went and fished the Merrimack at the bow power plant for 4 hours yesterday.  we used everything from jigs to spinner bait to Alabama rigs to jerk baits and blade baits. also had 2 dozen different sized shiners.  we didn't see a single bass had one giant salmon take a shiner right at the boat which was cool. but besides that the water was only 47 degrees right at the bridge there and there wasn't any current to really note.  anyone know what the deal is with that spot? a few years ago it was my winter honey hole. it was still nice to get out in January on the boat, and not have my rod guides freezing on me and getting some casting practice.  anyways early spring this year I think.

I went out there at the end of November and had the same problem.  It's about an hour drive for me so it sucks having to roll the dice on whether or not they are pulling water that day.

I sent an E-mail to NH fisheries asking what the rules for lead are on interstate lakes.  The laws are not the same in NH and Maine,  they have not yet responded to the E-mail.

I'm hoping for an early fishing season.

Good point, I am going go out on a limb here and say what ever state license you show they will go by that states rules. It would be interesting if it does go by the actual border. I always have both NH and ME permits. I have never seen a maine warden on Great East always the NH patrol.

I drove around a few areas in Nashua yesterday.  A few smaller bodies of water like Sandy pond were over 1/2 open, the edges were starting to open up pretty much everywhere.  The boat launch behind Stellos on the Nashua river has a decent amount of ice still but the dam is wide open so it would be tough to put a kayak in right now anyways.  After a few days in the 50's this week I can imagine some of the smaller ponds should be at least close to fully iced out.

Any ice out reports in southern NH/northern MA?

I was wondering the same thing. With the warm weather we been having I was hoping for an early season. Last weekend I was down at the Dam on the Nashua river. The big pool area in before the dam is open, with the shoreline areas have some ice going into the river a bit.  It was windy as all, water was running faster than usual and a bit high. I was throwing some Chatterbaits and Spinnerbaits real slow against the ledges and got nothing. Tried a white Zoom grub, throwing it up against the wall there and a bit in the channel that leads down along the parking area, no luck either. Spent about and hour getting cold, but after not fishing for so long it was worth it. I also took a quick peak at Mill Pond on the drive over and some of the waters that feed it from the highway and they looked iced over still, with the pond itself being mostly iced over with some holes here and there.

I just bought a kayak Saturday, Ascend FS12T, from Bass Pro in Hooksett and I'm itching to get out there. First time off the bank for me so I'm keeping my fingers crossed for an early spring.

Last year I was checked by Maine on Great East Lake in the second basin.  I have still not received an answer, I have sent additional E-mails to fisheries and law.  It does not seem right to me that citizens could fish the same body of water and have different laws apply to them.

In the Maine Regulation book you can find Great East under " Boundary Waters Between Maine and New Hampshire"

http://www.eregulations.com/maine/fishing/boundary-waters-between-maine-and-new-hampshire/

Here is Maine's Lead sinkers law:

http://www.maine.gov/ifw/pdfs/Lead%20Sinker%20Law.pdf

A bare lead headed jig is completely legal for now.

Here is the NH state lead law as written:

http://gencourt.state.nh.us/rsa/html/xviii/211/211-13-b.htm

As it is written if the length of your jigs is greater than an inch including the hook it is legal until June 2016. After that it is illegal.

Has any one had any experience with the strikeking tin jigs?

Ive found some jigs that I may be getting, but does anyone know about chatter baits? I cannot find any that are lead free. I'm also looking for weighted swimbait and tube hooks. This law is really driving me crazy.

from what I understand chatterbaits will fall under spinnerbait category and you will still be able to use them.

I'm thinking about the Keitech tungsten casting jigs. They have them on tackle warehouse. They look fairly decent.  The head design looks like they will skip fairly easily.

Casting jigs usually come with a 3/0 hook rather then the bigger 4/0 or 5/0 hooks

If you read the fine print chatter baits will be legal because of the steel spoon attached.

That is the one downside that I found with the jigs. Im going to do more research on some other brands and see what I come up with. And thanks for the info on the chatter baits.  Thats the news I needed to here.

I took my new kayak out on the Nashua River yesterday. Saw a couple of other bass boats out there too. I fished for 4 hours or so and had no luck. I had a hard time finding the bass. My guess is the river is just real big, and its hard to get on them as early as it is. I started out at Mine falls launch and paddled up to the Bartemus Brook. Looking up the brook it was still lightly iced over. I'm no expert on bass or fishing in general but I think the fish are holding up in creek channels and when we see those fully ice out , and some of the shorelines, the fishing will get a little better. I was throwing- Chatterbaits, Spinnerbaits, Shaky Heads and small cranks(DT6). Heck, I even threw a Bluegill swimbait at em. All that said, it was amazing to just be out there and fishing. Cabin fever has finally broke.

- Also noticed that the pond, just before Target off of exit 8 in Amherst NH, is fully iced out.

ive never fished the Nashua river... going into any river at the moment scares me with how high and hard the water is running. is there any place to fish the Nashua from shore that's decent? I know Nashua nev is very knowledgeable about that river system

That whole area of the Mine Falls launch area, and the Dam, has some open shoreline fishing. That back of Stellos stadium is still a little bit of ice, but its clearing out. Heading upstream from the dam, the water is a bit higher than normal but the current was real slow or thats what it seemed like to me. The wind was more the issue is regards to being blown around. You could also try the Tilton St. launch. You might be able to cast out but your mileage many vary when comes to catching anything.

Anyone checked out Flints Pond in Hollis ?

Finally coming out of hibernation. I know this weekend is going to be chilly but has anyone checked the ice in the Milford area ? Wondering if there are any ponds iced out already, not looking to hit the Nashua river as I don't want to deal with the high flows. Hopefully spring comes in full force within the next few weeks !
