jverrock Posted May 7, 2014 Posted May 7, 2014 Got out for half an hour after work got a small one but at least I didn't get skunked Quote
mhtranger Posted May 7, 2014 Posted May 7, 2014 Heading up to fish Alton bay this weekend for Smallies and Largies....Anyone know what the water temp is, Any ideas Last I saw was 46 degrees. That was from the Lakeport dam. Quote
pipes18079 Posted May 7, 2014 Posted May 7, 2014 Been busy out there in southern nh last two days for numbers majority coming of a all gold war eagle spinnerbait. Was able to get in some shallow water this afternoon and found a half dozen beds with smallies on em I couldn't believe it at first tossed a football jig to those. Just this past weekend I did a small team event on ossippee and our fish were caught out of deeper drop offs on silver buddies and suspending jerkbaits what a difference between pawtuckaway and ossippee in just a couple days Quote
MikeOGNR Posted May 8, 2014 Posted May 8, 2014 Went out yesturday and I finally caught some fish haha. Caught a 15 in Pickerel and a 12 in Pickerel not what I wanted, but hey I'm not complaining atleast it's something will post pics when my phone stops messing up. Quote
nmv Posted May 8, 2014 Posted May 8, 2014 I'm thinking about bringing the canoe out for the first time this year on Saturday morning to turtle pond, turkey pond, or Stumpfield. Â After reading the last few pages I have an idea of what bait is working, but how deep should I be looking for bass right now? Â Anyone have luck with any of these locations this spring yet? Â Thanks everyone. Quote
Nashua Nev Posted May 8, 2014 Posted May 8, 2014 just one river fish today --- p.s. the blood is mine. not fishing related , a cut on my finger opened up while i was fishing. not a fishing related injury  1 Quote
clr9933 Posted May 8, 2014 Posted May 8, 2014  Got out this morning for a bit. This largemouth I got is about a quarter of the size of the ones I saw cruising the shallows. It drove me crazy to see them and not be able to get them to bite. A lot of the time I would throw my jig into a tree and when I'd reel it in those big ones would come out with it, but just couldn't get them to commit. Anyways, it was motivating to see so many bass and perch so shallow, I'll get one of those mules at some point. Happy fishin', y'all! bobh64 Posted May 8, 2014 Posted May 8, 2014 Did GreatEast today 19 between 9am-1pm then the wind hit and stopped the hits enough for white caps coming back on the big part of the lake. They were definitely cruising tight to the shore. the second basin has temps hitting 58 so I expect spawning to begin soon. Pumpkin seed senkos also same color ragetail on a swim jig were the winners today. 3 Quote
MikeOGNR Posted May 8, 2014 Posted May 8, 2014 Here are the first two fish of my season. Nothing to come home about, but hey good enough for me haha. 1 Quote

Have you tried fishing Otter Lake in Greenfield yet? It's not very big, but it has a ton of bass. It's also perfect for the canoe. It's part of the state park, but you can launch from the public launch .  You can park there too without having to pay. It might be a drive for you, but it's as close to a sure thing that I know of. I have yet to try it I just started fishing around my area last year cause I got my canoe. Does it have some good sized ones? I have been looking for some spots around me that are really good fisherys. Potanipo is pretty bad way over fished. Rocky Pond in Hollis is ok, but there isn't really much size to the fish in there. Baboosic Lake is pretty good I have seen people catch 8lb fish in there, but it is kinda a paddle when you try to fish places in there. Quote
Nashua Nev Posted May 9, 2014 Posted May 9, 2014 Mike , if you will allow me i will throw my 2 cents in here. or as my dad would say His (lesson) or (info) or (bs) or (insert what is applicable ) #50814  (todays date)  at 73 he still says this all the time.  Couple things to think about , ponder etc.  One thing you want to ask yourself anytime you go fish is what kind of fisherman am i today. For many people this is going to vary just as it does for me.  For others maybe not so much.  when i fish with my grandson (he is 9) this is all about fun for him, not about fishing for me.  earth worms , sometimes bobbers , and lots of fish any type any size.  when i fish with my 15 yr old, we still want to catch fish but keep it fun , pickerel , pike ,bass , white perch , black crappie dont need to catch as many fish but a few are needed and for us there is nothing wrong with big teeth.  then there is fishing with the buddies , a cigar , and some bass , you want to catch fish , just not the smallest bass. cause that one buys the beer after type of thing  then there are the alone and or a little more serious times with a buddy that fishes a little more serious than others -- nothing smaller than 3 lbs is what you are looking for a few 3 lbers is ok between you. and a 4 or 5 + is nice.  then you get serious from there. Quality above quantity , slower , less fish or no fish ... hunting for 4+ and nothing but.-- it gets boring at times but you can usually end up with a fish or 2 many times not quite big enough but enough to keep you hunting for them.  then you have the ones that are looking for nothing but ---- THE FISH --- Around here SOUTHERN NH or NH IN GENERAL the elusive 7+ --- many , most times this equals zero fish.  also ask yourself what you consider good size? and good size for where you are fishing.  there really is a lot of small water canoe fishing in Southern NH  If you are hunting for THE FISH and nothing but then that can narrow your search.  Most ponds have a big girl or 2 --- Nutts pond or Stevens pond in Manchester. Stump pond Amherst. You just have to put into perspective what you want . I love fishing the Nashua river, but ---- lots and lots and lots of water and hiding places for them. and a lot of time patience learning this place.  Find a place you like and learn it.  Maybe set goal to find the hiding spots in Melondy pond in Brookline. They are there, its not too big, easy to get to , and right now not completely grown in with weeds.  Pick a section of it and fish it , get comfortable with what you are throwing and learn a few more things.  and read here , lots of info , hints and helps.  Rocky pond in Hollis also holds some nice 4lb + fish.  super clean , and super quiet.   above all have fun. 3 Quote

I guess might type of style fishing would be I like catching fish above 3-4 lbs as nice fish and a 5lber to me would be a really big fish. Anything above that would be a trophy. I like fishing baits like Texas rigs a lot which I know can catch big fish, but it also gives me a broader spectrum allowing me to catch smaller fish as well. I like fishing for other species to. Some people hate pickerel I personally think there not a bad fish and I like catching the big ones of them anything above 20in is a good size one. My problem I have when I fish is finding places on new pieces of water that hold fish, but I'm sure you all know the struggle haha. Right now I have been sticking to a local spot around me going there just about every day and fishing the whole place, which I have learned the spot a good amount and I know there are some big fish in there. Thank you for the advice Nev and anytime you wanna fish the river I'd love to come fish it with you maybe learn a few spots there. Quote
Mainebass1984 Posted May 9, 2014 Posted May 9, 2014 Â It is all about perspective. I personally usually target bigger fish. There are days though when all I want to do is catch a LOT of bass. Ideally I would like to catch a lot of big fish. That usually doesn't happen. Each body of water is different and some bodies of water simply don't grow big fish. As far as learning a new body of water.. It is not easy. Like Nev said you got to pick an area and learn. That is difficult on big water though. One thing about bass fishing is that you shouldn't second guess yourself. Have confidence in what lure using and where you are fishing. Â Who is going fishing this weekend ? 1 Quote

Yea that's why I like fishing ponds and small bodies of water. Because I know there are good fish in them and it's a small area to cover. I wish I could catch the fish that you catch on the daily lol. Quote
Nashua Nev Posted May 9, 2014 Posted May 9, 2014 1 fish today. sometime we just get lucky finding a fun one  still looking for the elusive 7+ in the river, i am going there again sat morning about 5 am till 8:30am and possibly sunday also  4 Quote

bobh64 Posted May 9, 2014 Posted May 9, 2014 If I can add what the current thread theme has been. I will break down a un known lake by zones, I will study a lake on google earth (tip the lower left is a time bar put the map back a couple years and some lakes actually show better pictures of what is under water ie rock piles, submerged points because they take the pics in the fall and most lakes are lowered.) I look for the obvious points, protected coves and inlets/rivers then is towards low water (floating grass, cat tails stumps) middle water 3-10 feet looking for stumps, submerged rocks or gravels piles. then its studying time with depth maps for ridge lines and channels that will hold staging bass for the change in weather patterns I will put about 10% into studying out of water 10% cruising the water and the rest just luck of the draw using past experiences to help me through. I was lucky enough to be part of a seminar put on by Hank Parker a long time ago and he put it this way " A big bass is like a big lion they don't go hunting they wait in the shadows and grab what comes to them they don't want to use any more energy then what is needed for the size of the bait. Hope this helps, I'm not a pro I'm just a guy who likes to fish for enjoyment now. 2 Quote

InfamousBG Posted May 10, 2014 Posted May 10, 2014 Hi guys, new to the boards. Name is Brian. 32 year old male. Been fishing my whole life. Just moved back to MA from California. I currently live in Pepperell MA. I love to fish (as most of us do). I grew up fishing the lakes region. My parents use to own a house on Newfound lake. I know that lake like the back of my hand. Same with Winni, Squam, Winnisquam and a few others. I have fished all over New England and then some. Love smallmouth bass but I am up for catching many other types of fish. Â Just wanted to say hello. If anyone is ever looking to fish around my area let me know. 1 Quote
