they are fry (baby bass) most won't live to see another day but a year from now they can grow up to 8 inches and two years from now they will be 2 yr old largemouths. Quote
Fish Chris Posted April 14, 2012 Posted April 14, 2012 Well, superficially (because of the black stripe) they resemble baby LMB fry.... But I'm leaning towards some sort of a minnow or shiner. As was as was asked, "Are they hanging in a swarm in one small area ? Is there an obvious bass bed nearby" ? I say, 90% chance of minnows or shiners (of which there are countless species) or 10% chance, LMB fry. An up close, clear, macro photo would make it easier to tell..... Peace, Fish Quote
jmed999 Posted April 17, 2012 Author Posted April 17, 2012 They were in one little area and not in a swarm. They were just hanging out in very shallow water trying to stay away from predators. Quote
TommyBass Posted April 17, 2012 Posted April 17, 2012 Look alot like Fathead minnows to me. They usually hang out in the sun really shallow along the bank... many times in groups of 3-5 or maybe a few more. They have the black stripe, but its hard to tell any other fin structure from your pictures. That'd be my guess though. Quote
