Hi folks. I just rediscovered fishing about a month ago. I'm been hitting the creek regularly with my daughter's little Shakespeare Microlight, catching panfish. I just purchased a new setup for myself - a Daiwa Spinmatic C 6'6" UL with a Shimano Sienna 1000. Now I need to put some line on it.

I'll be stream fishing for panfish and smallmouth and I'll also be trying my hand at some ultralight bass fishing at the local ponds and lakes. I'm basically going to be using 1 rod/reel and 1 spool. So, what should I spool onto my real for maximum versatility and functionality? Line technology has progressed a lot since I was last into fishing, over 20 years ago. Mono, flouro, braid, nano, braid w/flouro leader, nano w/flour leader... I'll be honest, it's a bit overwhelming :dazed-7:

I like the idea of a the high strenght/diameter ratio of a nano or braid for when I'm fishing for bass. But everything I read suggests I need a leader of some sort to avoid spooking the fish. If that's a good idea, how long a leader should I use? How short do I let it get before I tie-on a new one? Super noob quesitons, I realize.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

8lb anything, if you're gonna use an ultralite, use a good brand of line at 8lb test.

I use 6lb Stern Fluorocast. So far so good. No problems. Sorry Outdoorsman, but anything over 6lb is not UL anymore, its just L, lol.

P-Line Fluoroclear 4lb is what I used. I used to use Yo-Zuri Hybrid on all my outfits, but found the P-Line to be more supple with less memory.

I keep my ML dropshot rig spooled with 6#. To me, UL is 4# line or lighter.

Unless you're out to set some IGFA line class records....

Keep this simple - 4# Trilene XL will work fine.

Thanks JF, that's what my dad suggested, as well.

Appreciate all the input folks, thanks.

Power Pro Microline braid 4# (.002") or TUF-Line XP braid 6# (.002") with an actual break strength of 14 LBS.

thats cheating, lol

I agree 8lb is no longer ultra light. For ultra light I like Yozuri ultra soft #4 in green. The clear shows up in some clear water conditions. The green is much less visable in all water conditions.

I like Trilene XL 4# and have used it for alot of ultralight fishing and have never had a problem with it. You do have to change mono on UL reels with great regularity as line twist and age take their toll fast on light line. Now that said, I use Powerpro on it now b/c it does better with line twist, and you can really fling light grubs and feel bites with it. THe lack of stretch isn't usially a problem because most UL rods are very moderate in action.

Lol, I was thinking same thing.

I have my UL setups spooled with 4lb Trilene XL, but not because I think it's the best line for the job. I use it because it's cheap and readily available. I can't tell you how many of the little (100yd?) spools I've found in the clearance bins around here for $1.
