Super User LgMouthGambler Posted April 4, 2012 Super User Posted April 4, 2012 Yesterday afternoon I walked out to fish my canal to get on that evening bite. Upon my quest, I noticed a big female Snakehead hanging out under a sprinkler water pipe. As I carefully cast past it and try with my lizard to get it to bite, it just would not pay no mind. I snuck over by the edge where it was hanging out to make sure it was still there. Its big red eyes and large mouth were still apparent in the water. So I quietly moved past it on the other side to bring the lure accross it in the other direction. Still nothing. I then grabbed a soft plastic BPS frog, and put it on the hook. The fish was very interested in its loud flapping legs hitting the water. On the 2nd cast I walked it over her and she ate that thing like it was its last meal. I gave it 2 seconds, the set the hook with all my might and off she went. She pulled line and swam in every direction she could in the narrow part of the canal. The edge of the canal is lined with rock ledge that cavitates under the grass shore about a foot deep. As she tried to hide and swim under there, I could hear the line being scraped along the rock, the sound was like a nylon string on a guitar. As I pulled her out while tightening the drag, she dove down pulling more line until she rocketed up to take a leap of faith out of the water. She jumped about a foot out, shaking and thrashing, trying to get free. I got her close to the edge and ready to bring her out, when she went into a death roll, and tangled herself in my line. As I went to pull her out again, she rolled again, then took off for another run, and yet another leap of faith. She was now tired out, and tried one more time to duck underneath the rock, and testing the strength of my line. As I pulled her out, and scooped her half of the body that would fit in my net, she was landed. The line was pretty beat up from the lure till about 2 feet after, but it held up against this monster. I used to tell people you needed braid to fight these beasts, but the YoZuri holds up, in my opinion better. From the complete rod bend, to the digging and scraping of the rocks, this stuff holds up. I use the 20# for my heavier rigged plastics, and 12# for my lighter rigged plastics. 2 Quote

craww Posted April 4, 2012 Posted April 4, 2012 Great story man. What size were you using at the time? Quote
Super User LgMouthGambler Posted April 4, 2012 Author Super User Posted April 4, 2012 Great story man. What size were you using at the time? 20#. My Revo SX has 20, my Shimano 50E has 12 Quote
craww Posted April 4, 2012 Posted April 4, 2012 Thats awesome. Those are the two sizes I use also. Never really tested the 20 but the 12 has withstood some crazy stuff. Congrats on your catch, I'm sure you'll never forget it. Quote
outdoorsman110 Posted April 4, 2012 Posted April 4, 2012 That'd be a good bed time story for the kids. Haha. Nice catch. Quote
POPRG Posted April 5, 2012 Posted April 5, 2012 Krikey! She got me in da death roll! A true man vs beast story,i like it gambler! Them snakeheads becoming overpopulated in FLA?? Quote
Super User LgMouthGambler Posted April 5, 2012 Author Super User Posted April 5, 2012 Yeah, they are spreading fast, and have been for years now. My canal has had an inredible comeback with bass fishing now that I have hunted these Snakeheads and killed them out. I fish my canal at least twice a week, and every once in a while I will spot one, then the hunt is on. I havent pulled one this big out in a while. They are an amazing animal though. Quote
loodkop Posted April 5, 2012 Posted April 5, 2012 Great post. It makes me anxious to try out my 1st spool of YZ. Quote
LAURASDAD Posted April 5, 2012 Posted April 5, 2012 In slightly stained water, do you guys think the mist green or clear is better? I have used the green in clear water but not sure if it matters in slightly stained water. Quote
backcast88 Posted April 6, 2012 Posted April 6, 2012 I just bought 12lb clear Hybrid and like it a lot. I have not caught any fish with it yet b/c I just put it on tonight but I did get 30 minutes of flipping/pitching practice in and really like it. It seems pretty stiff and the guy I know at my local Bass Pro uses it and says its about unbreakable and really sensitive so I can't wait to get out on the water with it. Quote

Diggy Posted April 6, 2012 Posted April 6, 2012 Did you say cavitates, lol......the read was good. Glad to hear it held up well. I hear the breaking strength is high. I have the same setup as you as you know but with 12lb. I also like it alot.I got tired of having braids on almost every reel. I got the camo green color. Seems good, It pulled in a 5lb bass in the weeds with ease and I will test the snakes with it too. Quote
Super User LgMouthGambler Posted April 7, 2012 Author Super User Posted April 7, 2012 Its a lot cheaper than the braided lines, and holds up soo well. I now only have braid on 3 of my rigs, my E200 Curado for my topwater frog, my G200 Citica for lighter plastics in heavy cover, and my ProQualifier for heavier plastics. These I only use for fishing real heavy cover, but I cant wait to give the YoZuri a shot in the Glades, and see how well it holds up there. Quote
dave Posted April 7, 2012 Posted April 7, 2012 All of my Potomac River Snakeheads were caught on 12# Yozuri in hydrilla. I'm with you all the way. Quote

kLuo Posted April 8, 2012 Posted April 8, 2012 Awesome story and fish! Side question though: how do you like that net? That is the Frabill Kwik Stow Folding net, right? I've been eyeing it but I don't know if it can hold bass well. Quote
Super User tomustang Posted April 8, 2012 Super User Posted April 8, 2012 I've yet to bite the bullit and buy some, next time I'm out I'll get a few spools Quote

That is the Frabill Kwik Stow Folding net, right? I've been eyeing it but I don't know if it can hold bass well. Its a great net for when im walking the banks and fishing because it folds and fits in my Spiderwire backpack tackle bag. When im out on a boat I have one of those floating nets that is stronger. It is a good net for travel, its pretty strong, it pulled that 7# snakehead out of the water no problem. Quote

That sounds promising, thanks for the info. What about the net material? It seems like it would be a nightmare to try and untangle a treble hook from it... Quote
Super User LgMouthGambler Posted April 9, 2012 Author Super User Posted April 9, 2012 Isnt everything a pain to get treble hooks out of? Haha Quote
