I prefer oil, I use the TG Rocketfuel line of products and prefer the red for this application.

Every time I get oil in an IAR bearing it starts slipping. Grease for me. Oil on spool bearings, grease in the IAR if it needs any.

The AR should be lubed with a light coat of oil applied with a swab. Be sure not to leave fuzz behind.

Oil only for the IAR bearing. The best tool for this job is one I stole from my wife. It looks like a q-tip, but the cotton has been replaced by a round foam pad. No fuzzies left behind.

She doesn't know I stole it.

I wonder why most brands ship with greased one way bearings? About the only one way that comes oiled are the large pin Shimano bearings, and they say "no grease" on them. I don't care for oil - it always seems to get into the drag washers. I've been getting excellent results using a *VERY* thin coating of Shimano Star Drag Grease. I think though for 90% of users that just do a touch up cleaning, use nothing and leave it alone is the best advice. Seen quite a few messed up spinning reels from guys that tried to do them themselves.

Probably the same reason they ship reels with the spool bearings greased. I believe it be for corrosion preventative.

That doesn't make sense - if that was the case spinning reels would be sent that way too. Even when you send them to have their service centers do it, they use grease there too. As far as the bearings go, it's only really Shimano that greases them, the others are oiled. Last I heard, oil prevents corrosion just as well.

I am a little confused, are we talking spinning or BC.

Either. If it was as simple as preventing corrosion, then it would be consistent. It isn't, so that isn't the reason.

The BC reels from many different MFG's for service have never come from the factory oiled. Oil is a good corrosion preventative as you mentioned, but after it sits for a while it has a tendency to pool, leaving parts unprotected, this is in my opinon why grease is used from the factory.

Seems like you have a case of the Devil's Advocate today, gonna have to find someone else to play with, I'm done.

Go ahead, take your ball then. :eyebrows:

Yes, oil does pool, that's my point! It pools up on drag washers in baitcasters. I haven't had any issue using a fine coating of Star Drag Grease - that's all I'm saying. Gives you a smoother feel as well, and no back chatter. But, the part has to be 100% free of old lube.
