Super User Shane J Posted December 25, 2013 Super User Posted December 25, 2013 And a boat! Yeah, and gear. 1 Quote
NEjitterbugger Posted December 26, 2013 Posted December 26, 2013 My favorite things that Santa ended up bringing me were the 7'6" Clarus Crankbait rod, Orra Winch (to go on the Clarus), and a T3 Ballistic... It really sucks that I have to look at my new stuff for a couple more months! At least I get a little break in February when I go to Florida, hopefully I can get more bass fishing accomplished this year... 1 Quote
jsc4324 Posted December 26, 2013 Posted December 26, 2013 What do you think of the orra winch? I got one of these also and was surprised how smooth it was out of the box. I also got a stx and tatula and the winch seems smoother than both of those at least on first impression out if the box. Now just have to wait 3 more months before they can be put to use. 1 Quote
DevilDoc Posted December 26, 2013 Posted December 26, 2013 I ended up breaking out the Rapala Bass fishing for my Xbox 360, I've been so desparate 1 Quote
Nashua Nev Posted December 26, 2013 Posted December 26, 2013 The Merrimack river is wide open if anyone want to borrow my canoe. I have work and hockey all weekend. Quote
bobh64 Posted December 26, 2013 Posted December 26, 2013 Currently holding several gift cards for cabella's and bass pro shops finally my family listened to me. 1 Quote
NEjitterbugger Posted December 28, 2013 Posted December 28, 2013 Got a Spro BBZ-1 8" slow sink swimbait, It's my first big swimbait I plan on trying for bass. I don't really have a bass rod to throw a 4.8oz lure with, should I throw it on one of my lighter striper rods even though its spinning? I don't think any 7' or 7'6 MH bass rod will hold up very well with a 5oz lure, what do you guys think, should I experiment with the bait on a striper setup or on one of my bass rods, before investing $300ish dollars in a swimbait setup... Quote
Beverly Bassman Posted December 28, 2013 Posted December 28, 2013 I have thrown many musky lures that are bigger than 4.8oz on a 7ft MH bass rod. I caught a 19 pound musky last august on a setup like that. You have to be careful. A heavy action rod is better. But you can fish that lure with the rods you described. Don't over stress the rod on the back cast. You can still get a feel for the lure. Quote
bobh64 Posted December 28, 2013 Posted December 28, 2013 A friend of mine has those his only problem with them is that the fins and tail take a beating but they are replaceable. I have always seen him use just a regular heavy bass set up when he used it. Quote
Super User Shane J Posted December 29, 2013 Super User Posted December 29, 2013 I say use the right gear for the job, and get a Heavy action casting rod for swimbaits that size. That's just me, though. I've always been a right tool for the job kinda guy. I'm sure you could at least try it out with that surf casting gear. 1 Quote
NEjitterbugger Posted December 30, 2013 Posted December 30, 2013 Here's my new thought, I get a swimbait specific bass rod maybe an iRod Genesis II, and get a reel that can be used in fresh and salt water. This way I can use the setup for stripers and bass... Just because I don't see myself throwing a swimbait all day everyday. 1 Quote
bobh64 Posted December 30, 2013 Posted December 30, 2013 Baitcasting is new to me so looking to up the rod count soon. I love spinning rods and can match anyone fishing with one, currently have 11 spinning set ups in my boat. I have 4 bait casting rods a 6.6, two 7ft and a 7.6 foot rod whats everyone's favorite rod size without going into rod names? Quote
Super User Shane J Posted December 31, 2013 Super User Posted December 31, 2013 That makes sense, Jitterbug. Good plan. 1 Quote
Spyder Bass Posted December 31, 2013 Posted December 31, 2013 I like a 7' rod the most. Although I do prefer other lengths for certain techniques Quote
NEjitterbugger Posted December 31, 2013 Posted December 31, 2013 If I had to choose one setup to fish with it would be a 7' MH Fast with a 6.3:1 or 7.1:1 reel... 1 Quote
Spyder Bass Posted December 31, 2013 Posted December 31, 2013 That's my number one setup with the 7.1 reel Quote
Mike2841 Posted December 31, 2013 Posted December 31, 2013 Most of my rods are 7ft, but I prefer 6'6". I find anything over 7 to be cumbersome, maybe it's because I'm not that tall. Quote
NEjitterbugger Posted December 31, 2013 Posted December 31, 2013 I got a 7'6" MH Med Fast Shimano clarus crankbait rod... I don't think it will be that bad, It is heavier than my other rods but thats just because of the rod itself... Quote
bobh64 Posted January 1, 2014 Posted January 1, 2014 My 6.6 spinning rod set up is perfect for skipping tubes or wacky rigged worms under brushes and docks. Even caught one under a dock someone was fishing off of this year with his permission of course. Sorry about the double post earlier this site has been running wacky for me the last week. Quote
nhbassin Posted January 2, 2014 Posted January 2, 2014 If I only had 1 baitcasting setup to use, I would go with a 7 foot Medium-Heavy rod with a 6.3:1 left-handed reel. Quote
JoyoftheCatch Posted January 2, 2014 Posted January 2, 2014 Hey guys, Im newly registered but I have been reading this thread for a long time now and I want to thank you all for posting helpful tips. I am really wanting to start my bass fishing "career". I want to get into tournaments but I do not own a boat. Do any of you know if New Hampshire has tournaments with co-anglers? I was apart of my high schools bass fishing team and ever since then I cannot get enough of fishing. Any response will be greatly appreciated. -JoyoftheCatch Quote
HeavyDluxe Posted January 2, 2014 Posted January 2, 2014 I know there must be *some* co-angler tourneys in NH since a somewhat local tackle place (Pinnacle B&T in Newport, NH) sponsored one on Lake Sunapee last year. I'm sure there are some local clubs that do likewise. I live across the line in VT, though, so I'm sure someone more local to you will chime in shortly with a better answer. 1 Quote

If you contact the club presidents, I am sure some of them have spots for co-anglers. Good luck. 1 Quote
bobh64 Posted January 2, 2014 Posted January 2, 2014 Most bass clubs I know have both boaters and nonboaters for memberships They always make sure you get paired up for a club tournament and sometimes being paired up with different people gets you to try different styles of fishing. When I started I was ia member of NorthEast Bassmasters out of Eliot ME I was a non-boater and still was able to qualify as a team member for the Maine state team to fish against 14 other states at the regional event for the bassmasters. Just be prepared to help out with some gas money as a courtesy. During the last couple years as a boater I always have tried to bring friends to a local lunker tourney to let them get the feel of what it is like to fish wish a bunch of guys who love the sport and to listen to the tall tails after. 1 Quote
bobh64 Posted January 7, 2014 Posted January 7, 2014 My lake wish list to try fishing this year is Northwood lake, Pleasant lake and Merrymeeting lake. Is Pleasant lake accessible for boats over 18ft? Quote
