Phil_NH Posted March 15, 2016 Posted March 15, 2016 Squeezed in a half hour at Mill Pond before it got dark. Had one crush the jig on the fall. Threw it right up against the wall, towards the end. Black and purple jig with rattles. 43 °. 1 Quote

In the summer they stack against that wall and the point. The water flows through that area to a small waterfall. Always figured that they would park themselves there and let the food come to them. All that said, I was surprised he was there too. I had my jacket on and could see my breath, lol. I was thinking to myself  "they probably went back deep with the temp drop". Quote
mjggjm14 Posted March 18, 2016 Posted March 18, 2016 Is mill pond still full of milfoil or has it been cleaned out? Quote
Nashua Nev Posted March 18, 2016 Posted March 18, 2016 yes they have had the big orange tractor in mill pond and the river tanking out 10 dumpster loads of weeds and water chestnuts that were clogging up the river and pond the last 2 years , not sure if they will continue with it.  i hope they do  Fish Mill Pond early as it will fill up with every kind of weed and salad you can think of.  it will become very tough to fish BUT..... If you put in the time you will find some nice fish.  Those 2 out flows for the water are good places to start.  also where it flows into the canal , before you get there it has a bunch of structure in middle area before it turns left. Shane fished it a few years ago and called it a big salad bowl. once the beds start getting made , tool around and count them. according to my memory i counted at least 60 there last year including up into the canal. a lot of 2lbers. if the food is there and it seems to be they should be bigger. it is still quite cold in that and all water around here.  Ottenic pond in Hudson seems to be on the rebound in a good way. The tail end of last year produced some nice fish for me.  I expect it to continue especially with the mild winter and lack of ice fishing here in Southern NH.   If you are interested in big black crappie Lovewell pond on main dunstable across from yudicky field will keep you busy for hours. its a 3 minute walk down the path past the jersey barriers.  they eat well too.   If you want to spend some time head right down that canal , if you have a 2nd vehicle or you fish with a buddy follow the canal and fish it all the way to the end where if drops at the Pine st extension and pull out there.  you will be surprised what you come across for some good fishing in the canal.  also oxbow pond behind the mill yard is a good place to try. i know they are there , but i did not have great luck myself. it gets really filled up with pads. 1 Quote
Phil_NH Posted March 18, 2016 Posted March 18, 2016 Threw the yak into the Nashua river after the storm moved through. Got 5 of them on a white spook with the feather treble. Most were around 2 lbs. One tough pig came out of the rushes and smashed it. She dragged the kayak and spun it around for a bit lol. Most fun I've had fishing in a while. Got her on the scale and snapped a pic of her and some of the other ones. Quality is kinda crappy sorry, new phone. Quote

Phil_NH Posted March 21, 2016 Posted March 21, 2016 We've had some crap weather lately. This week looks like the temps might rise a bit, but who knows. I mean, I'll go out there in the cold and fish it anyways, but if we can get some sunny 50 + again then I think the bite will pick up for sure. Stupid cold fronts. Best of luck everyone. 2 Quote
NEjitterbugger Posted March 21, 2016 Posted March 21, 2016 Got out for a few hours on Wednesday and got one bite, went 3.58 pounds.. I was crawling a T-Rigged cut tail worm probably 10-20yards offshore in one of the deeper spots along the shoreline. After catching and releasing the fish I anchored on shore and saw about a dozen or more dead 3" silver baitfish that I could not identify. For one thing it had me wondering what they were, and secondly how and why there was a number of them dead. Some looked like had been banged up by something in the water but not all of them. It had me interested considering this was the one spot where I had gotten hit all day. I theorized that there was either a ball of bait that some bass had run through and killed a decent amount in the process or the people living on the lake tossed some dead bait in the water. I have no idea. They were skinny silver fish no more than 3". All in all ready to get back out on the water! 6 Quote
Super User Shane J Posted March 21, 2016 Super User Posted March 21, 2016 They were most likely pond shiners. I saw a few dead ones where I was, too. Not sure what kills them, but its common to see in this cold water. Either way, I'd make sure I had a little something that resembles them.  2 Quote
bobh64 Posted March 21, 2016 Posted March 21, 2016 Going to a friends house tomorrow to learn how to pour my own plastic baits going to try my hand on some chigger style craws first. Can't wait for first cast. 1 Quote

I save all my torn up plastics and after the season is over I separate them into colors and melt them down. Very fun stuff. Quote

Yes it was fun learning by practice made some nice chigger style baits in different colors and flake. Something to do on the rainy days for sure. Quote
Phil_NH Posted March 23, 2016 Posted March 23, 2016 Went out on the Nashua river from 6 to 7 ish tonight. Got  2 misses on the topwater, Livingston pro sizzle. Threw a jerkbait too, rapala shadow rap in perch color. Caught a nice Pickerel on it, the guy almost swallowed it whole. Couldn't believe it, but I got a crappie on it too. 2 Quote
mebisho Posted March 24, 2016 Posted March 24, 2016 After an arm injury forced me to sit out 2015, I am ready to go. I can lift the canoe, which was the rehab goal. But just in case, I got a kayak that weighs half of what the canoe weighs. Hope to see some of you around this season. 7 Quote

In general, if temps climb to the 50s next week and hold over a few days I would target shallow areas will quick access to deeper water. Bass will move up with heat. Try throwing a finesse jig for a subtle presentation and a lipless crankbait to search around for the fish quickly. Â Don't forget jerkbaits too. Good luck. 1 Quote

My preference is Jerk baits (I prefer shadow rap) shallow or deep on northern face coves open to the sun Slow is your presentation. don't be afraid to slowly hop a spider grub or run some light spinner baits around rock piles or sunken trees square bill baits bumped on rocky gravel structure will get some hits soon. as Phil said structure will play a factor so knowledge of the water will help.  This is for Phil_NH Match the hatch lol 3 Quote
luvfishing Posted March 24, 2016 Posted March 24, 2016 thnx guys its a lake with an avg depth of 10ft. That i fish alot of in the summer, just never this early in the season. Quote

Super User Shane J Posted March 25, 2016 Super User Posted March 25, 2016 That bait looks like a confused bathtub squeeky toy. I agree though, either fish jigs and jerks, or search 'em out with a swimbait. XXslow sinking, suspending, or slow-rolled big baits for me right now. Let's see some catches from the weekend, guys. Quote
Super User Shane J Posted March 26, 2016 Super User Posted March 26, 2016 Yup. It IS going on. Got 3 fish today in about 5 hours, but one was a 5-3, and the others were chunky 2.75ers. All of them hit a Pearl Slide Swimmer 145 worked wicked slow, just subsurface. Water finally hit 40 degrees, so still cold. If you're patient enough, you can catch 'em. This coming week is going to get 'em moving and eating more. 5 Quote
